Sadie Jo Bingham, the Gila County Recorder, has announced that her office has begun to mail out new voter identification cards to all registered voters in Gila County. This mailing process will take a little over a week to complete since more than 28,000 cards will be mailed. Mrs. Bingham anticipates that all cards will be mailed by Jan. 29. The identification cards may be used at the polling places as one form of identification when you vote in person. Once their new card is received their old card should be destroyed so there is no confusion about assigned districts.

This mailing is also a way to verify correct addresses. If you receive a card for a voter who no longer resides at your address, please write a note that the person no longer lives there and place the card back in the mail. You do not need to add postage to return the card. Returning the cards will help keep the voter registration roll as clean as possible. Federal law does not allow for the removal of a voter from the voter registration roll unless undeliverable mail is returned to our office. If you do not receive a card by Feb. 5 and you believe you are registered to vote, please call the Recorder’s Office at 928-402-8731 or 800-291-4452.

The Town of Kearny is in the midst of a number of vital discussions. Kearny, Hayden, Winkelman and

Mammoth are exploring the establishment of a single police force for the four towns. This last week landscape architecture students from Arizona State University spent several hour with area ranchers,

the Town of Kearny, representatives from ASARCO, the Winkelman Natural Resources Conservation District and several entities from the State of Arizona to explore many of the issues involved in removing the tamarisk plants along the Gila River, replace them with helpful plants, and develop a portion of the river

Vandal Adds One More Problem to Kearny’s Growing Pilefor public recreation. Last week, after the Town Council approved a raise in the water rates, work began on seeking a Water Infrastructure Finance Authority loan in order to do some very necessary work on our water tanks and lines. Town Manager Anna Flores is also getting ready for the opening of the town pool this summer. These are good things to be working on, and soon we will begin work on Kearny’s Ten-Year Plan and Economic Development Strategy. That’s enough eggs for anyone’s plate. But someone cracked another egg. I received a call from Anna Flores. “Someone tried to burn down the rest room at Hubbard Park.” This senseless act of vandalism makes me angry. What are we supposed to do? Fix it up with money we don’t have so it can be used until someone else tries to set it on fire? Shall we close it up and let gosh-knows-what happen behind the trees and bushes? Right now our town crew keeps the rest room clean and open from 6 a.m. until the park closes at night. It’s the responsible

thing to do for a park which is used so heavily, especially in the summer months. This vandalism is an unnecessary problem, one which should not have happened in the first place. If anyone has any information on this, please call the Kearny Police Department at 363-5566.

It’s a New Year! , and we want to tell you all about the new things that are happening at Family First Pregnancy Care Center and Family Diaper Bank. Beginning in February we will be open on Wednesday by apt. only and on Thursdays instead of Tuesdays and will be taking appointments from 9am-4pm. Please call to schedule your appointment as we tend to fill up at certain times of the day. Something else new for Family First is our Fathers’ workshops. Thursday nights will be dedicated to the Fathers in our community. We will be hosting a Fathers’ workshop on Thursday nights at 4:30 p.m. All Fathers are welcome to join us for a time of learning about issues that pertain to men in particular. Our first workshop will be about how to create a Home of honor. These classes will be taught by a man, and will be a great time to connect with other men and a safe

environment to share your experiences with each other. In February, we will be collecting diapers for our annual diaper drive. Beginning February 1st there will be a box at Norms IGA where you can leave diapers. Our families earn diapers by attending our Earn While You Learn classes and they receive Mommy Money to shop in our boutique for diapers and other supplies. Your support is greatly appreciated!! We are also in desperate need of volunteers. Our volunteers help us run smoothly by providing office help, playing with children, stocking our boutique and assisting director with center needs. If you would like to know more about us and how you can help please call us at 520-664-5795. The center is located at 508 Thorne Ave., Winkelman. Visit them online at familyfirstpcc.org.

After extending its winning streak to six games with victories at San Tan Foothills and at home against Cibecue earlier last week, the seventh-ranked Ray girls’ basketball team suffered a 62 – 55 loss at home to second-ranked San Carlos on Friday night. The Lady Cats, now 6 – 3 in Section IV games, are currently in fifth place and nearly assured of a berth in sectional tournament, which should be considered the toughest tournament in the state regardless of division. Five of the top-nine teams in the Division V rankings will be in the six-team field, including San Carlos, Ft. Thomas, Duncan, Ray, and Mogollon. Senior Stormee Galka recorded an unconventional triple-double in the Lady Cats’ 58 – 27 win at San Tan Foothills last

Tuesday, finishing with 10 points, 11 assists and 19 steals. Galka was one of three Lady Cats’ to score in double figures in the win, joining senior Savannah Willis (18) and freshman Tara Lorona (10). Savannah Rodriguez, a sophomore, just missed a double-double, finishing with nine points to go along with 12 steals. Sophomore Emma Alvarado pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in addition to recording seven steals. Alvarado, Rodriguez, and Galka, who was named Player of the Game, combined for 38 of the Lady Cats’ 45 steals in the game. Savannah Rodriguez scored a game-high 14 points and Emma Alvarado added 12 in the 64 – 49 win against Cibecue. Savannah Willis led the team with eight rebounds while Stormee Galka dished out a game-high nine assists in addition to her game-high nine steals. Upcoming schedule: Jan. 27 at Mogollon, Jan. 29 vs. Superior, and Feb. 2 at Hayden. All games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Did you get free money for school? Qualified students could have received up to a $5,775 Pell Grant Award for the 2015/16 academic year. A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be paid back. Unfor-tunately, many do not take advantage of this opportunity. Do you plan to attend college in fall of 2016? NOW is the time to apply for financial Aid. To apply you will need to fill out the FAFSA or the “Free Application for Federal Stu-dent Aid” at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The actual award amount de-pends on your financial need, costs to attend school, status as a full-time or part-time student, and plans to attend school for a full academic year or less. Are you still not sure what to do? Gila Community College is here to help! Attend our FREE Financial Aid Workshop on Thursday, February 11th at 5:30 pm at the GCC Gila Pueblo Campus at 8274 South Six Shooter Canyon Road in Globe. Everyone is invited, including parents, regardless of what college or university the student will be attending. Our friendly staff will walk you through the process and answer your questions. What are you waiting for? Act today! You can do it and GCC will help!

Since last summer, Jimmy Birkett has gotten to see a lot of the United States. In June 2015, he took a job as a driver for System Transport Inc. and he sees the country from a perspective that many drivers never get – from the driver’s seat high up in his semi-truck. “The prettiest is Oregon,” Jimmy told the Copper Basin News late last week.

His route brought him and his 48-foot tractor-trailer rig to Kearny and he was able to stop and visit his family for a couple of days. He was scheduled to pick up a load of copper in Arizona and take it to Texas. Jimmy said he enjoys his job. But we think his parents, Gary and Lorraine, were glad to have him home, even if it were only for a couple of days.

Local boy sees the country one mile at a time

Jimmy Birkett was excited he could spend a little time with family before heading back to the open road. James Carnes | CBN
