In every culture worldwide, the family is of special importance. And Toastmasters is

one of the greatest families. Deriving from our mission stated by the Toastmasters' Godfather, Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, "Toastmasters helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and

thinking". Senior Toastmasters, the parents of the Toastmasters' family, teach junior Toastmasters vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding and contribute to the betterment of mankind. These are the ultimate objectives of each family.

The love of a family is life's greatest blessing. The spirit of a family relationship affects our entire lives. As Jane Howard said "Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one."

Manama Toastmasters has proved over the decades that it is the happiest house in the Toastmasters family where we meet on a weekly basis to share our happiness and seek senior members for their advice in our Toastmasters journey. The massive amount of emails, calls and queries during the last couple of weeks about the health condition of our dear member, TM Khalid Amin, have demonstrated our union beyond the Toastmasters boundaries. The Horizon and the club’s family extend their salutation and sincere wishes for our brother to get well soon insha Allah.

This is Manama Toastmasters Club. One family forever. AlyAAl-MAhroos

What is Toastmasters? What would be your answer to this question?

I received different replies, as I asked this question to some passersby. “Is it a man who proposes a toast? Is it a brand of an appliance? Is it something to do with a speech?” Obviously they don’t have an idea of the answer I wanted to get. Yes they may be right, but it disheartened me. Am I not working as Lieutenant Governor for Marketing? Is my effort not enough?

First thing that came to my mind was “I have to reach out!” I have to let eve-rybody know about Toastmasters, I want everybody to be part of this great organization... …I want you to have Toastmasters at your fingertips! The concept of this newsletter was brought about by the effort of bringing Toastmasters to people. We want them to have a one-stop reading material that will introduce Toastmasters to them and at the same time for members to be fully acquainted with Toastmasters. This is just one of the many projects that have been lined up for marketing Toastmasters in District 79.

The movement to market Toastmasters in district 79 is a collaborative effort with the great stewards, the LGM Ambassadors of each country namely: • LGM Ambassador of Bahrain: TM Mohammed Saleem • LGM Ambassador of Jordan: TM Samer Younis • LGM Ambassador of Saudi Arabia: TM Saif A. Sheikh

• LGM Ambassador of UAE: TM Jijie C. Zablan • LGM Ambassador of Qatar: TM Syed Muhamed Yasir Nainar • LGM Ambassador of Kuwait: TM Gerry Collis • LGM ambassador of Oman: TM George Thomas

This will also not be possible without the LGM Team who is working hand in hand with me, these are: • TM Hamza al Ghatam • TM Marwa Mohammed • TM Jeanette Cano

The pursuit of marketing Toastmasters is a big leap towards building District 79 Family and this newsletter and Marketing Workshops may be a tool in attaining this goal. Next time when I go out and ask a passerby, I am hoping that he/ she will answer my question in this way,

Fear. We know it all to well. Fear of flying, fear of dying, fear of spiders,

rats and snakes. Some of our fears are valid. Experiencing fear of death when you stand right at the edge of the roof of the NBB tower is absolutely the right reaction, it protects you. But there are fears that serve no real purpose.

My focus here are the hidden fears, the ones that we aren’t so aware of, the ones we haven’t examined or even admitted to ourselves - the seemingly

insurmountable obstacles that exist only in our imagination; the imaginary hur-dles that prevent us from becoming our true and best selves, keep us from real-izing our greatest goals in life.

The fear of rejection, fear of not-being good enough, fear of becoming poor, fear of not being liked, fear of intimacy – letting our loved ones in on who we really are, sometimes even the fear of getting what we want!… These fears may all sound trivial as I mention them, but

Mind Your FearBy TM Eva Steinhaus

Fearing Paris

Suppose that what you fearcould be trappedand held in Paris.

Then you would havethe courage to go

everywhere in the world.

All the directions of the compassopen to you,

except the degrees east or westof true north

that lead to Paris.

Still, you wouldn't dareput your toes

smack dab on the city limit line.

You're not really willingto stand on a mountainside,

miles away, and watch the Paris lights

come up at night.

Just to be on the safe sideyou decide to stay completely

out of France.

But then the dangerseems too close

even to those boundaries, and you feel

the timid part of youcovering the whole globe again.

You need the kind of friendwho learns your secret and says,

"See Paris First."

they do exist in our minds and affect our actions and behavior.

