Page 2: jan2012

December was a up and down month where you had to pick your day to go fishing, due to hot weather and rain, leaving everything hot and humid so mostly the river was the go. There were a few really good days that allowed the outside fishermen to get out there, with flat seas and some excellent fishing to be had.

The rivers and creeks produced a mixed bag

with good Whiting and nice sized Bream still about, bait of choice was plastic worm and yabbies plus, prawn pieces, “yes” it does work just buy fresh green prawns, peel and chop pieces off.

This hot weather has brought the Mangrove Jack on the bite; some absolute beauties have been landed. Amanda went fishing up near Sharkies in the Elliot and using sprat as bait, pulled in about five, one went to 50cm. Some Grunter are also about, mostly in the deep holes, with some huge ones being landed mostly on sprat and white bait.

Whiting were caught in the early part of the month, up to about the third week, just outside the mouth of the rivers, follow the dirty water out and then just north for a few hundred meters. Flathead

are still being caught in all rivers, as they are breeding and laying eggs up the tops of the rivers and they will still be in good numbers till March when they start to travel back down the river to the mouths and outside. Good sizes will be caught in April/March but will be a bit skinny.

Outside, things have been hit and miss some have got their quota whilst others have come back empty handed. Red Emperor, Black King, Sweetlip, and Cod have been caught at the wreck off the mouth of the Baffle and is producing good fun on light gear, with Trevally in all sizes hitting the slugs and spinners. I am told the bait that has been producing this month outside has been small squid. Floating pilchard on a weighted two meter leader with a balloon float has seen some terrific Mackerel pulled on board and not too far off shore.

The dams are starting to pick up but Barra sizes are still on the smaller side with just a few good Barra hitting the lures, the old favourite Gold Bomber has produced some good fish. Bushy and Sterlo’s Sqwidges have also been nailing a few in the greens and browns and white three to five inch have been the go.

The bass in the Gregory, Monduran and most other dams are starting to fire up with catches of up to 50cm being landed. Your favourite spinner should do the job here as they are in a good feeding mood early morning and late afternoon. Be on the water at 5am and try small poppers for a change as the bigger bass are hitting these like road trains.

If you got a new cast net for Christmas and having trouble throwing it email me at: [email protected] and I will send you a video that I have found to be the best and easiest way to cast a net.

The next meeting and weigh-in of the Bundaberg Sports Fishing Club is at 4pm on January 8, at Burnett Heads Community Hall, Zunker Street, everybody is welcome.

The construction of a fishway designed to increase stocks of fish in the Burnett River was completed last month.

The fishway has been constructed on Bundaberg Creek at Baldwin Swamp through a joint project between Bundaberg Regional Council, Ocean Watch and the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation.

The completion of the $104,000 fishway is regarded as important for environmental ecology as well as the local seafood industry by providing fish with access to vital habitats for breeding and feeding.

Council’s spokesperson for Natural Resource Management Councillor Danny Rowleson said many fish species require brackish water and freshwater for feeding and for seasonal breeding behaviour.

“It has been recognised the Burnett River

has been significantly compromised by multiple barrages and weirs that inhibit and disrupt fish passage through the catchment,” Councillor Rowleson said.

“The barrage on Bundaberg Creek, in Baldwin Swamp, has been identified as a significant barrier which is why council was keen to help build the fishway,” he added.

Health and Environmental Services spokesperson Councillor Mary Wilkinson said the fishway has been created to resemble a creek and pond system as similar as possible to a natural stream environment.

“The project will greatly improve the habitats in which fish breed and ultimately increase the number of Barramundi, Mangrove Jack and Sea Mullet in the region’s fishing grounds,” she said.

Councillor Wilkinson said council’s involvement in the project involved in-kind assistance to the value of $15,000.

Quality Water Systems

IS YOUR WATER SAFE TO DRINK?Did you know that your body is made

up of approximately 70% water, which must be replaced every five to ten days? With this in mind, we are supposed to drink at least two litres of water per day. Is the water you are drinking safe enough to replenish your body?

