Jan’s Sunshine, Rainbows and Dreams...June gloom doesn’t mean that we can’t make our own sunshine! In this newsletter is the first of the new Block of the Month blocks. I made mine and it was so much fun. Just choosing the fabrics was like shopping for a new, funky outfit – but not having to wear it.

Our speaker this month is talking about how hip it is to be square. Even though I’ve always known that, my sister who also teaches the Square in a Square method, tells me I can put out quilts with perfect points much more easily than with the method I currently use. Sounds hip to me! And this could make my dream of a “perfectly” made quilt come closer to reality.

Get out of the gloom and join us at our meeting on Tuesday, June 12.

We Lose Judy, Gain Vickie!Judy Dunlap is moving to Baltimore, Maryland as her husband has taken a job there. With her leaving, the office of First Vice-President of Programs opened up. Following the by-laws, at the May 15 Board meeting, Vickie Janis’s name was

submitted with her approval, and the Board voted to appoint her. Linda Rigdon will take her place doing Show & Tell.

Vickie is the fifth of five children, born in South Central Los Angeles in the 50s, grew up in Diamond Bar, and married 'the coolest guy in the world' in 1975. They have three amazing kids, four grand babies and a dog named Hobie. Vickie worked for 18 years at Stewart Surfboards in San Clemente as office manager and retired last September. She now has more time to play with the grand kids and to quilt.

Congratulations, Vickie, on becoming SQG’s fourth Program Chairman.

June Workshop with Jan Steffen: Square in a Square TechniqueWEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 2012 ✦ 10 AM TO 4 PM ✦ $35.00 + RULERFAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 34381 CALLE PORTOLA, CAPISTRANO BEACH

Constellation Workshop: Make beautiful quilts using the Square in a Square ruler with a rotary cutter and strip piecing. Jan Steffen’s class will teach you two options, the easiest to learn. These become the basis for the SIAS techniques. Never cut and sew another triangle again!

July Workshop with Helen Young Frost: Beautiful BindingsWEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 2012 ✦ 10 AM TO 4 PM ✦ $35.00 + KITFAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 34381 CALLE PORTOLA, CAPISTRANO BEACH

Achieve smooth bindings with perfect corners and learn a great method for joining the ends. Practice sewing angled and scalloped edges and try new “gourmet” bindings, such as two-color and faux piping. You will bind small pieces of pre-quilted fabrics to put in a “binding binder,” a portfolio of sample bindings that you can refer to again and again. There is a kit fee of $5.00 payable to the Instructor at the Workshop.

The July Workshop is full at this time but names are being put on a waiting list.

Monthly Mini for JuneTitle:  "Friend with Chocolate"Maker/Quilter:  Judy YamazakiDimension:  12 1/2"  x  11 1/2" Hand appliqued, hand embroidered, and hand quilted by Judy Yamazaki of Osaka, Japan in 2011. Judy gave

this to Surfside to help raise funds and hopes to visit some time. She lived in the U.S. for many years and took quilting classes from Suzanne Stanton. She returned to Japan to care for her elderly Mother. Judy teaches quilting and the tea ceremony in Japan.

The lucky winner of the swirl table runner made by Janet Shannon, was Nancy Bloyer. Surfside raised $76 in ticket sales.

Sunshine and ShadowsThis month Sunshine and Shadows sent a card to Carole Bassett to welcome her first great-granddaughter Zoey Marie. A card was also sent to Mary Mulcahey on the birth of her granddaughter Ila Rose.

Cards were mailed to Sally Edwards after her husband’s fall and another when she moved to the facility next to her husband’s recovery center. A card was also sent to Carolyn Dunham when her husband fell. Sympathy cards were sent to Jhone Hardesty on the loss of her mother, Hiroko Moriwaki on the loss of her mother-in-law, Candy Martin on the death of her husband Terry and Joyce Conyers on the loss of her close friend, Glenda Razor who was also a Guild member. A get well card had been sent to Glenda before she passed.

Please remember to wear your name tag at every meeting. Welcome new members who are wearing pink name tags and visitors who have the white name tags. Let’s show everyone how friendly we are.

