From the Executive DirectorFrom the Executive DirectorFrom the Executive DirectorFrom the Executive Director

I want to again thank all those people who continue

to support the camp. It is gratifying in these

challenging times to receive the assistance we

require to offer children the chance to be part of a

fun, supportive and welcoming community.

We, like many others, have continued to make

adjustments to weather these stormy times. We

have drastically slashed our already lean budget.

We are finding ways to stretch dollars further than

we thought they could be stretched. We are

seeking out new partnerships and actively

recruiting interns and volunteers to help expand our

capacity to serve children. And, rest assured, while

tightening our belts, we have not in any way

sacrificed the quality of our programming.

We continue to push ourselves to improve what we

offer the campers in our care. This summer we

served as a pilot site for Camp2Grow, a national

American Camp Association teen leadership

program with a focus on promoting environmental

stewardship.

We also continue to assess ourselves to see what

we can do to increase the benefits to our campers.

We were one of the pilot sites for the Marion County

Commission on Youth’s Quality Counts program

assessments. Thanks to a grant from Lilly

Endowment we are assessing our youth leadership

program with the intent to strengthen what we

provide in that program area.

Looking to 2010, it is vitally important that we get

the message out to the community about the role

Jameson Camp plays in the lives of so many

children. We know the good work we do, we hear

from the kids and their parents and others, but

more people need to know about us. This is our call

to action. We encourage all our friends and

supporters of Jameson Camp to join us in helping to

spread the word about what the camp has to offer

both as a youth serving agency and a retreat center.

Please encourage your friends and associates to

learn about Jameson Camp as we strive to build a

wider network.

We held our fourth annual Jubilee on September 26th with our

presenting sponsor Citizens Energy Group. This year we held

more of a camp-like event with a variety of games being of-

fered and inviting children to attend with their families. Every-

one had a good time, some new people were introduced to

the camp and yes, we even raised some money for the camp.

Thank you to all the people who helped make the Jubilee pos-

sible.

Our appreciation goes to: our emcees, Todd Wallace from

WRTV and Dave Smiley from the Smiley in the Morning radio

program; all the Jameson board members; former board

members; volunteers; our generous event sponsors; dona-

tors of auction items; the restaurants who donated their time

and many many delicious treats; Dean Metcalf and the other

band members who hit the right notes all through the Jubilee;

and special thanks to Lori Counts who was lead staff on the

event. Extra special recognition has to go to our two youth

leader representatives who spoke at the Jubilee. Youth Lead-

ers, Chris Buchanan and Destiny Nicely, volunteered to tell

their personal account of their Jameson experience and the

impact it has had on their lives. They both did a fantastic job

and received standing ovations for their heartfelt and often

moving accounts. An excerpt from Destiny’s comments are

We were fortunate this past year to have Kate Nielsen Kate Nielsen Kate Nielsen Kate Nielsen serving at the camp. Kate helped to organize our successful Spring into Wellness community health fair and was the lead person for planning and implementing fun yet informative health activi-ties during summer camp. Kate also organized the entire Wellness Week of camp, a specialty session based on making health decisions in every day life. During her year of service, Kate spent many of her weekends volunteering at wellness events throughout Indianapolis in service to her community. Kate did a great job and will be missed. We are pleased to announce that Michael Menafee, another Americorp volunteer, will soon be joining us as the new AmeriCorps Wellness Coordinator.

We tend to focus on the positive impact Jameson

Camp has on its campers but the experience has

also made a lasting impression on many of the

counselors who have worked here. Recently, we

received two accounts one from Ryan Warren who

was a counselor here a few years ago, and another

from Joanne Fox who was here… well, let’s say more

than a few years ago. And then we share a note

from one this year’s first time counselors.

“Essential Work”“Essential Work”“Essential Work”“Essential Work”

From Ryan Warren

At different points in our lives we are in different

positions to do different things. My first experience

with Jameson Camp was in the summer of 1996.

Hired as a counselor, I was instantly exposed to the

extreme joys and equally extreme hardships of

camp life, thrown together with a group of strangers

to spend a summer working with a group of camp-

ers, strangers also, yet a bit more imaginative. It’s

hard to explain who we were - this ragtag group of

counselors and campers.

We came from varied backgrounds with experi-

ences and stories to match. We were asked to bring

our strengths to the forefront of all that we did.

