How I learned to study Torah (2)Summary: The parents of a little boy from a small shtetl in Europe are extremely concerned about their son’s disinterest to study Torah. After following advice from many people to no avail, the parents approached Rebbe Aaron of Karlin who had come to visit their shtetl. The Rebbe asked that they leave their little son with him and he will give him a talking to that he will never forget.

Once the boy’s parents had

left the room, the Rebbe

approached the boy and

slowly and gently put his

arms around him.

At first the boy remained

stiff but then he relaxed

and dropped his arms to

the side. He finally rested

his head against the Rebbe’s

chest and stood there, listening to the

rhythm of the Rebbe’s heartbeat.

The parents returned after two hours and

breathlessly asked, “Did it work?”

The Rebbe nearly shouted and said, “You

must wait and see!”

All the way home, the parents kept sneaking

at their boy. Was there any change? Could

there be any change?

They stopped at the butcher’s who hastily

slapped a piece of meat on the counter.

The boy noticed the butcher’s anger and

wondered what made him act and feel that

way.

During the ensuing weeks and months, the

parents realized that their son became more

in touch with people and more attuned

to their feelings. When he heard a Torah

discussion, he suddenly became fascinated.

Within passing time, the boy learned and

learned and developed into a serious young

man. The flame of Torah was brightly lit

within him.

One day, two neighbors

were arguing over the

purchase of a calf. The

boy went up to them and

to the amazement of the

neighbors, he showed them

both how to be satisfied

with the transaction.

Before long, many adults in the village were

bringing their quarrels before the boy who

would be able to rule with logic and a clear

head. He would also point out to them that

the solutions had been in their hearts, but

that over the roar of their anger could not

hear.

The boy grew up and became a renowned

Rebbe himself who later became known as

the greatest Rebbe of his generation. His

talmidim once asked him, “How did you

get your deep Torah insight?”

He would answer, “I learnt how to study

Torah from the great Rebbe, Reb Aaron of

Karlin, the defining moment occurred when

the Rebbe held me silently against his chest

French researchers1say they’ve found a definite link between vitamins and cognitive performance in 4,447 men and women between the ages of 45 and 60. Dr. Emmanuelle Kesse-Guyot of the University of Paris concluded this from the study: “Vitamins and minerals are important for memory.” She also added, however, that they aren’t as important as diet and exercise.Multivitamins Can Help Clear Mental CobwebsThe study participants were randomized

into two groups. One group received a daily multivitamin while the other group received a placebo. The subjects were followed closely for eight years — meaning the researchers actually counted pills for each participant to ensure high compliance. After those eight years, the researchers stopped counting pills and left it up to the subjects to remain compliant. The study continued an additional six years. At the end of the study (14 years total),

the subjects underwent the same memory tests they did at the beginning of the study. The researchers then tabulated the results and here’s what they found.• Both groups

scored about the same with short-term memory although the multivitamin group did slightly better.• The multivitamin

group performed far better on long-term memory tests than the placebo group.Important Points to

ConsiderThe researchers involved in the study

were quick to caution against overreaching conclusions. “Our results have to be considered carefully,” wrote the authors of the final report, which was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Higher cognitive performance may

indeed be based on a better diet; however, it may also be that people who have better thinking skills adhere to better eating habits as well, which may include taking vitamin supplements. At this point, it is hard to tell which one is the proverbial chicken and which one is the egg. What You Need to KnowBrain health depends on how well

you preserve nerve cell structure and communication connections as you age. This suggests two things: First, increase the amount of antioxidants in your regimen since oxidative stress is detrimental to nerve cell structure. Second, consider taking magnesium, a mineral that supports your critical nerve cells connections. If nerve cell connections fail, memory and recall become more and more difficult
