Meet the 2013-2014 Kiwanis International President

Gunther Gasser, Kiwanis International President for 2013-2014

Gunter Gasser of Spittal an der Drau, Austria, was elected president-elect of Kiwanis International in June 2012 at the 97th Annual Kiwanis International Convention in New Orle-ans, Louisiana. Gunter has been a Kiwanian since 1987, when he joined as a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Spittal an der Drau, serving as president in 1991-92. He also is a founding member of the Tombstone, Montana, Kiwanis Club and an honorary member of Austria’s Wien-Europe 1 club. Distinguished governor of the Austria District in 1999-2000, Gunter served as chairman of the district’s new-club building, marketing and past governors committees; was chairman of the Kiwanis International-European Federation’s (KIEF) youth service, marketing the foundation committees; and was a KIEF representative to the 2001-02 Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France.

He was elected to a three-year term as Kiwanis International Trustee in 2003, Gunter has served on the board’s communications and conventions, partnership/community and corporate alliances, operations, finance, international relations and executive committees. He has served as board counselor to several districts and was a member of the Kiwanis committees on by-laws and resolutions, as well as the new district and new worldwide service project task forc-es. Gunter is a Kiwanis life member, Tablet of Honor recipient, George F. Hixson Fellow and a member of the Heritage Society of the Kiwanis International Foundation. He also is a member of the foundation’s President’s Advisory Council. He is also a charter Walter Zeller Fellow. Outside of Kiwanis, Gunter is a member of the Economic-Mechanical Engineering Association; former member of the Economic Forum for Top Managers in Austria; a manager of sports clubs; and a member of the City Development Group. Gunter and his wife, Christiana, have one son and one daughter.

Sixth, the new Miracle League field in Ankeny opened Saturday, September 7, with 40 kids and four teams! Special thanks to the Ankeny Kiwanis and Kerry Walter-Ashby for leading the steering committee. Great accomplishment!

And, in case you missed it, our own International Trus-tee Jane Erickson has announced that she is a candi-date for the office of Vice President in Kiwanis Interna-tional. The election will be in Tokyo-Chiba in July 2014. We need to have as many of us as we can at the Kiwa-nis International Convention to help Jane get elected. Make plans now to attend! I also want to thank First Lady Jan for her efforts in launching the Red Barrel program. So far, at least sev-en communities are now using these "Red Barrels" to gather food at grocery stores. The food is collected by fellow Kiwanis members and distributed to local food pantries. This program will continue to provide a needed service for years to come. She will continue to lead this service project, so if your club is thinking about this, do contact her. We have

Traveled 8,951 miles through August; Made official visits to 14 of the 24 Divisions; Made 27 trips to Grimes to help build and support

the new Grimes/Countyline club; Made seven trips to Columbus, NE to help build and

support the Columbus/Next Generation club; Made 12 trips to Waukee as we attempt to open a

new club there; Drove 600 miles to O'Neill, NE in another new club

building attempt; Attended Key Leader, Teen Maze, and Camp OK; Helped pack 300 backpacks with hygiene items in

Milford, IA; Helped sack 1,200 Meals from the Heartland in

Webster City, IA; Organized a "work day" at the Kiwanis Miracle

League before the spring season; Celebrated 25 years of Women in Kiwanis in Iowa

City; and Pretended to pitch at the Lincoln Salt Dogs baseball

game. Our list could go on and on (and please forgive if we've not mentioned YOUR division or your club). But it's not about the number of visits or the miles driven. It's really about the people we have met and the wonderful Kiwa-nis experiences that we have had with each of you. Please continue to make a difference in your communi-ties and in the lives of children everywhere. Kiwanis truly "serves the children of the world. "Hello my fellow Kiwanians!

