Wayne’s World 3
Dear Friends, As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, and as we officially – for most of us anyway – conclude the Christmas Season (some wait until Candlemass on February 2), we hear some powerful words from Peter in today’s second reading from the Acts of the Apostles. He tells his listeners and us, “You know the word that he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” On the thirteenth of December, I marked the fifty-sixth anniversary of my baptism. I was happily surprised to receive a note from a friend who remembered Pope Francis’ call to celebrate baptismal anniversaries. I also thought about whose baptism I share: Jesus. We all share Jesus’ baptism. Ought we not devote ourselves to sharing his mission? Peter tells us in one sentence the basic post-baptismal mission of Jesus Christ: proclaiming peace, doing good, healing, and living in the awareness of the presence of God. In the late 1960’s Kent Keith wrote a list of paradoxical commandments. Many say that Saint Teresa of Calcutta read them, adapted them, and wrote her own version on the wall of her room. I think it’s worth sharing. As we mark Jesus’ Baptism and commit ourselves to partaking in his mission, as Saint Teresa of Calcutta did, perhaps we can reflect on her words.
People are often unreasonable, illogical, and
self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false
friends and some true enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you.
Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could
destroy overnight. Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous.
Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget
tomorrow. Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be
enough. Give the best you've got
anyway. You see,
In the final analysis it is between you and God;
it was never between you and them anyway. You know, Saint Teresa of Calcutta’s life, as reported by those close to her, was not always easy. She even experienced at times what spiritual directors call “spiritual darkness,” or “dark nights of the soul.” Perhaps because of the extreme poverty in which she lived and worked, maybe because she experienced death almost daily, possibly because life was just plain difficult, she expressed verbally and in writing a desire for God who at times seemed absent from her life. She willingly carried this cross and persevered in her mission to follow Christ, by doing good and healing. She gave the best she had. Many of us can relate to Saint Teresa of Calcutta. All of us carry crosses of one sort or another. Sometimes we might even question God or God’s motives. When this happens, even if it is for a brief period of time, we might be tempted to despair or to wallow in self-pity. When we encounter difficult people or things don’t go the exact way we want, we might want to give up or stop doing the right thing. The one whose Baptism we celebrate as we end the joyful season of Christmas challenges us by the way he lived – and even by the way he died – to do good always. That was his mission, and it can be ours too. So, in these beginning days of the new year, let’s think of ways we can share the mission. How will you proclaim peace? Maybe you can reconcile with an estranged family member or friend. What about befriending someone with whom you disagree? How can you remind people, in the midst of this pandemic, that God is with us? What other ways can you proclaim peace? There are thousands. How will you do good? Commit to volunteering, in the parish, at Catholic Charities, Kolbe House, or in the community. Countless agencies and efforts, not to mention Saints JFX, your parish home, need your help. So many people are doing good, engaging in the mission of Jesus. Join them! Peace,
