Personal Statement

James McNally is currently the Director of the NACDA Program on Aging at the University of

Michigan, Ann Arbor. Originally trained in forensic anthropology at the University of Maryland

and then formal demography and population health at Georgetown University, Dr. McNally

developed an interest in aging health and gerontology while at Brown University and in policy

application of health data while a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Syracuse University's Center for Policy

Research. He currently does methodological research on the improvement and enhancement of

secondary research data and his work on imputation has been cited in deliberations before the

U.S. Supreme Court. During his career he has worked extensively with studies on the aging

lifecourse, health, retirement and international aspects of aging. He has spent much of his career

addressing methodological issues of measuring health outcomes; specifically focusing on

applications for using secondary data in research applications. He has helped design and