In one of our recent Toastmaster meet-ings, we spoke about dreams and how important they are to our lives and in reaching our full potential. What good is a dream though, if you let the hurdles of fear hold you up? Again, my point here is, most of these fears operate unrecog-nized. Why is that? Because they have become so entrenched in our lives through the way we were raised, the things we’ve experienced or have seen others experience. These fears are on autopilot, if you will. And as adults, we are not readily willing to admit to them; instead we have developed defense mechanisms. We typically ignore our fears. We allow ourselves to be distract-ed, we avoid making decisions, we treat a situation that is crucial to our dreams with indifference. We go everywhere in the world, except Paris, we even try to avoid France. That may sound very abstract. Let me give you an example:

A few weeks ago, my employer and I decided to go separate ways. My CV was in a reasonably good shape, updating it and getting it out there could have been done in a snap. I sent it out to a couple of places, but wasn’t really happy with it, thought it needed some improvements which would need some time. Around the same time, I had to move out of my place in Amwaj, so I got busy pack-ing boxes… To cut a long story short, defense mechanisms were at work: per-fectionism with my CV and distraction with my move.Around this time, I met with Sylvi, my career advisor and leadership coach.

“What are you afraid of?” she asked me point-blank.

I looked at her: “Me? Afraid?”“What happens when you sit at your desk, writing your CV?”

It didn’t take her long, to get it out of me: the dreadful confession that this application process really feels uncom-fortable. That there’s this quirky little voice in my head that says: “What if you’re not good enough”, “What if you get rejected?” – unreasonable imaginary obstacles!

Sylvi went a bit further, and I warn you, this may sound a little crazy, but it drives home a point.

She asked me to visualize that voice coming from an animal, asked me what that animal would be and if I could give it a name. I looked at her in disbelief. She looked back at me with patience.

“A hedgehog!” my mind suddenly gen-erated out of nowhere, “Barney, the hedgehog!”.

“Ah!” she said, with a satisfied smile on her face. “So there he is, Barney, the little guy that curls up when there is a threat, puts out his spikes and says those things…”

“So, Eva, what do you want to do with Barney, next time he shows up?”

I resisted, “Sylvi this is really getting too far!”

Adamantly, she continued: “Are you going to kick him? Go after him with a knife?”

“No, no”, I responded, “that would be brutal and cruel!”

“So, what are you going to do?”

I laughed, imagining this silly lit-tle creature sitting on my desk, and said: “I’d probably start joking with him. Like this: ‘Hey, look who’s here! Barney, why don’t you find yourself a comfy spot somewhere and go and hibernate? I’ve got to get a few things done here.’ ”

“That’s brilliant!” I heard Sylvi say. And she explained to me, how impor-tant it is to explore our fears with kindness and with humor. At the end of the day, wherever our fears origi-nate from and no matter how silly and unreasonable they may seem, they are part of us whether we like it or not. To go after them in a harsh way, trying to control, trying to force them away is not going to work.

The concern of my speech today are not the specific techniques, whether you go and name animals, but rather wanting you to recognize the fears that drive your decisions and approach them with an open mind. When you lie because of the fear of being rejected, what needs to be addressed - the lie or the fear?

Next time you choose not to do what would actually put you on the road to success, to become your best self, stop and think, examine the reasons for your inaction and explore your fears with kindness. Realize what these fears prevent you from reaching. It is like coming to Paris: not rolling in with a heavy military tank, but rather stepping in with an open mind and heart to explore all the treasures this city has to offer.

Death is not the biggest fear we have;

our biggest fear is taking the risk to be alive,

the risk to be alive and express who we really are.

As our daily life is completely busy and we do not have time to look

at ourselves. I will tell you a few sim-ple things that will at least help you to remain healthy:

1. Try to get up early in the morn-ing. A healthy person should get up at least two hours before sun-rise. It is the most pure and most fresh time of day. Do not get up from your bed in haste. Sit and reflect inwards.

2. Drink two glasses of water which will help to flush your gastro intestinal track and kidneys and things will move quite nicely.

3. Drench your face with cold water. Blink your eyes seven times and rotate them in both directions, side to side, up and down- this will make your eyes strong.

