View this email in your browser January 1, 2021 Piano Club Monthly News & Events PIANO CLUB OF SUN CITY 2021 BOARD Ken Frerichs President Eric Laubach Vice President Susan Langland Secretary Pam Bridges Treasurer No January Friday Performance Meeting No guests or visitors are allowed on RCSC properties (with the exception of golf courses) during Phase Two. RCSC has not authorized the use of auditorium space. Restrictions may be found by clicking here. Members that paid in 2020 will have their membership extended for 2021 with no dues payable. New members must pay for a 2021 membership. PIANO CLUB OF SUN CITY Whether you enjoy simply listening to the vibrancy of live music or like performing for your friends and other club members, the Piano Club of Sun City’s monthly music programs offers something for everyone. Annual Membership: $10 per person or $15 per household for RCSC Cardholders only. To keep our club records current, please fill out a new Membership Form when you pay your 2021 dues. To save time, please download it and bring the completed form with you when you pay your dues. Piano Club of Sun City Membership Form. Courses: The Piano Club also offers affordable lessons to adults from Beginning through Intermediate levels. Courses are conducted in the Piano Club Studio on the level above the Sundial pool. If you don’t have a keyboard or piano, we can help you find a good one. Piano course tuition is $160 for an eight-week session (All materials included). Classes are offered RISK-FREE. If after your first class you are not satisfied, you may request a full refund. “An Evening to Remember”– Due to RCSC restrictions on club activities during Phase 2, plans for an Evening To Remember concert in a new format have been canceled. "An Evening to Remember 2020" CDs: Copies will be available for purchase when the club is next able to meet. Ken Frerichs 2021 Piano Club President If you enjoyed browsing in the Music Swap at our regular meetings you will be pleased to know we now have a permanent music library in our Sundial studio. Our club has accumulated a wide variety of donated music. The music has been divided into categories such as classical, holiday, duets, show tunes, religious, contemporary, vocal as well as organ and method books. You can stop in the studio during open hours, look through the music, and take whatever appeals to you. You do not need to return it unless you choose to do so. We thank Mike Hemming for volunteering his time and expertise with excel. Mike will take over the club Membership duties from Pam Bridges. A special thanks to Pam Bridges for being a tireless volunteer taking care of Membership duties in addition to being club Treasurer. You're an excellent example for us all. We appreciate you immensely. Christmas Concert on Cameo Drive Sunday, December 13 2020 driveway entertainment ends with holiday delights, comedy selections, and other elegant piano solos. Attendees helped finish the concert with the Christmas carol Silent Night sing-along. Guest soloist Marilee Eirschele, Harryzona (Harry Sitsema) local poet, Sharon Word (piano club member), Dale Elliott (piano club member, and Eric Laubach (Grand PooBah of the driveway). (left to right) Piano Club Studio Reservation Looking for a quiet place to practice your piano lessons, practice with your duet partner, or try out a piano if you are considering buying. The new Piano Club Studio is available for club members (must be a current RCSC privilege cardholder) to schedule time at the studio. The Piano Studio is a great place for you to try one of our many pianos. The studio has a console, digital pianos, and two baby grand pianos: the lovely Horugel piano donated by the family of Jean Armstrong, and a Steinway piano. If you ever wanted to try a Steinway piano, here is your chance! The new studio is in Sundial just down the hall from the Silver Stones Club. The studio is available from 1 - 4 pm Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Other times available are Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday from 8:30 am to 4 pm. Please email Ken Frerichs ([email protected] ) with questions or to schedule your time. Covid rules apply: use hand sanitizer, wear a mask, and keep 6' from others in the room. PIANO CLASSES Lessons are for beginners to experienced players. So, stretch out those fingers, roll up your sleeves and pull up a seat with one of our experienced Piano Club instructors. Classically trained, Gloria enjoys teaching and performing on both the piano and the organ. Sometimes she plays classical music, other times she plays Big Band, Dixieland, the Great American Songbook or original music. Gloria is Church Organist and Music Director at Lord of Life Church in Sun City West. Gloria loves helping people make their music come alive. For the student who took a number of years, but has been away from it and needs to refresh their reading skills, eye and hand coordination. Priscilla Pinches has lived in the Valley for over 20 years. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. She began studying piano and voice as a child and has over 30 years of experience teaching children and adults. She is currently Praise Team accompanist at Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Phoenix and a teacher at Music & Arts Center, Peoria. Her performance credits include White House appearances and, most recently, is lead singer and keyboardist for a local Jazz Quartet called the Priscilla Rose Band. Music for the Royal Fireworks is a celebratory piece of music fit for a king. 10. Nothing announces an entrance like this piece by Haydn. A perfect choice to announce the arrival of the new year. 11. The Creation - Let… there… be… LIGHT! The oratorio tells the story of God creating the world – the very first New Year’s Day if you like! 12. Strauss' brilliant opera overture 'The Bat' - what's festive about that, you might ask? Listen to the first few bars. 13. This Strauss' polka is a New Year’s concert favorite. 15. Bach’s celebratory sung by the angels, the text glorifies God in the highest heavens and bids peace to all people on earth. A fitting way to start the new year! Down 1. Embrace the wintery atmosphere in this waltz by Émile Waldteufel, inspired by skaters at the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. 2. Délibes whirling waltz conjures all the glitz and glamour of the ballroom. 3. A whirling composition by Aram Khachaturian is considered incidental music to a play by Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov, but it sounds just wonderful on its own. 5. A rollicking march by Strauss will put you in a good mood. Clap along to the lively tune, which is commonly used as an encore in concerts. 6. Strauss' a rousing orchestra, a fantastic waltz tune, and some meaty music played by the cellos: it's often played as an encore at New Year's concerts. 7. Strauss II - Wrote this sprightly music to evoke the sound of champagne bottles being uncorked. 9. There’s nothing like a trumpet fanfare to bring in the New Year, and this uplifting and cheery, piece by John Stanley is bound to put a smile on your face in time for midnight. 14. The 1812 Overture loud, brash, over the top, yet beautifully musical, this celebratory orchestral number is bound to give you a burst of optimism as the old year draws to a close.