Water is crucial in helping your body to:• Regulate our temperature• Dissolves the body’s waste products• Flush out toxins.

It makes sense that the quality of our drinking water can radically affect our health and performance.

The best water to drink is pure water. Pure water, by definition, is two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen, nothing else.

Pure water should contain no foreign particles, chemicals, minerals, bacteria or other contaminants. Water should be odourless, tasteless and colourless. If not, it is contaminated!

The water which comes from our taps can contain:

You may find water which has been purified to some extent, but the real question should be “To what extent?” Nowadays, “high purity of water” is virtually impossible to find anywhere on the planet.

So what’s the answer you may ask? The answer is simple! For pure, safe drinking and cooking water you need to filter the water that comes from your taps.

For expert advice on how to improve your water, contact Ron at Quality Water Systems. With more than 20 years’ experience in water treatment and filtration, Ron will have the solution to ensure you are drinking and cooking with the best water possible.

How much is peace of mind really costing you?

With the increase of Funeral Insurance advertising, it seems every second advert on the television lately is about another insurance company selling Funeral Insurance. All want to get your money but have really investigated what you are getting?

Like any financial advice it is always a good idea to investigate what you are really being offered and whether it really suits you or if it only suits your insurers pockets.

As an example, a person who is 60 year old can pay up to $80,000 more than is required over the rest of their life.

Some consideration should be given to your investment including whether an Insurance or a Bond is better for you and how much you will need to plan for based on what you want from your funeral service. Like a Will, planning now will help your family in knowing what you want.

Your investment should be tax effective and both Centrelink and

DVA pension friendly. Your funeral benefit should also allow your family quick and easy access when it is required.

Your peace of mind should not cost you more than it needs to. It is important to seek the right advice from the right funeral director.

ELECTRICAL AND DATA

Enjoy smart living with home automationHaymans Electrical and Data Suppliers, in association with Local Registered

Installers, can make your house a smart home, providing an enhanced lifestyle of entertainment, convenience, comfort and security, with Home Automation.

Home Automation, also known as Home Integration or Smart Home Solutions, is about combining things together within the home electrical system.

Home Automation is revolutionising home security and entertainment. If you’re building a new home, installing home automation infrastructure will get you ready for the future and add value to your home.

Imagine coming home, you press your garage door remote button, the door lifts up and lights come on in the garage, up the hallway and into the kitchen. The door between the garage and house could automatically unlatch and the security could be programmed to disarm. As you walk up the hallway, music could start playing through the ceiling mounted speakers.

When you come into the kitchen you could go to your wall mounted touchscreen and activate the radio to come through the kitchen speakers. You could then go to another section of the touchscreen, and set the lighting levels and even turn on the air-conditioning.

You then sit down in the lounge and pick up your portable touchscreen remote control and press the button that says “Watch a Movie” . The Plasma turns on, the amplifier turns on and goes straight to the DVD input, the plasma switches to the correct AV input, The DVD player turns on and is ready for you to insert your movie.

After your movie it’s time for bed. As you leave the area you press “Goodnight” on your wall mounted touchscreen and the lights start to turn off one area at a time but leaving a path of light to your bedroom. It also activates the alarm to be armed in the downstairs area and activates all of the electric locks on doors.

If you are away from home, deter would-be burglars by giving your home the lived in look. Lights can be turned on and off at set or variable times, open curtains during the day and closing them at night, all to a set or variable schedule.

If you hear a strange noise at night hit the Pre Programmed Panic Button, all external and interior lights will be turned on to maximum brightness in a flash.

This is just some of the many scenarios that can be set up and programmed into a home automation system to not only enhance your home and lifestyle but also to increase your sense of security.

To find out more about home automation visit the experienced staff at Haymans Electrical and Data Suppliers at 26 Burrum Street, Bundaberg. The staff can help in determining the features that you need, put you in touch with Local Registered Installers and draw up a plan to suit your budget and lifestyle.

