GIAHC’s (Global Initiative Against HPV and Cervical Cancer, http://www.giahc.org) first screening program was initiated in the Kutch district of Gujarat, where Bhojay arvoday Trust Hospital and Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan (KMVS - a grass roots collective of rural women that has worked on public health issues for over two decades) put their efforts together and developed a cervical cancer-screening program in their community. Community health workers were trained in the screening procedure at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai and the Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai.

Furthermore, students from Yale and Harvard have spent time in Kutch to build the program. GIAHC feels much honored to be involved in the Kutch region and to work with its dedicated people. However, one of major challenges that it faces in the district is to recruit qualified personnel such as nurses and program coordinators who can supervise the work of the community health workers, and bring the program to international standards. * Compliments to KOJAIN Merit Scholarship Program by Tina Lapsia of Connecticut

Thank you very much for awarding me the KOJAIN Scholarship and I am very happy to know that you and the scholarship committee found me worthy of getting the award. Words cannot express how much this scholarship will help me in my college career.

I am currently studying at the University of Connecticut and my classes and extracurricular activities have been going well. I have kept up my involvement with my Indian community by joining ASHA for Education, the Indian Students Association, and the Husky Bhangra dance team. I also strive to keep on doing seva for the community by joining the build-On club I was in during high school and am in the Honors Council. Overall, I hope to maintain all of the qualities that you saw in my application that helped me win the scholarship throughout college. Once again, thank you very much for the scholarship! Please forward this email to the rest of the scholarship committee or please extend my thank you to them as well. Without the support of the Kachchhi community, I would not be the person I am today. Tina Lapsia, daughter of Jyoti & Prakash Lapsia of Trumbull, Connecticut (Village: Koday) was one of the Scholarship Winners during 2012. Advice from the Nature - Learn from the Nature Nature teaches us a lot. Only one has to be observant and think beyond the imagination. Nature has a beauty to enjoy, explore, learn and imagine with an open eyes and ears. There is a lot to learn from the Morning sunrise, evening sunset, flowing river, high mountain, wooded area, ocean and lakes. [The following was observed on the pictures hung on the walls at Sinoff Memorial Overlook & Musuem, Crater Lake, Oregon. Photos created by Ian Shamin] ADVICE from a MOUNTAIN *Reach for new heights *Rise above it all *There is beauty as far as the eye can see *Be uplifting and keep patience….Patience… patience… *Get to the Point *Enjoy the view Advice from a River *Go with the flow *Immerse yourself in nature, slow down and meander *Go around the obstacles. Be thoughtful of those downstream *Stay current. *The beauty is in journey.

Vinesh Vasanji Mamania, A Crusader and a se The maxim of Jainism is ‘Live and let live!’ It preaches non-violence and reiterates that ‘peaceful co-existence of all living ones’ should be the watchword of one and all for global welfare. It is against this background that the Vepary Swetamber Murti Pujak Jain Sangh, a sub-sect of the Jains, recently organised Ahimsa Summit, an exhibition of posters, 3D models and videos by Vinesh Vasanji Mamania in Chennai, Tamilnadu State. A businessman turned crusader, the Kutch-born and Mumbai-bred Mamania has a clear mission: “To rid society of vice; to create a beautiful, peaceful and love filled environment for all living beings.” Ahimsa, animal welfare and vegetarianism are Mamania’s mantras, as is evident from activities which include exhibitions, rallies, freeing captive animals, saving cows from slaughter and holding medical camps for cattle. He propagates vegetarianism, opposes abortion and works to create awareness against fatal diseases. Camps involving blood and eye donation are regular affairs. Drawing inspiration from the Bhoodan leader, Vinobha Bhave, Mamania has made ‘Vande Gou Matharam’ (“Salute to mother, mother cow and mother land”) his motto. Some of the posters have interesting captions, such as “Our pleasure, their pain. Why visit zoos?”, etc. Normally it takes approximately four months to prepare for an exhibition on a subject like this, as this involves interacting with experts and doing plenty of research. But the outcomes give me great satisfaction.” He has a permanent place to store the materials. His shows have impressed people from all walks of life, and many have been influenced by his philosophy, have reportedly turned vegetarian, and stopped using cosmetics, silk, and other such animal based products. Recipient of several accolades, Mamania is happy with the response being received.

The Art Of Giving

Rivers do not drink their own water, nor do tree eat their own fruit, nor do rain clouds eat the grains reared by them. The wealth of the noble is used solely for the benefit of others!

Even after accepting that giving is good and that one must learn to give, several questions need to be answered.

When to Give? ............... Now. How Much to Give?.........As Much as YOU Can. What to Give ?................Give with All Your Heart. To Whom to Give?...... ..Give without Being Judgmental. How to Give?...................With Grace and with a Feeling of Gratitude. Feeling after Giving?.......Never Regret Giving.

After Providing How Much For Heirs?........Enough to Do

Anything, but Not Enough To Do Nothing.
