A DEDICATION TO AUNT JANE
Her graciousness and genuine hospitality endeared Aunt Jane to all who knew her. Every girl who ever
met this lady went away feeling she was her own personal friend. The Osage Indians possibly summed
up aunt Jane best when they gave her a name meaning “highly honored and generous lady”.
Aunt Jane was born in Creston, Iowa, on August 8, 1877, to John and Matilda Gibson, the first of three
children. Growing up in a socially prominent banking family, Miss Gibson eventually became
acquainted with the town barber, Frank
Phillips, an enterprising young
businessman in this small rural
community. A courtship followed and on
February 18, 1897, Frank and Jane were
married in Creston at the local Methodist
Episcopal church.
Soon after the marriage, Phillips sold his
string of barber shops and started selling
bonds for his father-in-law. By 1903, the
banking business drew Phillips south to
Indiana Territory and the town of
Bartlesville. In time, Frank and his brother,
L.E., coupled banking with oil. After
numerous undertakings of promoting
drilling ventures plus forming and selling
small oil companies, they founded Phillips
Petroleum Company. As they say, the rest
is history.
When the women of the Phillips Petroleum
Company organized a sorority and named
it in honor of Aunt Jane, she lost little time
in becoming personally involved in the
club, calling the members “her girls”. Aunt
Jane attended several National
Conventions. With never failing
generosity, Aunt Jane often picked up the
tab for various events and sent flowers to
members in attendance. During National Conventions, she warmly received all comers to her hotel
suite, and if ever she tired or longed for quiet at these times, no on suspected. In 1988, the Jane
Phillips Sorority would become known as the Jane Phillips Society.
Some of Aunt Jane’s favorite activities included playing bridge, reading, collecting books and working
jigsaw puzzles. Aunt Jane had a son, John, and she and her husband Frank became legal guardians of
two young girls, Francis and Sara Jane. Just one week shy of her 71st birthday, Aunt Jane passed.
Today and with every act performed on behalf of JPS, we honor Aunt Jane.

We have a new Banner! We wanted a way to let the community know who and
what JPS is at events we sponsor.
Hope everyone had a nice July with some summer fun along the way. We had our
quarterly membership meeting on the 25th and thoroughly enjoyed watching Greg and
Gail reenactment the skit for Pattie so she could see it. They did a great job again! The
Book Swap was a success with many books finding new homes. What a fun way to clean
out and restock! And of course, we had to eat. We fixed Sandy Mason’s yummy recipe
for French Dip Sandwiches. It is very easy. Take one packet of dry beefy onion soup
mix and cook a chuck roast in your slow cooker until it falls apart. Delicious!
(l-r) Tish Harris, local Vice President, presented gifts to past National Secretary Pattie
Shipp and past National President Michelle Swaney for their service last year on the
National Board.

CHANNEL CHAPTER JANUES
Pasadena, TX
August 2019
Reporters: Kathy Daughtridge, Sally Dennett
Kathy reporting this month.
The Channel Chapter really enjoyed hosting the
convention this year. It was so great to see old friends
and to continue the tradition. Now that it is over we
are back to the normal mode.
For our August meeting we plan to take a road trip to
Baton Rouge to visit Nell Webb, a long time JPS
member.
8
Sharon Robinette is still riding her bicycle trying to get
used to the heat. She will be riding in the annual
“Hotter N’ Hell” bike ride in Wichita Falls on August
24th. Pray for a cool front.
This month we observe the memory of Aunt Jane, the
wife of Frank Phillips and the person who gave our
society its name. At convention the Channel Chapter
donated their portrait of Aunt Jane to the Woodlands
Chapter who will be hosting the 2020 convention.
Bye for now

July’s meeting featured Wes & Roberta Phillips
Researching your genealogy
Wes Phillips started by relating his own experiences researching his family roots. He has spent 34 years in
the National Park Service, 20 years at Lake Meredith. His mother was the one that got West interested in
genealogy. Wes’ dad was 50 when Wes was born and he was the first of two children. Wes’ dad was 80
when he became a grandfather for the first time. Wes traced ancestor James Phillips back to Cornwell
England. Some of his family were raised in Maryland. Wes had one ancestor that had 21 children all but
6 died before the age of 2. He and his wife have several books that trace several family lines in which the
family members describe the way of life in their lives. He gave advice on how to start your genealogy
journey and some tools to use to research your family history. It was very interesting on the many spellings
that your last name might’ve gone through to end at your present last name. Wes stated his last name has
had many different spellings which has caused issues when he was researching his family tree. Wes stated
when starting your family tree first write your own biography then get the biography’s of each of your
immediate family members.
Wes Phillips’ relative James Phillips and Roberta’s great grandmother who was Czech
Wes Phillips shows a picture of his
90 yr old great grandfather Adam

pictures that were available back
in his great grandfather’s time.

are several ways to start
your research and with
online assistance it is
getting easier to
research your family
tree. However many
records are not in the
electronic system and to
do thorough research
you may have to go to
county court houses or
use other archival
systems to search paper
records to find what you
need on your family’s
history or relatives.

