I feel as though Jaguar Jumpstart has the potential to create successful college students as well as teaching the some tremendously good habits for fall semester- K

Connecting service learning with the classroom: English 1101

•  Dave Eggers’ article “Serve or Fail” and essay prompts: –  Have you done community service before this semester? If

yes, where and what did you do? –  What are your observations of your community service at the

Salvation Army? –  What points of Eggers do you agree/disagree with? Explain.

•  The final included: “Thinking about your service learning experiences, which ones did you enjoy most and why? What did you learn about yourself? What did you think of service learning being part of this program? (Service days were held at Salvation Army, Golden Harvest Food Bank, Boys and Girls Club).”

Connecting service learning with the classroom: Math 1001

•  The ratio of the number of volunteers at a food bank to the number of pounds of food stocked in one afternoon is 3:150. How many volunteers are needed to stock 1200 pounds of food in one afternoon?

•  At the Salvation Army car auction, Chris bid $1200 for a used car. Tom placed a bid on the same car 8% more than Chris’s bid. How much was Tom’s bid?

Classwork: Individual & Collaborative

I played around [in high school], which is why I had to complete the Jaguar Jumpstart program in the first place. Nevertheless, I made sure that I didn’t take the opportunity for granted. I took the time to learn skills applicable to succeeding during the fall semester – D

Tutoring, Workshops & Campus Visitors

I was surprised when I found out that, in the Jaguar Jumpstart program, we were required to stay until 4:00 in the afternoon for mandatory tutoring hours, but I quickly came to appreciate it because it forced me to get my work done - E

Together, we were able to give to the community’s needs and together we were able to develop our own needs such as teamwork and cultural diversity - C

Service Learning: Salvation Army Car Wash

I was too shy to talk to anyone until that first volunteer day. Washing cars was not only fun, it made me feel like I was part of the group. - A

Service Learning: Golden Harvest Food Bank My favorite experience would have to be golden harvest food bank. It was tedious work in a way but it gave us all an opportunity to laugh and bond while at the same time helping to feed those that are hungry in our community –E

Student Voice: Academics One quality of the program that I found really helpful was the small size. You really got to know your professor on a more personal level and understand what they are like. This also helps on the social level as well. It is easier to meet people when there is a more concentrated group – J This program had things that appealed to me: such as attentive and caring professors who are there for us day and night, service learning, tutoring resources and much more. I think the professors made my time at the Jaguar Jumpstart program worthwhile because they genuinely cared for us rather than a high school teacher who let us do whatever we pleased - V

Student Voice: Service Learning

The greatest part of this program was the community service every Friday. A lot of my classmates were hesitant to enjoy themselves while working, but I made myself very comfortable in every setting and did what I had to while having fun. It is a great thing to help those less fortunate, so being able to do that with my classmates is a great thing to me – A

Student Voice: Personal Growth

I think the service days were rich in experience if nothing more. They were also spiritually and materially beneficial to me and others. These experiences have done nothing but help me make a better me as a student transitioning into a career man – D