2012-2031 Reflections by Bob Mitchell, 2012-2013 Governor

This will be my final E-newsletter as Governor for the 2012-13 year. It sounds like a cliché, but, really, where has the time gone? So far, we have had lots of wind-shield time, visited MANY of our Kiwanis cities and towns in the District, and have been heavily involved in the new club building--in Co-

lumbus/Next Generation, and Grimes/Countyline--and we're now working on Waukee, IA and O'Neill, NE. I thought I would go back and review the year so I can mention some of the highlights. But first, let me say again what a privilege and honor it has been for Jan and me to serve as your Governor and First Lady. We can all be proud of what this District has accomplished this year.

First, we are NUMBER ONE in the nation in Net Growth. Just five of the North American Districts have gained members. So far this year, we have added 474, but we have lost over 300, for a net gain of 137 through the end of August. Our theme this year has been "Service Delivers Membership," and the reverse, "Membership Delivers Service." The good service we do at-tracts like-minded folks. The more members we have, the more service we can provide. And, as our slogan says, "When we Score One for Ki-wanis, the KIDS Win!"

Second, we are also one of only two Districts in the USA that has added two new clubs: Grimes/Countyline and Columbus/Next Generation. And we are still working on adding at least one more in September.

Third, we are also NUMBER ONE in the Midwest Region for giving to Eliminate. Jim Dane, Dis-trict Coordinator, tells me we are at 39.3% of our target with gifts and pledges exceeding $1.2 million. We also have 74% of our clubs partici-pating with 15 pledging to be Model clubs and two clubs in the major gift category. Congratu-lations on that!

Fourth, we are THIRD in the nation, just behind the California/Nevada/Hawaii and Florida Districts, with 36 Aktion Clubs, thanks to all of the hard work of Aktion Club Administrator Floyd Hutzel!

Fifth, our attendance at both the Mid-Year Confer-ence and the District Convention exceeded 350. Those are numbers that many Districts would love to own.

plan on the District’s website. Goal 1: Kiwanis membership will have a positive net growth every year. Encourage clubs to take advantage of the best fea-

tures of electronic communications to identify and reach potential members.

Target potential members who are young profes-sionals; build one Young Professionals club a year.

Target potential members who are nearing retire-ment; at least 25% of new members will be between the ages of 58 and 69.

Foster a diverse membership in terms of ethnicity, age and gender.

Build 12 new clubs through October 2016.

Goal 2: Ensure volunteer leaders at all levels are well prepared and trained. Succession planning will be encouraged and em-

phasized for all District offices. Review the effectiveness and value of the Mid-Year

Conference and District Convention. Review the curriculum and effectiveness of the cur-

rent Club Leadership Education process. Promote the use of KI webinars for all clubs and

district leaders.

Goal 3: Support and nurture all clubs so they can be successful, thriving and vibrant. All clubs will achieve a membership of at least 20. Recruit Kiwanians to provide mentoring support for

each club with sub-20 membership. Solicit exit information from persons leaving Kiwa-

nis. Encourage clubs and divisions to prepare a written

strategic plan, which would include a growth plan for their club.

Goal 4: Kiwanis will enhance its importance and rel-evancy to the communities and neighborhoods it serves. Prepare and execute a public relations plan that

focuses on the good that Kiwanis/Kiwanians do in our communities.

Prepare and execute a district-wide plan to cele-brate the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis International in 2015.

Identify a new district-wide service project of signifi-cant impact.

Promote the K-Serve model to bring together com-munity partners and the whole family of Kiwanis clubs in a community to engage in short-term, high-impact service projects.

Goal 5: Support the growth and development of all Service Leadership Programs (SLPs). Add an additional 50 SLPs between now and Sep-

tember 30, 2016.

