Days
The Art of the Sacred under Threat: persecution, destruction, resurrection Saturday, 9 March 2019 10:30 – 3:30
A study day looking at the power of certain sacred images to survive periods of crisis, persecution and destruction throughout the centuries. Exploring Icons of the Orthodox Church.
Mary Beal is an art historian and previously a curator at the Government Art Collection in London. Her interest in the history of icons developed from an interest in the history of Russian film and in countries formerly part of the Soviet Union, where the Russian Orthodox Church plays a highly visible role.
Etty Hillesum, a Voice of Freedom & Hope Tuesday, 22 Jan 2019 10:30 – 3:30
Etty Hillesum, a remarkable Jewish woman, has become an insightful, profound and inspirational voice through her diaries, which were published in the 1980s. Determined to face the inner landscape of her own troubled mind, Etty also refused to escape an outer landscape dominated by Nazi oppression in occupied Holland. Etty was only 29 years old when she was killed in Auschwitz.
The day will explore the life, thought and spirituality of Etty Hillesum and will include presentation, enacted monologues, discussion, reflection, stillness and prayer.
Donna Worthington is an experienced retreat giver and worked at the ecumenical Tabor Retreat Centre in Preston, Lancashire. Donna studied Theology and is trained in Ignatian spiritual direction. She has written various plays including Through The Leaves of The Green Tree, which she specially wrote to celebrate the anniversary of Etty Hillesum’s birth in 1914.
