Toyota to Build Vehicle Development CenterToyota Motors Kyushu announced it would build a new vehicle development center on the site of its Miyata plant in Fukuoka Prefecture. They plan to start hiring technicians this month and have the center fully operational by mid-2010. The center will primarily develop parts for Toyota models. The company is the first automaker to build a center of this sort in Kyushu.
J2 Rosso Kumamoto Promoted to J2The J League directors granted approval for the promotion of Rosso Kumamoto of the Japan Football League to the J League's J2 division, in addition to a team from Gifu Prefecture. They will start J2 play next season. They thus become Kyushu's fourth J League team and third team in the J2 division.
Sharp Increase in Fukuoka Bicycle AccidentsThe number of traffic accidents involving bicycles and in which the riders suffered injuries has risen sharply in Fukuoka Prefecture. Prefectural police report that notifications of accidents skyrocketed by 5.8 times from 2001 to 2006, and that 40% of the accidents are accounted for by people from 16 to 24 years of age. Police suggest the reason for the increase is the reckless behavior of the cyclists.
1 ANA Takes 100 Million Yen Stake in StarflyerThe Kitakyushu-based airline Starflyer revealed that All Nippon Airways has taken a roughly 100 million yen stake in the company. It accepted the funds through the receipt of a third-party share allotment. ANA now owns roughly a 1% share of the smaller airline. This is expected to further the existing business ties between the two airlines.
Winter Bonus Preferences SurveyedThe Nishi-Nippon City Bank revealed the results of its survey of housewives' intended use of winter bonuses. One surprising result was that investment trusts finished second in the ranking of preferences with 23.6%, with the first preference being savings accounts at 68.4%. These were followed by insurance at 23.4%, government bonds at 13.9%, foreign currency savings accounts at 10.7%, and stocks at 7.2%.
Kyushu Successfully Attracting CompaniesStatistics for the first half of FY 2007 show the number of companies in the manufacturing industry making large investments in new plants in Kyushu exceeded 100. It was the first time in 13 years that level had been reached. The total area of the plants to be located in Kyushu is 50% higher in than in the year-before period. This accounts for 17% of the land area for new plants throughout Japan.
2006 Record High in Kyushu-Asia Trade in 2006The Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry released its report on the internationalization of Kyushu and Asia in 2007, which analyzes economic activity between the two regions. The report states there was a 15.7% rise in exports from Kyushu to Asia in 2006, at a value of 5.562 trillion yen, while imports soared 26.2% to 5.744 trillion yen. Both were record highs, indicating the greater integration between the two regions.
Karatsu Castle Walls Slated to be RepairedThe walls of the Karatsu Castle in Saga Prefecture will be repaired due to concerns of a potential collapse. The deterioration is most severe on the south side, and sections of the east and west sides also require reinforcement. Next year will be the 400th anniversary of the castle's construction.
Water Summit Ends in BeppuThe First Asia-Pacific Water Summit ended in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, on the 4th. Participants agreed on a "Message from Beppu" that called for efforts to obtain safe drinking water for everyone in the region and the construction of purification facilities to achieve that goal. The target is to halve the number of people without access to safe water by 2015, and to provide safe water to everyone in the region by 2025.
Fukuoka Area Taxi Fares to be RaisedThe Kyushu District Transport Bureau decided to authorize an increase in taxi fares in the Fukuoka metropolitan area in mid-November. The maximum for the initial fare covering the first 1.6 kilometers will rise from the current 590 yen to either
640 or 650 yen. The add-on fares would also rise. This will be the first increase in local taxi fares since April 1997, a period of more than 10 years.
Business School Launches Free PaperThe University of Kitakyushu's graduate business school has started publishing Ajiritasu, a free newspaper for people in the business world. The school's graduate students will write articles about new technology, corporate accounting, and other subjects. They also plan to present information from their research in the newspaper. The university said they hope the articles increase interest in the school as well as business management.
JR JR Kyushu Buys Shato HantenSources revealed that JR Kyushu has purchased all the shares of Shato Hanten, a company operating Chinese restaurants at such sites as the Tenjin district of Fukuoka City and Amuplaza, the commercial facility at the JR Kagoshima Chuo Station. They have converted the company to a wholly owned subsidiary. There are also plans to open one of the restaurants in the new JR Hakata Station building that will open in 2011.
Instructions in Korean for TouristsWith the recent sharp increase in South Korean tourists to such Kyushu hot spring resorts as Yufuin and Kurokawa, Kyuden Infocom of Fukuoka City has printed posters and flyers in Korean and English explaining the proper procedures for using the bath. Koreans also have a bath culture, but the practices are different from those in Japan. One such instruction is the recommendation to rinse off or wash before entering the bath.
Kitakyushu to Slash Water BillsThe city of Kitakyushu revealed a new policy of cutting by half the basic rate it charges industry for water. It will also establish a special discount system for further rate reductions for companies with factories that increase production. For large users, this basic rate could be lowered to 25 yen per ton. The new rates were implemented to attract more companies to the region, particularly in the automotive industry.

6 Disappointing Regional Interim ResultsExchange-listed companies in Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture released their interim reports for the first half of the fiscal year, which showed that 46 of these 73 companies, or more than 60%, posted declines in current profit or losses. Soaring costs of oil and materials had a major impact on companies in the manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries alike. In contrast, an equal number of companies reported revenue increases, and of these 47, 31 posted record high revenues.
Nagoya Castle as Large as Osaka Castle?The prefectural Nagoya Castle Museum of Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, announced it has discovered the old foundations of 10 separate wings in addition to the main area of the original castle, which was built for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of the Korean Peninsula. The museum says the size and layout of the additional structures
closely resembles that of the Osaka Castle, suggesting that Hideyoshi considered it an important site. The museum's survey was conducted from 2004 to 2007.
Kyushu Rice to be Exported to ChinaJA Kyushu-Okinawa revealed they are the first agricultural group in the country to have signed a contract with a Chinese trading company for the export of 2,000 tons of rice to China. Delegates from the regional JA group recently visited Shanghai to publicize the Kyushu Danji brand of hinohikari rice. Japanese rice is 10 times more expensive than Chinese rice, but there is a demand for it in Shanghai, a city with a booming economy, because it is safe and there is a dependable supply.
50 Nissan Predicts Kyushu Output of 500,000In an interview with the Nishinippon Shimbun, Nissan President Carlos Ghosn says that full production at the company's
Fukuoka Prefecture plant will continue, and he expects the plant to produce more than 500,000 units next year. Since reaching a peak of 530,000 units in 2003, the plant's production slid to 350,000 last year. He also says that while there are no immediate plans to manufacture such core parts as engines in Kyushu, it is open for discussion in the future.
Acute Infectious Gastroenteritis RagingThere has been a rapid increase in Kyushu of patients suffering from acute infectious gastroenteritis, which causes severe vomiting and diarrhea. In six Kyushu prefectures (Miyazaki excepted) during the last week of November, there more than 20 new cases per observed medical institution, exceeding the standards for issuing a health caution. The virus causing the problem is particularly severe. People are encouraged to make sure they cook food properly and wash their hands before eating.