I Have No Goals! By Andy Bradley, 2013-2014 Governor

Some of you who have heard me speak over the last several months know that I am fond of saying “I have no goals” as the Governor of the Nebraska-Iowa District. “Astonishing!” you may say. But the key word in that pronouncement is “I.” That’s because I’m break-ing with tradition in a big way. You see, our Board

of Trustees – still in its infancy stage at one-year-old – set about creating a new long-range strategic plan for the district, an undertaking that hadn’t been attempted in many a year. After some day-long sessions and numerous confer-ence calls, the Board agreed on a new plan last April. That plan was unveiled at the District Conference in Au-gust. As a matter of fact, many of our breakout sessions focused on components of the plan. So, I have no goals. But collectively we – the 6,000 Ki-wanians from the 190 clubs stretching from North Platte to Waterloo -- have seven important and ambitions goals. My job this year is: to help inform every Kiwanian about our District’s

inspiring vision and challenging goals; to seek buy-in and commitment from all Kiwanians

from east to west; and to steward the implementation process.

Therefore, my goals are the district’s goals. My vision is the District’s vision. And it is the intent of the Board to ensure that the succession of governors now and in the future is committed to making those goals a reality. The first order of business in creating a plan was to craft the Mission and Vision of the District. Our Mission: The Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis District is a dynamic organization of local volunteers dedicated to changing the Heartland one child and one community at a time. Our Vision: Committed, civic-minded Kiwanians and vibrant, diverse, and growing clubs make a big differ-ence in their hometowns by identifying and meeting the pressing needs of children and families. What follows is a summary of the seven goals, as well as some of the key objectives that will help us reach those goals. The action steps underpinning these goals and objectives can be viewed by accessing the entire

KI Convention in Tokyo-Chiba by Frank Murphy, District Secretary

From July 17-20, 2014, Kiwanis will host its 99th Interna-tional Convention in Tokyo-Chiba. This will be a great opportunity to meet Kiwanians from around the world and to visit attractions of Japan. I have been to Japan three times, visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. You will discover that Japan is very clean, very safe, and has excellent public transporta-tion. Food can be expensive in Japan if you eat in the ho-tel, but if you look for neighborhood restaurants and if you like fish, noodles, sushi, and/or tempura, the cost is reasonalbe. Restaurants display meals in store windows; you point to the food you want. Memories of my visits to Japan include the following: Tokyo - I would recommend arriving prior to the con-vention and taking a local sightseeing tour of Tokyo and then – if you are adventurous– learning the subway sys-tem. For me, highlights in Tokyo included: Imperial Plaza – this is where the Japanese Em-

peror lives. It is a stone fortress with historic moats and walls around the seat of Japan’s imperial household.

Meiji Jingu Shrine – this is a sacred wooded area in the city center that is home to numerous bird spe-cies. Founded in 1921, its purpose was to enshrine the Emperor and Empress Meiji; the first sovereign leaders of Japan after the demise of the Samurai class rule.

Asakusa Kan-non Temple – a Buddist temple that is Tokyo’s oldest most col-orful, and highly renowned Bud-dhist sanctuary. A walk around this neighborhood makes Tokyo lov-able.

Ginza District – this is home to the fanciest stores, Japanese and foreign alike. Ginza is where you’ll find all the luxury brands from around the world. You’ll also find lunch in the department store cafés. Stop at the basement food halls in the department stores (every department store has one). Remem-ber to find a seat; it’s considered rude in Japan to eat standing up. It’s also considered rude to let your

(Continued on page 9)

Build and maintain at least five SLPs in each of the district’s 24 divisions by September 30, 2016.

Create an SLP Awareness Week when Kiwanis clubs can feature sponsored SLP programs at their regular Kiwanis meetings.

Achieve full compliance with the Kiwanis Interna-tional Youth Protection Guidelines by September 30, 2014.

Goal 6: The District will have governance systems and structures in place to support dynamic growth and high impact community services.

A sub-committee of the Board of Trustees will exam-ine the current boundaries, territories and club makeup for each Division.

Update District policies and procedures to ensure con-sistency with bylaws and current practices.

Examine the effectiveness of the current District awards programs, and recommend changes to the Board.

Examine the effectiveness of current communications vehicles used in the District to disseminate information to members.

Goal 7: The Eliminate project will meet or exceed the District’s $3.15 million fundraising goal. A cumulative total of $2.67 million will be raised by

September 30, 2014. The $3.15 million received/pledged will be reached

and announced at the 2015 KI convention in Indian-apolis.

