Fellow-Citizens:

We stand to-day upon an eminence which overlooks a hundred years of national life--a century crowded with perils, but crowned with the triumphs of liberty and law. Before continuing the onward march let us pause on this height for a moment to strengthen our faith and renew our hope by a glance at the pathway along which our people have traveled.

Inaugural Ball Program, March 4, 1881.

SUMMARY Measuring only about 3 x 5 inches, this small memento of President Garfield's inaugural ball is one of three among the papers of William Evarts who, in 1881, was a delegate to the International Monetary Conference in Paris. Previously, he had been the attorney general and was the chief counsel to President Andrew Johnson during Johnson's impeachment trial in 1868. Later, he served as the secretary of state under President Hayes and, from 1885 to 1891, he served in the U.S. Senate as a Republican senator from New York.

Five newspaper clippings describing Garfield's journey by train from Mentor, Ohio, to Washington and his inauguration ceremonies, from James A. Garfield Scrapbook, Volume 23, ca. Feb 28 through March 5, 1881, pages 1-3 of Scrapbook.

SUMMARY This sampling of newspaper clippings from President Garfield's own scrapbook includes General Tinker's farewell speech to President-elect Garfield on the eve of his departure from Mentor, Ohio, and Garfield's reply; a description of his departure by train from Mentor on February 28th--a crisp, cold day with snow flurries--and of the family and friends who accompanied him to Washington; a newspaper printing of the full text of the inaugural address; and summaries of the inaugural ceremonies in the Daily Picayune and the Providence Journal.
