James Doran-Webb − Animalier
James was born in 1967 and spent his early childhood in Devon. His education was as privileged as it was unconventional. His parents travelled extensively in the pursuit of art and antiques, and James spent his teenage years schooling in Basel, Switzerland, on the Adriatic coast of Italy, on the East coast of the States and central France before returning to London to take his ‘A’ levels.
James is both a talented craftsman and a naturally gifted artist. He has always loved antiques and has been working with wood since he was a small boy. His childhood was spent in the workshops of his parents’ antiques restoration company both in the UK and in France, whittling, carving and refinishing. In 1989 James travelled to the Philippines for an extended holiday which was to change his life, so entranced was he by the beautiful islands and their abundance of natural materials that he chose to make them his home. Today he works in his Cebu studio helped by a small team of assistants.
Over the years he has amassed a huge collection of driftwood, each individual piece hewn by nature’s forces into a myriad of individual shapes. Hundreds, often thousands of hours go into the creation of each individual work. Hours are spent searching for the perfect piece of wood he needs to provide the energy and the vivid reality he strives to give to each of his breathtakingly haunting creations.
The sculptures are built around a painstakingly constructed stainless steel armature onto which the driftwood is attached using a combination of stainless steel bolts, screws and nails. The dead wood, found along the shorelines and riverbeds of the Philippine Archipelago is from a number of indigenous species to the Philippines, all dense enough to withstand years and years of exposure to the extreme tropical climate.
James exhibits annually at the Chelsea Flower Show and in 2013 won the Director General’s award for the Best Trade Stand. He has a huge International following. In 2013 Singapore’s prestigious Gardens by the Bay, one of Singapore’s most popular tourist destinations and now avid champions of James’ sculptures, commissioned three life size thoroughbreds to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Horse. These sculptures have proved so popular with their millions of visitors, they further commissioned James to make a six metre long Wyvern and three larger than life Goats which were imstalled early 2015. He is currently making a 6m high sculpture of 5 monkeys interacting in a jungle playground for delivery early 2016 in celebration of the Year of the Monkey.
James’ large sculptures are suitable for display indoors or out and full installation and care instructions are on his website.