Recognize, acknowledge and promote successes at cluster meetings, and at the Mid-Year Conference and District conventions.

The Strategic Plan will be reviewed and updated period-ically by the Board of Trustees. Suggestions and com-ments regarding the plan can be submitted any time to your Lieutenant Governor, any one of the Board of Trus-tees, or me. Please review the comprehensive plan located on this website. You may request a presentation related to the plan as part of my visit to your club or division in the coming year. So while I don’t have any goals on my agenda as Gov-ernor, we as Kiwanians have seven very important

goals to strive toward in the coming months and years. My job is to keep that vision before us al-ways, to steward our pro-gress as we continue to grow and to serve our communities in increasing-ly meaningful ways. Let’s all have a great year.

NE-IA District Circle K By Lenora Hanna, Circle K Administrator

NE-IA Circle K ended the 2012-13 year with eight active paid clubs and 227 members. The current clubs consist of three in Iowa – Iowa State University, University of Iowa, and University of Northern Iowa; and six clubs in Nebraska – Midland University, Nebraska Wesleyan University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Nebraska-Kearney and Wayne State College. Our 2013-14 District Board consists of Governor Makenzie Patrick, Midland University; Secretary/Treasurer Katherine Kotas, Wayne State College; Me-dia Relations Specialist Jordan Peters, Wayne State College; Area 1 Lt. Governor Nicole Yau, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Area 2 Lt. Governor Kelsey Olt-manns, Wayne State College; Area 3 Lt. Governor Jor-dan Wehrmeier, University of Nebraska-Omaha; and Area 4 Lt. Governor Anh Ngo, University of Iowa. In June, two of our Board members (Makenzie and Anh) attended CKI International Convention held in con-junction with the Kiwanis International Convention in Vancouver. In July, Governor Makenzie attended Lead-ership Academy which is a week “in seclusion” (in Indi-ana) building leadership skills. We will be holding Falliday again this year at Spring-brook in Guthrie Center, IA on October 4-5. Our goal is to surpass last year’s event attendance of 25 members. There will be focus on several service projects and a fundraiser for the Eliminate Project. The CKI 2012-13 District Convention was to be held in Omaha the week-end of February 22-24, 2013 but because of very bad weather conditions, we cancelled the event. The 2013-14 DCON will be held in Omaha the weekend of Febru-ary 21-23 at the Best Western Settle Inn. Steve Sie-mens will be our banquet speaker on Saturday evening. We will be chartering a club at Creighton University in Omaha in October and there is also activity in re-chartering Coe College in Cedar Rapids and Briar Cliff in Sioux City IA; there is also interest in a club at Cen-tral Community College in Columbus. The following pro-spective clubs were identified in the Strategic Plan for 2013-16: Morningside College and Briar Cliff in Division 5, Coe College in Division 9, Drake University in Divi-sion 13 or 16, Peru State College in Division 21, Con-cordia University in Division 22, and Hastings College in Division 23.

Key Club – We Need Your Support By Tina Pollpeter, Key Club Administrator

The Nebraska-Iowa Key Club District is off to a great start this year. With your help, thousands of Key Club-bers are already volunteering countless hours to their local schools and communities. Service projects, fund-raisers and membership drives are in the works for the remainder of the year, and no Key Club could do it with-out the support of their local Kiwanis Club. It’s because of you that these students thrive in their schools and go on to be great leaders! With that said, we need your help in a few areas where we have set goals this year. 1. To set an all-time record membership of 2,500

members. The Nebraska-Iowa Key Club District reached approximately 2,125 students in member-ship during the 2012-2013 school year. Our all-time record membership was 2,473 students, which was achieved during the 2009-2010 school year. Way you can help: Encourage your clubs to hold mem-bership drives by helping with an ice cream social or pizza party to kick off the semester.

