Electromagnets – n. a piece of iron with wire wound around it. It becomes a magnet when an electric current is passed through the wire.

squinted – v. past tense of squint; to close your eyes part way.

observe – v. to study something carefully.

crane – n. a large machine with a long arm that can be moved up and down and in a circle. Cables at

the end of the crane’s arm are used to lift and move heavy objects

hypothesis – n. something that is suggested as being true for the purposes of further investigation; a scientist makes a hypothesis and then he/she tests

it to see if it’s true.

positive – adj. having one of two opposite kinds of electric charge

negative – adj. having one of two opposite kinds of electric charge

practically – adv. nearly; almost

conclusion – n. plural of conclusion; something decided after thinking and experimenting

scientific method – n. The process a scientist uses to solve problems

terminal – n. either end of a battery, through which electricity is conducted
