Jansen Venneboer’s field of operation is focused on that area where

water and land meet in the broadest sense, and involves the construction

of bridges with moving parts and fixed bridges, weirs, locks,

Archimedean screw pumping plants, floating jetties as well as retaining

systems such as (regulatory) slides, shut-off gates and non-return gates.

Jansen Venneboer is well-known in the market as a quality supplier of

civil engineering structures. During the company’s long history, it has

built up a store of knowledge and experience in the specific field in

which it operates. The company’s ‘core business’ involves steel

constructions and all the mechanical engineering components of which

objects consist, although in recent years it has also increasingly become

involved in turnkey projects.

The company’s espoused philosophy of soundness and quality is reflected

in the low maintenance costs, maximum reliability and minimum

susceptibility to breakdowns.

Engineering and product development

The heart of the organisation is its Engineering department. Whether a project involves the preparation

of tender specifications, engineering, or the developmentof a preliminary design, Jansen Venneboer’s experiencedtechnical designers will be regularly involved.

For construction projects involving engineering structuresand installations, the Engineering department subjects theobject to all of the initial project phases: pre-engineering,creating construction calculations and detail engineering. All designs are developed using modern CAD systems, andthe technical draughtsmen have every available modern calculation method and software at their disposal, such asthe Finite Element Method.

Despite its strict adherence to the standardisation of components, Jansen Venneboer still designs customised products. With an expert team of engineers working in itsDesign department, Jansen Venneboer can rightfully claim to be one of the largest specialists in hydraulic engineeringin the Netherlands. During the planning, design and realisation phases, the company’s qualified technicaldraughtsmen either propose solutions individually or fill in the details in close consultation with the customer or the consulting engineers in question.

Jansen Venneboer’s designers feel very strongly about creativity and innovation. Many projects involving a highdegree of difficulty and a number of large and complicated -sometimes architect-designed- objects are a good illustration of this.

Automation of weirs, pumping plants, locks and bridges

The control of water flow, water quantity and waterquality starts with measurement and regulation, and

nowadays almost all movable engineering structureshave electronic controls. Jansen Venneboer supplies total solutions in this specificfield. With the increasing automation of water level control,the demands governing the measurement and controlmethods also become higher and higher. Large amounts ofdata collected from the field are registered and analysed,resulting in more frequent and more accurate controlactions.Linking these actions to an existing automated system isessential.Jansen Venneboer analyses the situation and then suppliesthe functional design for controlling the object. This is followed by technical conversion of the solution into a working system, for which specialised third parties aregenerally called in. This working method means that everyproject is executed specifically for every individual customer,using the required controls and equipment for measure-ment, regulation and registration. Weirs

Water levels in the Netherlands sometimes fluctuate drastically under the influence of a wide variety of

conditions. The ever growing demand for the improved control of water levels requires reliable and long-lasting solutions.

For many decades, Jansen Venneboer’s weirs have been functioning without fail - all day, every day. By controlling the position of the gate or slide, the water level can bebrought to any required level and kept there. Weir gates are available in a wide range of sizes up to a clear width of 20 metres.

The unique concept of the torsionally rigid Jansen Venneboerweir gate provides a very reliable solution for an interestingprice, even where large clear widths and retaining heads arerequired.

In situations where minimum visibility of the weir in thelandscape is important, tilting weirs can be supplied.

The weir gate can optionally be adjusted manually or bymeans of an automated system, with the relevant electro-mechanical or hydraulic moving systems. If required, electrically driven versions with a manual option can also be supplied, so that the weir gate can still be operated even if a power cut occurs.

In those cases where the use of solar energy is more economical than installing power supply to a weir, the weircan be equipped with a fully autonomous solar energy system. The solar panels power a battery pack, from which sufficientenergy can be drawn at all times for both the measurementsystem and the gate adjustment. If the weir has a telemetrysystem for communication purposes, this too is powered by solar energy.

In some cases, it makes more sense to use slides to control water. This reliable water control system

operates on the basis of a slide which can be lowered orraised vertically. Jansen Venneboer produces these systemsmade-to-measure for every particular situation. The localcircumstances will determine which of the possible systemsis preferable.As a rule, flow-through is on the top, which ensures thatthe control function remains optimal. In special applica-tions, flow-through at the bottom of the slide is sometimespreferred. Jansen Venneboer can supply both systems.

Jansen Venneboer can supply these slides and gates insteel, stainless steel or aluminium. Here, too, a choice canbe made between electromechanical operation, hydraulicoperation or manual operation.

Another application involves the use of bulkheadsor locking doors as a protective barrier - either as

a permanent or a temporary structure - in the caseof extreme high-water situations. Jansen Venneboerhas also carried out a number of major projects inthis area, demonstrating that it is also a partner inthe battle against water.