Fears were not to be simply accepted, but they were

to be questioned, challenged, and confronted –

never alone, always together. We had to sing. We

didn’t have to be best friends, but we couldn’t be

enemies. We could agree to disagree. Campers

learned to lead, counselors learned to follow. We

smiled and we laughed and we learned very quickly,

that we were in this together.

As the years have gone by, I have come to realize

that Jameson Camp provides what few other places

can or do. It is a place that asks that you fully repre-

sent yourself while providing the space and encour-

agement for others to do so as well, being open to

their unique qualities and beliefs while sharing

yours. It is learning not just to get along, but to find

common elements to which we all can and must

contribute. The campers know that they are valued

and that they can, that they must, contribute. It is

essential work that must be supported. And, while I

am no longer in a position to contribute as a coun-

selor, I have recently made the decision that my

support will come through my time and my finances

as I am able, and my commitment to Jameson

Camp is stronger than ever.

“I am forever grateful”“I am forever grateful”“I am forever grateful”“I am forever grateful”

From Joanne Fox

When I was 8 years old, I was referred to Julia

Jameson Nutrition Camp and Theodore Potter Fresh

Air School. My 2 sisters and I were considered to be

underprivileged and nutritionally challenged. I

spent every summer from 8 to 17 years old at

camp. My mother could not afford to pay for us to

attend camp and with each visit she would meet

with the Director of Camp, Miss Margaret Weadick,

to discuss her finances (or the lack of). Some kind

soul financed our camping summers.

I was a camper from 8 to 13 yrs old. When I was

14, I “graduated” to cook’s helper. The next year, I

was “promoted” to counselor – first in the cottage

and then into the main building. Through the years,

I developed a great respect and fondness for

Miss Margaret and she became my first role model.

She exhibited an example of good leadership , a

good work ethic and a pleasant, happy disposition –

and all those strengths appealed to me. Her ability

to influence certain people and situations im-

pressed my young mind and I decided at a very

young age, that I wanted to be like her.

It took many years to realize that hope – but gradu-

ally through the years, I worked hard and found the

position that allowed me to utilize the strengths she

had taught. I began work at Regenstrief Institute

as an administrative assistant when the Institute

had only 10 employees. Through the years, the In-

stitute grew and so did my position and influence

and I was promoted to Assistant to the Director/

Administrator. The Institute grew to over 125 fac-

ulty/staff under my administrative reign and I was

able to use the strengths I had learned at camp

years ago.

I am forever grateful.

“Discovering My Strengths”“Discovering My Strengths”“Discovering My Strengths”“Discovering My Strengths”

From a 2009 counselor

I came to camp thinking I knew why I was here. I

wanted to help kids by giving them a good experi-

ence and sharing my enthusiasm for nature and

life. Gradually though, I’m coming to realize what I

get from the experience. I am finding my footing

and becoming more confident in myself, discovering

strengths (and a few weaknesses) that I wasn’t sure

I had. Jameson is still about the campers for me

but I underestimated its positive impact on the

counselors as well.”

Jameson is a year round youth development center. We are still busy serving children and youth and others long

after the summer ends. Since summer camp we have hosted fourteen school and other youth field trips out for

outdoor education and challenge course programming. Our year round youth leadership program is very active in

the non-summer months.

cluded our climbing wall and high ropes and an orienteering course at the

camp.

that included haunted cabins and trails, games, costume contests and the

appropriately ghastly –looking food. Over 200 camper families attended.

Grant for Outdoor EducationGrant for Outdoor EducationGrant for Outdoor EducationGrant for Outdoor Education We are pleased to announce a grant to Jameson Camp

from the R.B. Annis Family Foundation to support our

outdoor education program. A growing emphasis of the

camp is to utilize our 100 acres of woods and meadows

within the city to introduce children to the wonders of

nature and pleasures of being outdoors.

In 2010, we intend to convert 17 acres of our property

that had been leased to a local farmer back to nature to

be used as an outdoor lab by our campers and local

school children. We have formed a partnership with

Wayne Township schools that would result in thousands

of fourth, fifth and sixth graders helping with the

restoration project and observing its changes over time.

Thank you to the Annis Foundation and others for

helping us to connect kids with nature for another year.