Control your lighting and electrical appliances with Clipsal C-Bus.

Game Console Solutions

Repairs, Sales & Accessories For All Game Consoles, iPhones, iPods & iPads

14

Did you know the most common problem with game consoles is overheating especially in summer months? Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles are the two most common video game systems to suffer from overheating issues. It’s not the actual components that suffer but the solder that attaches them to the motherboard, which is commonly known as a dry solder joint where the solder starts to fracture and lose connection to the motherboard.

So, what’s the best way to prevent this problem from happening? What we suggest is to keep your console ventilated, never place it in an enclosed cabinet or block any of its side vents. Every now and then use a vacuum cleaner to suck the dust around the vent holes, this will keep your console cool and prolong the life of your gaming system. But if you are one of the many gamers that have surcome to the dreaded RROD or E74 errors on Xbox 360 and YLOD error on PlayStation 3 console then that’s where we can help.

With our rework station we can reflow the solder back to the motherboard or in some cases we just replace the chip and get you back playing once again.

But with the new release of the Xbox 360 slim and PlayStation 3 slim Microsoft and Sony have resolved these issue with a much better cooling system, although we have seen a few PS3 Slim consoles with the yellow light of death ( YLOD ) but not as common.

We also repair portable gaming system like Nintendo DS series to PlayStation Portable consoles we keep a wide range of parts like LCD screens to batteries and motherboards and all parts are in stock at all times so there are no waiting periods and most cases repairs are done in 24 hours.

We just don’t specialise in gaming console but we also repair iPods and iPhones and even iPad’s

Cracked screens are no problem as we always keep screens in stock at all times and can be repaired the same day it was dropped off. No matter what problem you have with your iPhone I am sure we will have the solution for you.

This is the best time to get your faulty game console or iPhone repaired as a massive price drop on parts has enabled us to keep the prices down on all our repairs.

With over 25 years experience in this field you can rest assured that your game console and iPhone will be in good hands at Game Console Solutions.

Naturopathic Information by Rebecca Lang ND BHSc (Comp Med)Firstly, I hope that everybody

had a happy and healthy Christmas break. Now we have entered into 2012, what were your main three New Year’s Resolutions (write them below)?MY NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS ARE:1.2.3.

I would be interested to know how many involved health and fitness. Many of us start off the year with good intentions to lose weight, eat healthier, start that exercise plan etc. Well, 2012 can be the year you actually make it happen!

January is a good time to detox. A three week plan under the supervision of a qualified Naturopath would be ideal and a great way to kick start any weight loss plan. The other option is to work with your diet and reduce tea, coffee, caffeinated drinks, alcohol, soft drinks, sugar free soft drinks (which are often just as bad based on studies), fried and fatty food, sugar, packet food etc.

Then increase whole foods. Whole foods are the cheaper ones in the grocery store that have no GST. Lean protein (red meat, chicken and fish), fresh fruit and vegetables, lentils, chickpeas etc. and increasing water and herbal teas.

The skin is the biggest organ

in the body so it is important to support the skin in the removal of toxins. Dry skin brushing from the feet towards the heart will assist with not only clearing out toxins from the skin but also from the lymphatic system. Dry skin brushes, with the light bristles, can be bought from Woolworths or a Pharmacy, but a rough towel would also assist. Epsom salt baths will also be helpful during your detox time. Gentle exercise would be suitable and Milk Thistle is the most effective herb to support you during this time. The above process is supporting Phase I of detoxification, speak to your Naturopath about supporting Phase II of detoxification which is essential for a variety of issues, including hormone imbalances.