2. To reach 60 Key Clubs. As of August 2013, the Ne-braska-Iowa Key Club District had 55 active Key Clubs. Way you can help: Make sure your Key Club pays its dues by November 1 and doesn’t become delinquent this year. If your club isn’t sponsoring a Key Club, start a Key Club by contacting a member of the Key Club District Board.

3. Increase attendance at district functions. Approxi-mately 65 Key Clubbers attended the March 2013 Nebraska-Iowa Key Club Convention in Omaha, Nebraska. Approximately 50 Key Clubbers attended the December 2012 Nebraska-Iowa Key Club Mid-Year Leadership Conference in West Des Moines, Iowa. Right now, less than 3% of Nebraska-Iowa Key Clubbers attend a district function. Way you can help: Make sure at least two representatives from your Key Club sign up to attend at least one district function. The 2013 Mid-Year Leadership Conference is December 7-8, 2013, in Omaha, Ne-braska. The annual Key Club District Convention will take place in March 2014 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Thanks for all you do as a member of Kiwanis. On be-half of the Key Club District Board, we appreciate your ongoing support. We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to reporting the progress that we’re making on our goals to the Kiwanis District Board in the months ahead.

Aktion Clubs in Action By Floyd Hutzell, Aktion Club Administrator

Another great year for Aktion Clubs in our district! We ended the year with 878 members in 36 paid clubs. Clubs in Atlantic, Wayne, and Des Moines were reac-tivated. New clubs were built in Clarinda and Council Bluffs. Our district stands tall in the total structure of Ak-tion Club. Only California and Florida have more clubs and members. Many thanks to the sponsoring clubs and agencies involved. We have many Kiwanians who are strong advocates for those living with a disability. There are now over 550 Aktion Clubs with over 11,550 mem-bers in eight countries. Aktion Club continues to be the fastest growing segment of Kiwanis. Why should my club sponsor any Aktion Club? There are many adults living with a disability. Bringing them into the Kiwanis family allows them to give back and feel a part of a larger organization. Let me share just a few of the activities of our Aktion Clubs. Here’s how some of our Aktion Clubs are participating in The Eliminate Project: Algona - $2,343; Ames - $1,437; Fremont - $852.00; Iowa City - $262; Sioux City - $250; Omaha - $392; Jefferson - $1,300; Chariton - $182; Storm Lake - $600; Spirit Lake - $1,850. I am sure even more has been raised by now, but I share this just to give an idea how our Aktion Clubs are stepping up to participate with this Kiwanis project. What do Aktion Clubs do? They do what our “regular” clubs do. They have service activities and fundraisers. The Council Bluffs “Black Squirrel” Aktion Club recently held a talent show. Advisor Marland Gammon brought out the best talent in the club members and produced a two-hour show. It included singing, piano playing, guitar playing and a performance by “the Blues Brothers,” “ The Village People,” and a special appearance by Char-ley Brown and his crew. The Fremont, NE club holds a “Tables of Tapestry” event every year. Club members decorate over 40 banquet tables and invite friends to come for an evening of sharing a catered meal and viewing the various tables. The Boone, IA Club holds a yard sale and then gives back to the community by as-sisting a number of local organizations. The list goes on – just like our Kiwanis clubs. Aktion Club members attend District conferences. If you attended either the Mid Year or District convention, you found yourself mingling with Aktion Club members. We also hold at least one “Regional Conference” each year. Plans are now underway to hold one next spring in Newton. These are held to allow clubs within a one and a half hour drive to spend a day of sharing and learning.

How to sponsor a club? The first contact is often the Lt. Governor. Clubs showing an interest can then con-tact the District Administrator Floyd Hutzell. He will ei-ther visit the club or send one of the regional assistant administrators to help determine if sponsoring an Aktion Club is an activity your club would like to initiate. Per-haps the first step is to find a local agency working with clients with a disability. While clubs can be started with only Agency sponsorship, it is best to have both the Kiwanis and Agency sharing responsibilities. The NE-IA District Kiwanis stands tall in Aktion Club activity. Our district had 12 Aktion Club members and eight advisors from Algona, Jefferson and Fremont attend the recent Aktion Club Training and Leadership conference in Indianapolis. All came away with new friends, ideas and a renewed enthusiasm for Aktion Club. Our district members shared their club activities with more than 150 attendees. This conference will be held in Anaheim, CA next summer. At least two clubs are already making plans to attend. Want to get in on the Aktion? Contact your District Ad-ministrator Floyd Hutzell at [email protected].

