It’s been an interminably long winter, full of icy days and biting wind. The tree stands forlorn and lost, bereft of its leaves and branches, shivering in the sub zero temperatures. The tree mourns the past as memories of days gone by flicker like a dream. The tree ponders its future, is there any hope left? How can I go on? Violent winds shove the tree and pull at its brittle branches as the tree struggles to stand tall and remain.

Tu B’Shevat – the dead of the winter; when summer seems so far off and winter stretching on and on. It is precisely at this time, when the tree is totally lost of its vigour that renewal commences once more. Tu B’Shevat – a time of growth and revival! Rosh Hashanah for the trees, a time when each tree’s prosperity is decided, a day that fate changes, a new dawn

arises.

We cannot endure anymore! It is at the moment when darkness is all encompassing that light seeps in. The darkest part of the night is stepping stone for spiritual growth, a time to renew our relationship with Hashem and to strive to achieve higher heights. It is in the deep of the winter, in the bleakest situations that new opportunities arise, that light will shine again. Tu B’Shevat is the day – reminding us that we will blossom once again, from darkens into light, from winter into spring and from Galus to Geulah.

Known for their sweet white meat, coconuts are more than just tasty treats. In fact, research shows they may even combat tooth decay. Who knew?

Tooth decay is the breakdown of tooth enamel, which is the hard white substance that protects your teeth. It’s a major health problem in the industrialized world, affecting 90% of Americans over the age of 20.

Poor oral health is not to be taken lightly. It’s been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and even stroke. So it’s important that you take good care of your teeth, if you want to remain healthy.

Below, we’ll take a look at the potential that coconut oil may hold for keeping tooth decay at bay.

Coconuts Kill Plaque Causing BacteriaOne of the problems facing scientists today is antibiotic resistant bacteria. Antibiotics, which used to be very effective, are losing their power against common strains of bacteria. Consequently, many researchers are testing natural ingredients as potential sources.

In one such attempt to look for alternate sources, scientists tested coconut oil. They tested various species of Streptococcus bacteria against altered (modified with enzymes) and natural coconut oil.

They found that enzyme-treated coconut oil inhibited the growth of most Streptococcus bacteria. One in particular was Streptococcus mutans, an acid-producing bacterium that causes tooth decay and cavities. Most of us carry these pesky bacteria in our mouth.

Coconuts are Effective

“Germ” FightersThese findings are not all that surprising, in light of previous research. In one particular study, scientists discovered that green coconut water has anti-microbial peptides, which can kill a variety of bacteria.

Also, coconut extracts have been shown to kill one strain of the herpes virus.

And not to mention, coconut oil also has anti-fungal effects. One of its victims is Candida albicans, a yeast that causes oral thrush and yeast infections.

Now this is pretty impressive, considering that man-made antibiotics are very limited

and not effective against viruses or fungi.

Coconut Oil Toothpaste — Coming to a Store Near You?So, what are the implications of the study? Pretty straightforward: Coconut oil could someday be incorporated into dental products like toothpaste and mouthwash.

Not bad, considering some of the ingredients found in many of today’s oral health products are highly questionable at best.

So, adding coconut oil to your diet could potentially make things a little more bearable for your teeth. This hasn’t been tested of course, but it does make for good fruit for thought, L’kavod Tu Bishvat!

Try any fresh or frozen fruit for these handheld pies. NOTE: A little cinnamon is great with apples and pears. If using frozen fruit, increase sugar to 1/2 cup.

Ingredients1/3 cup sugar2 tsp cornstarch½ tsp coarse salt¾ lb fresh or frozen fruit, cut into 1-inch pieces if necessaryFinely grated zest of 1 lemonAll-purpose flour - for work surface2 sheets frozen puff pastry - thawed2 large egg yolksCoarse sugar (optional)

Directions:1. In a medium bowl, combine sugar, cornstarch and salt. Add fruit and lemon zest; toss to coat. 2. On a lightly floured work surface, roll each sheet of pastry into an 11-by-18-inch rectangle and cut into eight 4 ½ -by-5 ½-inch rectangles.3. Dividing evenly, place filling lengthwise on one half of each rectangle, leaving a ½ -inch border. 4. Combine 1 egg yolk with 1 tsp water. Brush border with egg wash and fold dough over filling and press edges to seal well. 5. With the tip of a sharp knife, cut vents into pastry. Turnover can be frozen until ready to serve (see below)6. To serve, preheat oven to 400, with rack in lower third. 7. Place desired number of frozen turnovers on a parchment-lined baking sheet. 8. Combine 1 egg yolk with 1 tsp water; brush egg wash onto turnovers and sprinkle with coarse sugar (optional). 9. Bake until turnovers are deep golden brown and juices are bubbling, approximately 15 to 17 minutes, rotating sheet halfway through.

NOTE: Freeze turnovers on a parchment-lined baking sheet until firm. Layer with wax paper in a resealable container or freezer bag. Can be stored in the freezer, up to 1 month.

Knife

Directions:

1. Select a large fruit that will hold your variety of flowers.

2. Cut the very top of the fruit or vegetable off with a knife.

3. Carve a 3 inch round/deep opening in the fruit.

4. Carve the floral foam to fit inside of the votive holder.

5. Put the floral foam inside of the votive holder and place into the fruit or vegetable opening.

6. Pour water into votive holder.

7. Snip the stems of the flowers and arrange them to your liking and stick them one by one into the foam.

in 1887 a German glassblower, F.E. Muller, produced the first eye covering to be seen through and tolerated. In 1887, the German ophthalmologist, Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick, constructed and fitted the first successful contact lens. While working in Zurich, he described fabricating afocal scleral contact shells, which rested on the less sensitive rim of tissue around the cornea and experimentally fitting them initially on rabbits, then on himself, and lastly on a small group of volunteers. These lenses were made from heavy blown glass and were 18–21 millimeters in diameter.

Fick filled the empty space between cornea/callosity and glass with a dextrose solution. He published his work in March 1888. Fick’s lens was large, unwieldy, and could only be worn for a couple of hours at a time. August Muller in Kiel, Germany corrected his own severe myopia with a more convenient glass-blown scleral contact lens of his own manufacture in 1888.
