JAKE POWEL LEADS “NEW ORLEANS QUINTET” IN JUNE 15TH CONCERT, WRAPPING UP SPRING SERIES June 2014 Volume 39, Number 06 NOTES FROM the PREZ! The veteran aggregation known as “The New Orleans Quintet” plays for the mid-June PSTJS concert which wraps up the first half of our 2014 schedule. Banjo-and-guitar virtuoso Jake Powel, a veteran of a half- century on the Seattle classic-jazz scene, has taken over leadership of the group of well-known Northwest musicians who have played for various bands at the New Orleans Café in Seattle’s Pioneer Square for long years. The quintet includes cornet & reeds instrumentalist Steve Wright; pianist Solomon Douglas; bassist Matt Weiner; clarinetist and George Goldsberry. Powel has been long noted for his tasty guitar solo work as well as solid rhythmic banjo backing for the group. A varied spectrum of jazz styles is exhibited in their program – something for lovers of early-day New Orleans origins, as well as for those attuned to more “swing era” mainstream jazz. By Rod Belcher WHERE: Ballard Elks Lodge, 6411 Seaview Ave. NW, Seattle. WHEN: 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 15 ADMISSION: $12 PSTJS members; $15 non-members. Pay only at door. FURTHER INFO: Carol Rippey 425-776-5072. Or - website: www.pstjs.org. Plenty of free parking; great view & dance floor, snacks, coffee, and other beverages available. Following this concert, we’re silent through July and August, picking up again in September with the customary appearance of the Bob Schulz Frisco Jazz Band. Here we are at the end of our 2013–14 musical year. And what a year it has been. Thanks to those of you who purchased raffle tickets – we are able to send two students to Jazz Camp in July, Adam Gill for his fourth year and Jacob Campbell for his first year. You’ll hear from them in our September issue. Bob Schulz and his Frisco Jazz Band will be here at the Elks on September 21st. We still don’t have any new information about the New Orleans being open by then, so we may have the band at another venue for the traditional Saturday evening gig. An even more important issue about the Schultz gig is we need your pledges to the Sponsorship Fund sent in to Carol Rippey now. Thanks to all of you who have sent pledges, and an even bigger thanks when all the pledge funds are in the bank. We can’t bring Bob and the band to Seattle without your support. A note about the CD’s you are donating – please don’t bring any “copies”, we are unable to sell them. Please only donate originals. That being said, thanks so much for donating, and keep them coming. Even our musicians each month are enjoying the opportunity to add to their collections. Hope to see many of you on the 15th for the New Orleans Quintet. And then, go have a wonderful summer and we’ll be together again in September for the Bob Schulz weekend. Cheers, Judy