We have two new clubs this past year. Welcome to the Culler Middle School (charter date 10-22-12) and Atlan-tic Middle School (charter date 6-7-13). Thank you to Lincoln Sunrise and Atlantic Kiwanis Clubs for sponsor-ing these two new Builders Clubs! As we look forward to the new year, clubs in progress include Oskaloosa,IA and Wahoo, NE. for a Builders Club. This could be especially helpful for schools who have no local Kiwanis Club. If you have questions, please let me know. It will take all of us to share this information across our district.

Background screening will now be required for Ki-wanis members working with youth. Please refer to “Youth Protection Guidelines (as of October 1, 2013)” found at http://www.kiwanisone.org/Pages/Resources/default.aspx?PageID=595

As you prepare and adhere to these new policies, con-tact me for questions you may have. My contact infor-mation is Gail Castillo at 641-425-6914 or Email at [email protected]

Kiwanis K-Kids Lynda Henningsen, K-Kids Administrator

It’s been a good year for K-Kids in the Nebraska-Iowa District. With three new clubs added this past year, we currently have 27 active K-Kids clubs. And although there are currently no reporting procedures for Bring Up Grades and Terrific Kids program, we know that there are many clubs sponsoring these wonderful Kiwanis Kids programs in our district. Our three K-Kids clubs chartered this year come from Divisions 21 and 22. From Division 21, we welcome Ev-erett Elementary (sponsor Lincoln Center). And from Division 22, we welcome Holmes Elementary (sponsor Cornhusker Kiwanis) and Pyrtle Elementary (sponsor Lincoln Capitol City). This upcoming year the focus for new K-Kids clubs will be in those divisions outlined in the Strategic Plan where we need more Service Leader-ship Programs. We have several good prospects for the upcoming 2013-2014 year. In fact, I just received word in September that the Lincoln Northeast Kiwanis club has voted to sponsor a club. This past June, I was fortunate to be able to attend one of their club meetings and make a presentation on K-Kids where club members asked sev-eral good questions about the program. I am so pleased that their members saw the value in this Kiwanis Kids program and are taking the next step to organize and charter a K-Kids club at Saratoga Elementary in Lincoln, NE. If you would like a presentation on a Kiwanis Kids pro-gram for your club, I will do whatever I can to make that happen. The face-to-face interaction that is made at these meetings is both motivating and educational. We also have a wonderful DVD that I can send to you that explains step-by-step how to start a K-Kids club. This DVD also contains presentations for school faculty and parents. I can also send you printed material if you like. Another focus in the upcoming year will be to make sure that all Kiwanians who are advisors or who are involved with Kiwanis Kids programs are aware of and following the Youth Protection Guidelines that were approved at the Kiwanis International Convention this year. These guidelines took effect October 1, 2013. I will also be encouraging our Kiwanis K-Kids Clubs to make submissions for the various International K-Kids awards that are given out yearly. And with Halloween right around the corner, let's not

forget about the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Kids Cam-paign where you and your youth clubs can support the Eliminate Project by collecting money with this kids’ campaign. Finally, I am pleased to tell you that two Kiwanians from the Nebraska-Iowa District will be serving on the 2013-2014 International Committee on Kiwanis Kids. Jim Dane and I are pleased to be serving on this board. The committee is being charged with ways to improve, en-hance and encourage the growth of K-Kids Clubs, Bring Up Grades (BUG) and Terrific Kids. If you don't have a K-Kids program in your division, now is the time to get one started. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or at (402) 981-4321 if you would like more information on any of the Kiwanis Kids programs.