When work needs to be carried out on weirs andlocks, Jansen Venneboer constructs special de-wateringbulkheads. These bulkheads provide a safe andwatertight seal, can be installed quickly and can be used universally for both small and large clearwidths.

For specific applications, such as the watertightsealing of tunnel tubes, Jansen Venneboer can construct hydraulically-operated damming doors.

Locks are an indispensable link in the Dutch waterways,especially given the growth in the use of leisure craft as

well as the sharp increase in water transport.

Jansen Venneboer designs and constructs complete lock complexes - where required, in combination with a weir complex - and equips them with advanced technical installations.For example, locks -and even bridges- with ”one button”operation are available. Particularly for the leisure sector,Jansen Venneboer constructs reliable self-service systemswhich enable entire navigation routes to be operated by the users themselves.

As a matter of course, discharge sluices are also included in Jansen Venneboer’s product range.

Pumping plants have always played a vital role in waterquantity management, many of them being equipped

with Archimedean screw pumps. Water managers still generally prefer to use Archimedeanscrew pumps, basing their choice on considerations such asreliability, minimum susceptibility to refuse (duckweed,planks, branches, driftwood, etc.), high efficiency, a longworking life and minimum maintenance requirements.

The design of Archimedean screw pump installations to beintegrated into pumping plants with a concrete or steelbase, and the design of completely prefabricated pumpingplants, is carried out at our own Engineering department.Needless to say, Jansen Venneboer is well-versed in makingcalculations for Archimedean screw pumps. Indeed, thecompany produces all its Archimedean screw pumps andprefab Archimedean screw pumping plants in its own factory.After the steel components have been manufactured, theyare sandblasted and given a multi-layered coating.

If the client would prefer a pumping plant that does notuse Archimedean screw pumps, Jansen Venneboer can alsosupply the complete installation, often working togetherwith third parties. Jansen Venneboer is the top specialist inretaining systems for pumping plants, such as non-returngates, turning gates and slides.

Jansen Venneboer’s various types of trash rack cleanersare very reliable components for use in pumping and

Archimedean screw pumping plants, and they guaranteean uninterrupted supply of water to pumping plants,power stations and water purification plants.

The traditional column cleaner is still very popular.However, there is also an increasing trend towards the useof the modern hydraulic unit, with its compact constructionand modular layout. Jansen Venneboer supplies a range of hydraulic cleaners, which, depending on the on-site configuration, can drive or turn or allow a combination ofboth movements. This provides maximum flexibility whenpositioning the refuse container.In the simple model, all movements are user-operated bymeans of push buttons, but a fully automatic installation isusually preferred. Logically, control of the cleaner can belinked to the control system of the entire installation.

Over the years, Jansen Venneboer has acquired a wealthof experience in the design and construction of all

kinds of movable bridges: draw bridges, bascule bridges,vertical lift bridges and swing bridges. We can convert thecustomer’s package of requirements into a custom-madesolution, either independently or in close consultation withthe customer. If required, this can include specifications atan intermediate stage, because it is exactly in this marketthat there is an increased tendency towards turnkey projects.

The product is then manufactured exclusively in our ownworkshops. The heavy construction work involved in building a bridge is one of Jansen Venneboer’s specialities.In addition, all of the moving elements for the bridge aredesigned, calculated and constructed by our own staff.Lastly, the bridge is assembled on the construction siteunder the supervision of Jansen Venneboer’s experiencedproject managers. This phase usually includes all of themechanical, electrical, control and hydraulic activities.

In the case of a turnkey project, the bridge is fully engineered, constructed and assembled. This includes the civil engineering jobs, the barrier casings and trafficcontrol, both on land and on water.

Jansen Venneboer also regularly builds fixed bridges. One of the company’s specialities are cycle and pedestrianbridges, constructed according to a unique box structure,which is cheap to build, easy to position and which alsorequires very little maintenance.

construction and operating safety, Jansen Venneboer cansupply a sturdily-built barrier casing, which can be used atmany locations in the road network - for example, for flexiblelanes and at road bridges and motorway entrances and exits.

Traffic control systems

VEVA (movable reservation barrier)When work has to be carried out in tunnels or if an acci-

dent or calamity occurs, it must be possible to close offtunnel tubes quickly and - just as important - safely, whileensuring that traffic is delayed as little as possible. JansenVenneboer’s VEVA has been used for this purpose for over20 years. In tunnels in the Netherlands and other Europeancountries, VEVA has continued to function to the full satis-faction of road managers, road users and maintenance staff.VEVA increases safety while retaining flexibility.VEVA’s area of application has become broader over theyears: it was soon discovered, for example, that VEVA is alsoan ideal instrument for creating flexible lanes. Traffic flowscan be assigned extra lanes during rush hours by usingVEVA to create openings to and from flexible lanes.