Vegetable juices are the most suitable food/drink item to be supporting you, not only during your detox time, but for the rest of your life. A basic vegetable juicer costs around $100 from Kmart or BigW. Vegetable juices will assist in alkalising the body, provide you with live digestive enzymes and live minerals to support your health and well-being, and greatly increase your energy. A good combination is fresh carrots, celery, beetroot (to support the liver), small amount of ginger and ¼ of a lemon. Lemon is the only fruit you should add to your juices. These

vegetable juices will also reduce pain in the body by reducing acid. Don’t waste the fibre that comes out. Put it in a freezer bag and freeze it for when you make soups or stews. If you can’t afford to buy a juicer yet, go to one of the juice shops in town and spoil yourself by asking for one with all of their vegetables and a quarter of a lemon. Fruits are not suitable to be juiced on a regular basis. It is best to eat fruit with the fibre as fruit is high in natural sugars.

Now that we have you detoxed and glowing, look out for the next issue which will be on weight loss.

In2solar would like to introduce you to their newest product to hit the market

SolaKool Hybrid Air-Conditioners - Government Approved with Star Ratings

18

These units have the ability to both cool and heat your home throughout the year without the HUGE running costs. The benefits of SolaKool air-conditioners include:• Direct sunlight is NOT required• Depending on normal operating conditions savings of up to 80% may be achieved over a conventional system• The system operates for up to 15 hours over night after only 4 hours exposure to daylight• Efficiencies are maintained even when temperatures are extreme

If you are considering installing or even upgrading your current air-conditioning systems at home or in the office here are some commonly asked questions:Can the SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioning unit be installed by a do-it-yourself?

Only a qualified tradesman holding a SOLAKOOL Installation Certificate may install the SOLAKOOL Solar air-conditioning system. This is to ensure that the installation is as per the installation manual and to qualify for the warranty. In2Solar has qualified tradesmen who are accredited to install your SOLAKOOL system. How does the SOLAKOOL solar air-con work at night and in cloudy weather?

The SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioner works day and night and in rainy or cloudy weather. The solar panel will absorb and store solar thermal energy during the day. It only requires 4-5 hours of sunlight for 15 hours continuous operation. Is the SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioner 100% solar?

NO. It still requires electric power to operate the

compressor and the fans. However, combine the SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioner with the SOLAKOOL solar thermal power system and you have a complete solar system.Warranty time and after sales service?

The warranty time for SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioners is 5 years and the designed service life is 30 years. Most components are readily available locally; however, they are covered by the warranty in the warranty period. Does the solar collector need any special maintenance?

NO special maintenance is required once installed. What is the difference between an inverter air-conditioner and a solar air-conditioner?

Inverter technology enables the air-conditioner to operate at the most efficient compressor and fan speed when below full power. At full power it has no advantage over conventional air-conditioner. Typically, an inverter will save up to 15% of the electricity required to operate EXCEPT when it is on full power.

A SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioner will save up to 80% over a conventional air-conditioning system and eliminate the high air conditioning demand at peak times.

In2Solar is owned and operated by local tradesmen giving you a professional service from sale to install. If you want to talk about any of your solar requirements, either residential or commercial, give Ian and Trent a call on 1300 13 20 46.

Tech Talk & TipsIf you have just got back from

Christmas holidays and your computer will not switch on, don’t despair there could be a number of reasons for it. First, when you go away for a period of time, always unplug all your electrical equipment from the wall, especially round this time of year due to the storms, which bring lightning. Also unplug your telephone connection to your internet, lightning will, and has, used this form of outlet many times. Having done this your computer should be pretty safe.

If you left your computer switched off, but still plugged into the electrical socket on the wall, your power supply can and does build up an electrical charge and sometimes overload. To fix this unplug your computer from the wall and press the start button slowly “on” and “off” about five or six times, plug your computer back into the wall and switch on.

