Europeana and PIDs

• As an aggregator of aggregators, Europeana is hit hard by lack of PIDs

• Typically 3% of dead links – Temporary outages– Objects moved, URLs changed

• http 301 redirects not used very much• Daily checks and feedback through

http://sandbox22.isti.cnr.it/linkcheck_results.html

Our own Europeana IDs

• Hash based on dataset ID and object ID– http://www.europeana.eu/portal/record/

92034/666518D4D3B2808F4891C0205E7D41214CA5F108.html

• Heuristics to keep dataset ID constant• Object ID comes from data provider, so is

just as ‘persistent’ as the original• Growing number of object IDs that are

‘official PIDs’

Advocacy

• Need for PIDs explained in handbooks and instructions for Data Providers

• We have to be agnostic as to which PID scheme is used

• Need for meta-resolver?– Not really: users of PIDs als give us good

URIs

Europeana – How can we help

• Europeana is more than just ‘the office’

• Network of >500 motivated individuals, 2200 Data Providers, Aggregators and projects

• So how can we help?– Should we perhaps assign PIDs and share

with providers?– How can we improve advocacy?