Mary Freedman is our Shining Star…Mary Freedman was honored at the May Guild meeting with a surprise Shining Star quilt. Mary’s support has touched us in so many ways, often done anonymously.  Her contributions to the Fest, the website, Monthly Mini, Philanthropy committees, plus use of her sewing room, and the housing and feeding of our speakers, have enriched us all. Past Presidents Nancy Ota, Sharon Whelan, and Joann Bishop presented Mary with a bouquet

of flowers and a quilt of stars made by the outgoing Board and members of Philanthropy and Wounded Warrior committees.

Mary is our Shining Star with busy hands and a very big heart.

Joann Loves Her House QuiltThank you to the Guild for my beautiful President’s Quilt. Each time I pass by it I am overwhelmed at the detail, creativity, and effort it took to make this joyful treasure. Each house block is so unique and fun to look at and I love having your signed blocks as reminders of our members this past year.  The awesome Surfside Quilters Guild logo is stitched to perfection. The back-art is wonderful. This one-of-a kind gift will have a special place in my sewing room where I’ll enjoy displaying it on a special wall.

Special thanks go to Past President Sharon Whelan for planning this lovely quilt (the second one Sharon has organized!). It is a huge undertaking and know it took many hours to produce this gorgeous quilt. It is a constant reminder of the friendships, generosity, and love that that come from our Guild. I enjoyed my year as President and dearly thank my supportive Board, all the volunteers, and each member who makes Surfside the outstanding Guild it is. It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as President for 2011-2012.

President's Quilt Those of us who were at the May Guild meeting were treated to the presentation of the President's Quilt to our outgoing SQG President, Joann Bishop. Many loving hours went into making Joann's quilt such a special gift. Thank you to each member who created a house block and to the many who enthusiastically joined in every aspect of putting together Joann’s quilt.

It was fun participating in every step along the way and I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm and help on this outstanding effort. Thank you so much!

Meet the Board Show & Tell

Sue Troise: I found a pink and white Drunkard’s Path quilt top in the dusty corner of an antique store about 20 years ago. It was beautifully hand pieced, in excellent condition, and was only $30.00. I hand quilted it and use it as a reading quilt.

Wendy McCalley (above): [This Stars ‘n Scraps quilt] was such fun to make – it goes on the wall on Memorial Day so announces summer – and stays up through patriotic holidays. It was my first machine quilting that I liked.

Jan Hirth (left) showed the tulip she painted in Velda Newman’s workshop last month, starting with plain white fabric. She hand appliqued and hand quilted the flower onto the background.

Linda Rigdon (above): [This is] my first quilt, a Jewel Box.  At the first Beach Cities Quilt Guild Christmas "tag sale," I bought a "scrap bag" of fabric donated by Jan Hirth (my quilting hero). This started my "stash" and I have used most of it, always feeling that if Jan used it, I could use it with confidence!

Show & TellWe missed seeing your quilt treasures in May so are looking forward to a large show in June. We would especially like to showcase quilts that celebrate our national holidays as the meeting is smack-dab between Memorial Day and the 4th of July. See you at the Show and Tell Table.

Meet the Board Show & Tell

Hiroko Moriwaki (left): I showed the quilt I made for my son in 2000. The title is “The Year of the Dragon” and he was born in the year of the dragon. The characters around the dragon represent 12 animal zodiacs. This quilt was a surprise for my son. He drew the dragon for the label. 2012 is the year of the dragon!

Marjie Butterworth (above): This is the final product from Patricia Beavers "crayon" quilt workshop. Just draw a design on muslin and get to work with your color crayons, then iron set before putting squares together. Lots of fun.

As Phyllis Parente (left) and Betty Collins show “An Apple A Day,” Maggie Bell (right) tells us: My newest favorite quilted wall hanging is “An Apple a Day.” The pattern, designed by Jackie Robinson of Eureka, Montana, was right inside the door of Country Cloth Fabric Shop in Angels Camp when I was there last month. Seeing a sample on the wall added to my inspiration to make one for myself. It was a very enjoyable project to work on, and the major lesson I learned was that my quarter inch foot isn’t exactly accurate. Thank goodness for seam rippers.