Computers need to be looked after, they are built and designed to be kept cool, fans suck air into the vital areas and then out, this air carries dust and if you live on the coast you have the added problem of salt in the air. This time of the year there is a lot of moisture in the air, the moisture is absorbed by the dust etc. which has settled in your computer, over eight months to a year, and this will cause problems. To avoid this you should have your computer “cleaned and serviced” every six to eight months. This can save you money and stop you from

losing valuable information or photos etc. AMS Computers are brilliant at this and their clean and service is good value for money (see bottom of page), they clean out the volumes of dust, take out all the parts, clean all the terminals and connections and fans, replace everything and then after starting it back up they take out all the items which have built up over the months such as the start engines that install themselves every time you go to an internet site, which start up each time you switch on your computer. This is why your computer tends to get slower and slower. Once your computer has been cleaned and serviced it will be faster and the life of your computer will be prolonged.

This service is offered at a special price of $45 (does not include repairs) and for all pensioners, AMS Computers give a 10% discount on labour for all your other repairs. AMS Computer Services back up their product with a five year limited warranty, no waiting as all warranty work is done as soon as possible in the store. As they say, it’s locals looking after locals with great service.

With all the scams around DO NOT open an email from anybody you do not know and definitely do not reply. The other very important thing you must not do is give anybody the information to access your computer. Every day I speak to someone who has let people into their computer set up and this

has cost them big money. Beware, if you don’t know them, don’t trust them. If an unwanted email finds its way to your inbox, go to the top toolbar, click on message, scroll down to block sender and click on that, then click OK, this should then get rid of them and give you peace of mind.

For all the people out there struggling with this new technology especially the older generation, the best tip I can give you is get yourselves down to U3A, it’s at the rear of Blockbuster Video and the Library, there you will meet new friends who are just like you, have a good time and most importantly learn quickly the magic that is computing.

AMS Computer services would like to say thanks to all the customers that have become friends and for all the cards and presents they have received this past festive season, 2011 was a very busy year especially the last three months or more which kept its five technicians on their toes. It was especially satisfying for the friendly office staff to know that they are appreciated by you the customer, so from all at AMS Computer services, have a great and healthy 2012.

If you have computer problems of any description send an email to: [email protected] and with the assistance of the AMS technician team who have more than 65 years experience between them, we will endeavour to help you.

Make your outdoor living area a cool inviting place to relax and enjoy your spare time. The use of tropical plants such as gingers, palms, cordylines and bromeliads give a good effect. The larger leaf creates plenty of shading and a good atmosphere.

A bit of information on palms to select. The most popular is the Alexander Palm which is self cleaning so there is no need to climb ladders to cut off unwanted palms fronds. It has a beautiful green shaft and very appealing green fronds. Alexander palms can be singularly planted or multi planted. When planting multiples together they will generally not grow as tall and will create more screening. Alexander Palms are an Australian native palm naturally occurring in sheltered gullies where they can grow to 15m or more. Yet most of us grow Alexander Palms in the full sun in rather exposed conditions where they may grow only around the 4 to 6m height. Add plenty of fertilizer and water in these warmer months and you can achieve some height very quickly.

The Bangalow or Picabeen Palm is often confused with the Alexander. Bangalow has a much thinner trunk and can grow taller. The Cascade Palm is one to use if you already have a bit of shade. However it will tolerate a bit of

morning sun. Generally grows around 2 metres, multi trunked and fantastic for filling a corner with lush green. Come and see the Rhapis and Parlour Palms. They are in excellent condition and quality. Just drop by and we can give you a hand.

Outdoor areas always work well if you put in a feature to create a WOW factor. A birdbath, water feature or even a showy pot or two can do the trick. Just arrived at Bundaberg Wholesale Palms is a new range of features. One of which is a showy urn on a pedestal, just add a fountain pump and the WOW factor is yours. There are also lots of birdbaths with class, benches and statues galore from humorous to elegant.

Courtyard troughs are another way to add to your outdoor area just to create an area of interest. Gingers and Heliconias can look good in a large trough. Come and see us as there is lots of specials running for January or until stock runs out. Let us give you a hand.

Enjoy the Cool for Summer

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Line a 25x30cm swiss roll pan with baking paper,