CADO (calamity passage in reservation barrier)

The calamity passage was developed to provide easyaccess to fire and ambulance services. This passage tempora-rily interrupts and creates an opening in the central reserva-tion barrier. In closed position, the barrier runs uninterrup-ted, giving CADO the same collision resistance as the fixedbarrier.CADO is usually operated remotely from a central controlroom.

Renovation

At a certain stage in the life cycle of objects, thequestion arises: should it be replaced or renovated?

Jansen Venneboer has acquired a wealth of experiencewith both of these options. This is an important advantagein cases where one component of an object has to bereplaced while it is possible to renovate the other components.

In renovation projects, old-style techniques often have tobe used to renovate an engineering structure so that it is as good as new. It is often this very combination of newand old which saves a beautiful antique structure from thescrap yard and gives it a new lease of life.

Inspection and maintenance: added value for the client

Technical inspection of engineering structures is another of Jansen Venneboer’s specialities. The status

of the steel structure, the drive system and the electrical installation, as well as the civil engineering component, are evaluated extensively and in depth.The results are recorded in inspection reports and, if necessary, in the customer’s database.On the basis of the status evaluation of the object, a maintenance plan and a corresponding maintenance budget are drawn up. If required, Jansen Venneboer can submit a quotation for a maintenance or renovation proposal and, where relevant, can also supply maintenance contracts.

Calling in Jansen Venneboer’s inspection and maintenancegroup rationalises the management process. A plannedapproach such as this generates more than just demonstrable savings in costs; in many cases, large investments can be postponed to a later date so thatmanagement costs are distributed over a longer period.And that makes maintenance much more manageable.In addition, management and maintenance activities can be contracted out in a more integrated way in theshape of a long-range maintenance programme, whereJansen Venneboer is responsible for the plannedinspection and maintenance tasks on a contract basis;an extremely efficient combination!

Floating jetties

Jansen Venneboer started building floating jetties in the1970s. Through the years, the concept has been adapted

several times to the wishes and requirements of modernmarina managers and water sport enthusiasts. At present, Jansen Venneboer supplies two modular jetty systems. The first involves a main jetty with heavy floats,giving rise to a solid structure - including end piers, if required. The second system consists of cross jetties with a high floating capacity, with a suspended main jetty construction.In this sector, Jansen Venneboer with its dedicated projectorganisation can carry out complete marina projects - ifrequired, as a turnkey project.

Now that quantity management and quality managementof water in the Netherlands are drawing increasingly

closer together in terms of their management structure,the obvious next step is to examine combined solutionswhere quality management and quantity management canalso result in shared technical solutions.

For years, Jansen Venneboer has been supplying high-qualitycomponents to purification installations. Time and again,these components have proven their reliability. Special machine construction

Jansen Venneboer regularly constructs special machines,including dryers for the food industry and belt dryers

for the gelatine industry. So the company also possessesthe knowledge and experience required for this particularsector. The machines are constructed from steel, stainlesssteel or aluminium - depending on the customer’s preference -and the components are assembled with great precisioninto an up-and-running machine at our own MachineConstruction department.

Volanta pumps

More than half of the world’s population still does nothave proper drinking water in sufficient quantities. In

many cases, the tapping of groundwater with ”bore-holepumps” is the simplest and most reliable solution. Thesehand pumps are the result of many years of field researchin Africa and intensive engineering in the Netherlands. The Volanta pump can justifiably be described as one ofthe best solutions for supplying drinking water in ruralareas. In situations where water is located at greaterdepths, the market considers the Volanta pump to be the only reliable drinking water pump, as it continues to function year after year without any appreciable maintenance. It is no wonder, therefore, that so manythousands of Volanta pumps are in use in so many countries in Africa.

The organisationJansen Venneboer has a staff of 65 and is located in modernbusiness premises on the industrial estate in Wijhe, theNetherlands. Our Production and Engineering departmentsuse sophisticated tools, while our staff are highly-trained so that they can perform their tasks to the optimum. Our Mechanical department has modern lathes and milling machines, partly CNC-controlled. Our Constructiondepartment has a spacious production workshop, and our transport fleet consists of a lorry with its own hoistinggear and a number of fully-equipped assembly vehicles.Our Support departments are also very well equipped andmake more than adequate use of modern computer applications, ensuring that we can put our organisation at the customer’s service with maximum efficiency, and thisis also reflected in our excellent price-quality ratio.

Jansen Venneboer possesses all the in-house disciplinesrequired to perform every design, production and installationtask. And whenever we require specialised products ortasks to be carried out by third parties, such as, for example,civil engineering jobs or control technology, we call in oneof our expert suppliers.