Monica Shafer (above): My quilt is from a Lyn Mann workshop called There Are No Ugly Fabrics, where you make Birds In The Air blocks. My quilt is titled A Little Bird Told Me because of the blocks and because a little bird told me there really are ugly fabrics...so I took them out.

Victoria Crayne, Magazine sales, and Molly Crayne Gardner, made for Megan Crayne Beal, Fall 2011: This is the first quilt Molly made (with Grandma’s help) as a gift to her sister Megan when she left for college. Both sisters went to Sea World Camp and helped take care of the baby turtles.

Meet the Board Show & Tell

Peggy Linton (left): I always wanted to Baltimore Quilt and thought that cut and pieced would be easier than appliqué. Wrong! It’s not forgiving. It went to Road to California and got Viewer’s Choice and Committee’s Choice for show.

Penny Soldin: My favorite quilt is one I made of a golfer, using my husband's face and clothing! It was fun to make, even though it took awhile to finish. I gave it to him for our 30th anniversary, and he still brags about it!

Julie Vlahos (above): My red and pink "One Block Wonder" is one of my favorite quilts. I do love a challenge and as much of a challenge the boxes were, so was the choice of fabric. It took much deliberation before making the final decision.

Stashbusters Workshop for PhilanthropyThe next meeting will be June 20 from 10 to 3 at the SC Presbyterian Church. Everyone is welcome and you don't have to stay the whole time. Please bring a sack lunch.

✦ We met at Mary Freedman’s home this month to help work on a project started by the 2011-2012 group. Over 100 packages containing pieces to make a nine-patch square were passed out to the member-ship at the May monthly general meeting. We hope everyone will return these kits, completed, to Stashbusters at our June Guild meeting, giving us a great head start on twin bed quilts for our Gilchrist Nursing Home project.

✦ Our very colorful heart-shaped pillows have been thankfully accepted by CHOC at Mission Hospital and will be delivered this week.

✦ We will be constructing a project board out of a flannel-backed table cloth and a spring bar which will hang between two open doors to our supply room when it is being used.

✦ We now have two ironing boards and one iron

for our monthly Stashbusters meetings. We still need large quilt cutting boards if anyone has any to donate.

✦ Nine finished quilts of various sizes were donated by Guild members to Philanthropy at the May meeting and will find homes soon.

✦ Please stop by our table at the June meeting and pick up one or more various items to be completed. This would help Philanthropy greatly.

Introducing…Katy LillieWatching “Georgia B” on PBS 28 years ago, Katy was inspired to give quilting a try. She started to make a quilt for her daughter, but with two babies, it was slow going. By the time she again had time to work on it, Katy’s daughter was old enough to talk and let her know in no uncertain terms that she hated pink - and flowers! So, her first quilt attempt was given away to a grandmother in her church to finish for her granddaughter. About 10 years ago, she renewed her interest in quilting and purchased a Pfaff sewing machine. A native of Southern California, Katy was born in South Pasadena and moved to San Clemente in 1974. She lived briefly in Wichita Falls, Texas, but begged

her then new husband to move back to California; he loved her enough to do so, and they now live in San Juan Capistrano. She and her husband have been married 33 years to date, and together they have raised three children. Katy worked at Capistrano Valley Christian School when her children attended there, and later she worked as a bookkeeper at a local gun shop.

Katy loves working with pre-cut fabrics (so much easier than picking out all the fabric herself), mini-quilts, and lap-size throws. Currently she is learning to work with wool with teacher Kris Kouzelos. Also, she has renewed her interest in knitting and is making socks for her husband – this is do-able only if she pays close attention! Other interests include reading mysteries and fiction, especially historical fiction, traveling, and walking on the beach in the rain.

Thank you to Helene Moser, Jeanne Tavasci, Bette Bradley, and Betty Collins for helping at the Membership Table. They would be happy to help you purchase quilt pins for $5.

