Debaters and CoachesCONGRATULATIONS on being some of the best and brightest young minds in Kansas! Qualifying for this year’s Kansas State High School Activities Association Debate Championship is a tremendous honor and extra special during these challenging times. Part of our KSHSAA mission states that in-terscholastic activity programs promote positive school and community relations. Be proud as you and your squad take the next step to becoming a State Champion! Being respectful of the judges and student competitors speaks volumes about your character and ultimate success. Not everyone can leave today as a champion, but in the eyes of the KSHSAA you are all outstanding individuals. You are here to compete at the highest level, and after the many positive experiences gained from this event, everyone will walk away a WINNER! Debate is such an important activity when shaping the “WHOLE” student. You have set a course for being successful in your life as a direct result of your DEBATE par-ticipation. Kansas Debate Community,

I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to Olathe Northwest High School! We are honored and privileged to serve as the virtual host for the 2021 Kansas State High School Activities Association 6A and 5A State Debate Championship. While we wish everyone had the chance to visit our building and com-munity in-person with a more traditional approach to a state championship, we are pleased that this event could adapt and adjust to continue to showcase the great talent in Kansas.

Congratulations to each of you for your obvious talent and hard work that in combination earned you a chance to compete at this prestigious event! I encourage you to take some time to reflect on your ac-complishments and take pride in your journey thus far. I wish you the best of luck!

Chris Zuck, Principal Olathe Northwest High School

    Debaters, Coaches, and Judges,

It has become a cliche to remark upon the strange situation we have endured as a species for nearly a year now. Through all of this, one constant has emerged: this community was not going to let debate be a casualty of the pandemic. Programmers worked tirelessly to build infrastructure for competition and tabulation; state and national organizations reoriented to tackle the new issues that arose; coaches and teachers reinvented themselves to provide meaningful education no matter what tomorrow's instruc-tional model may bring; volunteer judges showed up week in and week out, occasionally from other continents and in the middle of their night; and, most importantly, students continued to put in the work day in and day out. Each of you has earned the right to be here, and each of you is here because this community refused to let you fall.

While we cannot come together in person for this year's state championship, the Olathe Northwest team and coaching staff are still working hard to give you all the state championship you deserve. I wish each of you the best of luck as you compete in this celebration of your successful season.

Eric Skoglund, Coach Olathe Northwest Debate and Forensics

    State Teams,

Welcome to the Kansas State High School Activities Association Class 3-2-1A and Class 4A State Debate Tournaments.

Congratulations to you for your success this season and for qualifying for the State Tournament! You did not get here without many hours of preparation, practice, and competition. You did not get here without much hard work and dedica-tion to excel. You did not get here without help from others.

With all the distractions from the pandemic and related issues, you owe a big thanks to your coaches and administrators, including the folks at the Kansas State High School Activities Association, who have made the season possible despite the inability to travel and meet in-person.

We also need to thank our tournament director, Lyons High School Debate Coach Daniel Dawson, for organizing and managing this State Tournament. Although Mr. Dawson has hosted State Debate before, this is a first for him, having to schedule not just one remote State Tournament, but four remote State Tournaments - 3-2-1A 2-Speaker, 3-2-1A 4-Speak-er, 4A 2-Speaker, and 4A 4-Speaker.

Lyons hosted the tournament several years ago, and I remember telling the attending teams that of all the courses I ever took in high school or even in college, debate was the one that benefited me most as a person for several reasons. Regardless of the outcome of this tournament, you are already a winner for your earlier successes this season, and you are a winner for making it to the big dance, but more than that, you are a winner for the lessons learned in debate. You have developed and improved research skills, speaking ability, critical thinking, organization of thoughts, teamwork, and many other traits that employers desire and society needs.

Welcome to Lyons (virtually) and the State Debate Tournament! Congratulations and best of luck to you and your team!

Bill Day, Superintendent USD 405 - Lyons

    State Debate Qualifers:

Welcome to the 2021 4A and 3-2-1A State Debate Tournaments. While we continue to adjust and adapt to life in a global pandemic, we are still able to have this State Debate Tournament in a virtual format. All of you have demonstrated tre-mendous GRIT and Resilience this year as you attend school daily and as you have been debating virtually all year. The skills and experiences that you have gained and are gaining from competing in debate this year will benefit you now and in your future. Qualifying for this tournament is an accomplishment that you should be very proud of and that you should be commended for achieving. I hope that each of you competes to the best of your ability and best of luck this weekend.

Kelly L. Nusser, Principal Lyons High School

On behalf of the Lyons High School Debate Team, I would like to welcome you this year's 4A and 3-2-1A State Debate Championship Tournaments! We are honored to be your virtual host for this year’s prestigious event. You have put in many hours to learn how to debate in a new form and you have succeeded. You have worked hard to qualify to this tour-nament and deserve the chance to compete for this title. No matter what your final record, you have already proven to be a success. My wish for you this weekend is that you learn something, give 100%, and finally, have fun. Also remember to thank your coaches and the many people who have helped judge for you because without them this time of change and experimenting would not have been able to happen.

I wish you all good luck!