Service Leadership Programs (SLP) Corner This section of the Kiwanis newsletter is dedicated to articles from our Service Leadership programs which include Key Clubs, Circle K Clubs, Aktion Clubs, Young Children Priority One, K-Kids, and Builders Clubs,

Young Children Priority One by Jeanne Virtue, YCPO Administrator

Young Children Priority One (YCPO) is an ongoing community service program of Kiwanis International that addresses the needs of children age birth to 5. All clubs are encouraged to carry out at least two YCPO projects per calendar year, though many clubs are able to do more—serving children, families and communities. Young Children Priority One focuses on four key areas: 1) maternal and child health, 2) child care and develop-ment, 3) parent education and support, and 4) safety and pediatric trauma. During my first year (2010-2011) as YCPO Chairperson for the District, Paul Lytle conducted a survey which helped us all learn about the projects currently under-way in the NE-IA District. He discovered many more YCPO projects were undertaken. They just weren't be-ing reported as relating to children ages birth to 5. . So, my first assignment was to encourage all club secretaries to include the age group affected by their projects when they did their monthly reports. As a result, I developed handouts, some of my own and some from Kiwanis International, for distribution at our Mid-Year Conference and District Conventions, thus encouraging clubs to look into more or different types of YCPO projects. The first item of business in developing a new project is conducting a “needs survey” in your community and designating project chairperson for your club. Partnering with other organizations on a specialized

let your cell phone ring in a restaurant.

Tsukiji Fish Mar-ket – this is the world's largest wholesale and sea-food market, han-dling over 2,000 tons of marine products and 400 species of seafood per day. In order to see the auc-tion of the frozen and fresh tuna, you have to apply at the Kachidoki Gate prior to 5 am. Only 120 visi-tors are permitted to view the auction on a first-come basis. Visitors can enter the wholesale market after 9 am. The outer market has all sorts of food related goods, knives and fresh seafood restaurants. Here you will find the freshest sushi you will ever eat.

Tokyo nightlife – Come dusk, the city blossoms into giant neon lights and paper lanterns. Tokyo has no one particular center of nighttime activity, but the most famous nightclub districts are probably Shinju-ku and Roppongi. I remember having dinner, then feeling very safe walking around the neighbor-hoods, absorbing the nightlife atmosphere, and win-dow shopping at the many stores.

Kyoto – If you go to only one place outside of Tokyo, it should be Kyoto. This city was not bombed during WWII, so the sheer number of temples, castles, shrines, and other beautiful archi-tectural attractions make it a walk-through of old Ja-pan. Highlights include the

Kiyomizudera Temple, the Ryoanji Temple, Nijo Castle, the Nishiki Market, and the Gold-en Pavilion.

There is a section of Kyota called Goin that is home to the geishas. Late afternoon is the best time to see them but have your camera ready, as they do not linger for photographs.

Hiroshima – from Kyoto it is a day trip to Hiroshima on the bullet train. Hiroshima is the site of the Peace Park and museum which highlights the atomic bombing of the city. Ask your hotel to write the addresses of the train station and the Peace Park. This will allow you to take a taxi from the train station to the Peace Park and return. In summary, Japan is an incredible country with many attractions. Take this opportunity to visit Japan and at-tend the 2014 Kiwanis International Convention. Kiwa-nis will negotiate discount rates for convention hotels which will all be within walking distance of the conven-tion center. The hotel names and registration will be posted on the KI website in January 2014.

project is very acceptable. One example might be work-ing with a hospital group or helping parents of newborns at your local hospital. Don't be afraid to ask questions; my job is to help you and your clubs with ideas, support and reassurance. Kiwanis International is looking at changing the YCPO name to Early Childhood Development, so watch for the change. My mission/job will remain the same; to present project ideas and encourage clubs to get more involved with projects that help young children and their parents. If you missed the displays at the Mid-Year Conference and/or District Convention, and need ideas, give me a call, or send me an email ([email protected]) and I'll find a way to get some information to you.