Membership renewals for 2012-2013 continue in June. To be included in our printed Directory you must renew by the June 12th meeting. Please print up the Membership Form found on page 9, fill it out and bring it to the June meeting with a check for $30 made out to Surfside Quilters Guild or SQG. We are requiring every member to fill out a new form, even if all of your information is still the same so our Directory will be as up to date as possible. If you can't attend the June meeting, you may mail your renewal form and check to: Surfside Quilters Guild, PO Box 3295, San Clemente, CA 92674.

Also, please take the time to review the Volunteer Opportunities Form on page 10. Get to know your fellow Guild members by volunteering for an area of interest to you. An indication of interest is not an endless commitment. Your participation is encouraged and essential to the success of this Guild.

Please make an appointment with Del Thomas to have your picture taken for the Website and the printed Directory. If you don't like your current photo, Del can take another.

Wounded WarriorThe second year of the Wounded Warrior program is off to a great start thanks to Nancy Burch who donated eight quilts she made this month. We were able to make a new contact in Bastion and the quilts are on their way along with some packages of Oreo cookies. It seems that our Wounded Warriors love Oreos and nestling them inside our quilts provides the opportunity to send them without breaking.

We would like to thank Joann Bishop, Jan Bogikes, Nancy Bloyer, Barbara Christensen, Mary Freedman, Margo Grube, Mimi Harris, Vickie Janis, Michelle Lincoln, Charlotte Spere, and Jeanne Tavasci for making blocks, quilt tops, or donations this month.

There have been a couple of changes in our meeting dates. We now meet on the first Tuesday of each month (June 5th) at Mary Freedman’s home from 10 am to 3 pm and/or the third Wednesday (June 20th) at the San Clemente Presbyterian Church. We hope that you will find time to join us. If you prefer to sew at home, we will have kits to make blocks at the Wounded Warrior Table at the Guild meeting, or you’re welcome to do your own thing. Just remember these quilts are for

very special people and there are some criteria.

FABRIC: 100% Cotton BATTING: 80/20 FINISHED QUILT SIZE: 48" x 78" COLOR (if turning in individual blocks): Must be a combination of red, white and/or blue only. Complete quilts or quilt tops may be other colors as long as you use good taste.

For the Wounded Warrior Block of the Month instructions and diagrams, see page 15.

Thank you for your support of Wounded Warriors who have given up so much so we can enjoy our daily freedoms.

Busy Bear Opportunity QuiltOur 2012 Opportunity Quilt “Big Bear Bounty” depicts the beautiful bounty of mother nature in Big Bear. The pattern is an adaption of “Mt. Diablo” by Valarie Sauban Chapla.  The drawing will be at our annual Quilt Show, Labor Day weekend, September 1 & 2. Tickets for your chance to win this beautiful quilt are $1 or $5 for six. The show is a great opportunity to visit Big Bear, enjoy the show and the rest of the area. If you would like more information about the weekend and lodging, contact Lorraine Taylor at 909-866-8081  [email protected].

Block of the MonthJudy Lawry, Odette Osantowski and I are having fun creating the monthly blocks. We begin with our Piece Maker Lady. Freddy Moran has given us permission to create our own pattern from her Garden Party Lady. Thanks to my good friend Ellie Rapp who was a huge help with this block.

Piece Maker will be our center "medallion" and we plan to surround her with sewing notions. Instructions, diagrams and templates follow on the next two pages. Also, each month you will also have access to a tutorial in the form of a Picasa album. Just click on the link (below) for step by step photos and comments. Click on an individual photo and you will get a larger image and the full comment.

Links to instruction and template downloads and a tutorial will be on our website also: http://www.surfsidequiltersguild.org/BlockoftheMonth/2012.aspx.

TUTORIAL LINK: Click on the photo for a larger view and the comment: https://picasaweb.google.com/surfsidequiltersguild/PieceMakerBOMJune?authkey=Gv1sRgCNTB8oj0qZ-hIA

Please join us each month. If you email (Nancy) a photo of your block, I will add it to the Picasa album.  Remember, there will be a drawing in June of 2013 for $100. The winner must have a quilt top using at least one block from each month. You may add other blocks.

Come by and tell us how you are doing each month at Guild.