OKLAHOMA CITY CHAPTER
Sharon Eaton, Reporter August 2019
Greetings from Oklahoma City,
After convention, I had the following note from Marianne McEwin.
“Channel Chapter, thank you for a wonderful Convention! The hotel was great and so
was the service and food! Really enjoyed visiting with everyone.
As soon as I arrived home from Convention, I met my son and daughter in law in the Walmart parking lot to pick up my grandson, Parker! We went to Longhorn Caverns, the movies twice, played putt-putt and arcade games and swam with cousins in my sister’s pool a couple of times. We had a big week then I took him home to Grand Prairie on Saturday. He was missing his parents by then. He’s a good boy mostly and is really smart at 8 - 3/4 years old. A fun age! Now I have to get caught up with my duties as DRT president. Have a great month! Marianne”
Robin Miller and her family spent a week in Colorado enjoying the cooler weather and
the scenery. The kids had a great time but Robin suffered some altitude sickness for a
day or two.

Jerry and Sharon Eaton spent several days in Philadelphia – but I can’t say we had cooler
weather. It was extremely hot - but we were able to see several things that were on
Jerry’s ‘bucket list’. First up was the Liberty Bell.
Liberty Bell Jerry standing at the back side of the Liberty Bell.
It amazed me that so many people all lined up in front of the Liberty Bell to take their
picture - you could not even see the Bell in their pictures!
We also made a pilgrimage to Pennepack Baptist Church which was built in 1688 and is
the oldest Baptist church in Pennsylvania. Jerry’s 6th great-grandfather George Eatton
was a pastor at the church sometime during that time and is buried in the cemetery at the
church. The stones are so old that it was only barely possible to read most of them. We
had a picture of Rev. George Eatton’s stone so we knew what to look for. George’s
father, John, was one of three Eatton’s who came to America on, I believe, the second
Mayflower trip. You can see both George and John’s name on the very bottom of the
stone.
15
We also went to the Unites States Mint and then across the street to the Christ Church
Burial Ground where we saw Benjamin Franklin’s stone. People leave pennies on his
stone – I am sure he never expected that to happen.
My favorite was a visit to the Museum of the American Revolution where there was a
display of American flags dating from 1776 to 1888.
16
I hope you have had some time this summer to relax, take time to visit with friends and
family or travel and mark off some of your own ‘bucket list’ items.
Finally, I would like to give a gigantic ‘shout out’ to the Bartlesville chapter. For their
July membership meeting, they asked their members to bring back to school supplies to
benefit the elementary school that the Oklahoma City chapter helps. They also collected
money from members who wished to contribute to this effort. This means so much to the
Oklahoma City chapter – mere words cannot do it justice. Thank you to the Bartlesville
chapter for their display of JPS love and friendship.
I hope to see everyone in The Woodlands, Texas in June 2020.

AUGUST Fun Facts
August is known for many things, including the dog days of summer, National
Watermelon Day (Aug. 3) and National Smile Week (Aug. 5-11). But there are many
other fun facts associated with summer’s last full month.
August is named after Augustus Caesar, founder and the first emperor of the Roman
Empire, who was posthumously adopted by his maternal great-uncle Gaius Julius
Caesar.
In the early Roman calendar, August was actually the sixth month of the year. It was
originally 30 days in length, but an extra day was added so that it would equal the
number of days in July, which was named after Julius Caesar.
August has two birthstones: peridot and sardonyx. Peridot is among the oldest known
gemstones and is green in color. Sardonyx, which is lesser-known, is a white- and
brown-banded gemstone once believed to have mystical powers.
• The official flower for August is the gladiolus. These vertical-
growing flowers were named from the Latin "gladius," meaning a
sword.
• Fans of Elvis Presley mourn each Aug. 16th, the day the famed
singer died in 1977.
• People born in August fall under the sun zodiac signs of Leo and
Virgo. Leos are known to be dramatic, creative and outgoing.
Virgos have acute attention to detail and are the people most likely to dedicate
themselves to serving. They also are loyal, hardworking and analytical.
• Although civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., is
honored in January, when he was born, he is best known
for his famed "I have a dream" speech, which was given on
Aug. 28, 1963.