4. While brushing your teeth use a soft brush.

5. Scrape your tongue, which is very important. It sends indirect message to the internal organs and stimulates gastric fiber and digestive enzymes. If you see a thick coating on your tongue it means last evening’s dinner was not digested properly.

6. Then gargle with one tea spoon of sesame oil and then spit and mas-sage your teeth with index fingers to strengthen your teeth and gums.

7. One more important thing to remem-ber is that a nose is the doorway to the brain. Usually we take care of our nose only when we have a

cold. Apply three drops of sesame oil to the finger tips and message inside your nostrils. It will help clean sinuses, improve your voice, vision and mental clarity.

8. Massage your body with sesame oil. Massage your scalp, forehead, hands and legs for not more than 5 minutes. This will help in preventing baldness, graying and headaches and will brighten the skin.

9. Exercise and fitness activities must supplement a healthy diet. Exercise helps to burn calories, relieves ten-sion and also helps tone the mus-cles. Walking swimming are some common ways of staying fit. Yoga including meditation helps you to de-stress and keep your mind calm and peaceful at all times. Simple pra-naymas or yoga breathing will help. Regular exercise helps the body attain poise, grace and good posture and also contributes to a youthful appearance.

10. Alternate nostril breathing:- Yoga breathing exercise where you inhale through one nostril, hold the breath and then exhale that breath out through the other nostril. It will help you if have high blood pressure, heart blockages, sinus, asthma and depression related diseases. Just do it for five minutes.

11. Kapal bhati:- kapal means forehead and bhatti means shining. Five to ten minutes of it will help for obesity, diabetics, kidneys, heart, brain and lungs problems Mediation for fifteen minutes is very important.

12. Your breakfast should be nutritious and wholesome. The breakfast should be light with a minimal quan-

tity of calories and maximum amount of nutrients. Be sure not to skip your breakfast because it is the first meal of your day.

13. Take lunch between twelve noon to one pm. This time period is good for digestion. Since this is the main meal of the day, you need to eat a nutritious lunch with moderate calo-rie intake. After having lunch it is suggested to avoid sleep after lunch. and walk for few minutes, say five minutes which will help digestion.

14. Take dinner around seven pm which is three hours before sleep. After din-ner walk for ten to fifteen minutes. The dinner should be lighter than lunch. It is good to eat steamed or sautéed vegetables, rice with ghee and warm soups. A good desert is cream of rice or wheat with peeled almonds or Indian Halva. Avoid drinking excess water with your meals. Taking a little water is okay but not more than cup as it will slows agni and disturbs digestion. For the same reason coffee and black tea should be avoided after meal. Better choices are digestive herbal tea such as ginger, cinnamon and clove tea.

15. To induce a peaceful life at end of day put coconut oil to your feet for a nice sleep. It will calm your system and your well being. Therefore you should have a sound sleep of six to seven hours.

I think if you will follow the above in your routine and life they will keep you healthy and beautiful.“Remember Health is a door to increase your wealth.”

The opening of

Sakhir is a great addition to Bahrain

and to the Royal Air Force as it owns modern

facilities that can accommodate all types of military and civil aircrafts At an early age I started my life as a pilot flying with (PC-7 ) Pilats and a Helicopter like (Gazelle) Then, due to medical reason, I was grounded. Now I am serving as an Airspace Management Officer in BDF . Really I want to Thank the Toastmasters movement especially Manama Toastmasters Club which lead me to raise up my hand when to participate as a commentator in the Table Topics session. It was my pleasure to partici-pate for the first time as a member in the group of commentators in the first Bahrain International Air Show. As a commentator on the flying aircrafts , I

commented on some military planes such as SU-27 ( Sukoui ) which is a Russian plane and also on Raffle a French plane and some other planes. It was really a great moment to be a

part of Bahrain’s history makers, which we can tell the next generations about these

events. If you are interested in air shows around the world

the next air show will be in Hyderabad, India from 3rd to 7th March 2010. I hope to be there gathering more experiences for our next Bahrain air show. Thank God the Almighty for all that has been achieved in all aspects of life in our pre-cious kingdom during the past ten years and to which we owe our congratula-tions to His Majesty the King and to ourselves.

The opening of Sakhir is a great addi-tion to Bahrain and to the Royal Air Force as it owns modern facilities that can accommodate all types of military and civil aircrafts At an early age I started my life as a pilot flying with (PC-7) Pilats and a Helicopter like (Gazelle) Then, due to medical reason, I was grounded. Now I am serving as an Airspace Management Officer in BDF . Really I want to Thank the Toastmasters movement especially Manama

Toastmasters Club which lead me to raise up my hand when to participate as a commentator in the Table Topics session. It was my pleasure to partici-pate for the first time as a member in the group of commentators in the first Bahrain International Air Show. As a commentator on the flying aircrafts, I commented on some military planes such as SU-27 (Sukoui) which is a Russian plane and also on Raffle a French plane and some other planes. It was really a great moment to be a part of Bahrain’s history makers, which we can tell the next generations about these events. If you are interested in air shows around the world the next air show will be in Hyderabad, India from 3rd to 7th March 2010. I hope to be there gathering more experiences for our next Bahrain air show.

Word of the day

A family is a place where minds come in contact with one another. If these minds love one another, the home will be as beautiful as

a flower garden. But if these minds get out of harmony

with one another it is like a storm that plays havoc with the garden.

In life, all good things come hard, but wisdom is the hardest to come by.

The theme of Meeting no: 2267 which held on 23rd January 2010 was Wisdom.

The master of ceremonies TM Thuraya Juma posted a question to our fellow Toastmasters regarding their opinions on the wisdom in life. Their reply was the following

• DTM Khalid AlQoud (The president): My wisdom is this: there are no

gains without pains.

• TM Neelesh Man Singh Pradhan (VP Membership): Wisdom for me means love and knowledge.

• TM Osama Bahar (VP Public Relation): I learnt in my life two things: First, do

not tell everything you know. Second, be kind and nice whatever, wherever, however you been through.

• TM Mona Ali (Librarian) Treat people the way you want to be

treated and if talk is silver, silence is gold. Life is full of wisdom and each

one of us should have wisdom to fol-low and I think they are really works.

• TM Mariam Jacob: To me Wisdom came from the mis-

takes I made in life. Life is the most learning experience for anyone. Do not worry about mistakes. That's the time you learn!!

• TM Abdulla Zuwayed: My Wisdom: Treat people like you

would like to be treated and consult with the experts before you attempt new projects.

• TM Sohail Niazi: Wisdom means saying and doing the

right thing at the right time.

• TM Bharat Patil: For me wisdom is the proper use of

a mind to tackle difficult situations in life.

• TM Claire Cosgrove What is wisdom - keeping one's

mouth closed till one has under-stood the situation then speak care-fully, sensitively and minimally.

• TM Hussain Eid: Wisdom in life: LIFE'S SHORT.

If you don't look around once in a while you might miss it. Life teaches me about wisdom: that everything in our life runs in a cycle that ends up with what has been predetermined for us from God, however people’s satisfac-tion is an intent that can't be per-ceived.

• TM Khalid Ghuzlani: My wisdom in life is about putting

things into perspective, reminding ourselves that ultimately we are insignificant in the infinity of the universe, and that our presence on this earth, just like the one of our ancestors is temporary. Ultimately, wisdom is about "enjoying the ride" while being able to stomach the ups and downs of life and leaving a footprint of respect, love and con-sideration for others.

• TM Zahra Hubail: The biggest wisdom in this life is

to get and own the satisfaction of three: God, Yourself and people.

My role here, tonight, you heard …isTo pay attention to your speech,

To count all utt’rance that’s in breachOf proper presentation rules.

Listening caref’ly for each word …thatHas no purpose, nor adds meaning.Pauses, too, are under screening:Are they gaps? Or skillful tools?

“Speech disfluencies” they are named …byThose of linguistic expertise,Or just “irregularities”In the way it’s put across.

Frequently, when we’re ashamed …orIn our minds thoughts go astray,Planning for what next to say,And for words we’re at a loss.

We all fully understand ...theChallenge that you have on hand.Try, refrain though, would you pleaseFrom the use of words like these:“Umm” and “ah”, “you see” and “so…”“What d’you call it”, “like”, “you know”.Even native ones, beware -“Yaani…”, “matlab” are not fair.

Further, let me point it out, …thatDoubled phrases - repetitionAlso raises my suspicion.Lastly, and that matters most:

Do have fun, without a doubt, …withSpeech, feedback, increasing skillAnd confidence. And soon you willBecome a Master of the Toast!
