One is understood to be in full knowledge whose every endeavor is devoid of desire for sense gratification. He is said by sages to be a worker for whom the reactions of work have been burned up by the fire of perfect knowledge.

POEMS/STORIES/ESSAYS

Journey to Inner World (Pancha Kosha) Anjana Chowdhury, Germantown, MD

According to Yoga, stress is an uncontrolled speed of thoughts. If stress is affecting only the thoughts, it is a psychological stress, where people are prone to get mental disorders like Depression, Anxiety Neurosis, and Bipolar Disorders etc. If the stress percolates to the

physical body, then people are susceptible to get physical diseases like Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus etc.

The Pancha Kosha Theory explains that stress originates in the Manomaya Kosha (mind)

and it disturbs the Pranamaya Kosha (bio-cosmic body) and percolates as a disease in the Annamaya Kosha (physical body). All medicines are working for the effect but not the cause.

Ancient sages have explored the depths of our being, and given us the knowledge of the

Pancha Kosha (five sheaths), that addresses every level of a human being. Kosa means a covering. The self is covered by five sheaths. This is explained as conversations between

Varuna and Bhrgu. It is followed by the knowledge from other scriptures and Upanishads.

Pancha Kosha(Five sheaths) comprises:

Annamaya Kosha (body level) – tension in the muscles Pranamaya Kosha (life force level) – disturbances / hyperactivity

Manomaya Kosha (mental level) – agitations, lack of concentration Vijnanamaya Kosha (intellectual level) – wrong notions Anandamaya Kosha (bliss) – it is full of harmony / there are no problems

Chirantana Issue 26, February 2011

Yoga helps us to go back to our nature, through a conscious way of

1. Relaxing at body level 2. Slowing down at life force level

3. Calming down at mental level 4. Wisdom at intellect level

5. Bliss & contentment at bliss level.

Dr. Nagendra (Vice-Chancellor of SVYASA (Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samasthana University) and President of the Vivekananda Yoga Research Foundation, Bangalore, India) explained that diseases start in the Manomaya kosa as Adhi and

percolate down to the Annamaya Kosha becoming Vyadhi. Unless the root cause is removed these ailments cannot be cured. Diseases are of two types. 1)Anadhija Vyadhi is

the name given to injuries, infection and toxins. Here the ailments are at a body level and therefore the treatment can be at the body level too, in the form of medicines, surgery or mantra.2) Stress leads to ‘Adhi’. Adhija Vyadhi is the name given to stress borne

diseases. Stress plays havoc with the immune system; in the case of diabetes, stress inhibits the production of insulin while in the case of cancer stress allows the uninhibited

growth of cells. Therefore Adhija Vyadhis cannot be cured by medicines. Here, the yoga therapy alone will help as it works at the level of the intellect and not just at the physical level. The integrated approach of yoga therapy works at all the levels to solve the Vyadhis

completely.

Yoga as a drugless therapy cleanses and balances a person's complete self, at all levels. Yogic Diet, Asana and Pranayama relax and strengthen the physical body. Basic regimens

and different Pranayama methods purify all the energy channels and steady the breath. Meditation techniques calm and stabilize the mind. Medical scientists are thoroughly investigating the physiological, metabolic and neuro-endocrinal changes of yoga, such as

the effect of yoga on glucose levels, hormones and neurotransmitters.

Apart from the evidence in medical research, yoga is highly rich in philosophical literature and thoughts. The concept of yoga and its philosophy has originated from a distant past

and has been followed for centuries with a systematic and holistic approach. Therefore, it is a complete prescription for the healthy body as well as mind, leading to a better quality of

life.

Yoga is not a religion, a philosophical doctrine nor mysticism. It is the wisdom of life. It is an experience. Yoga is the intelligent and the Self-conscious effort of man towards achieving universal existence. Yoga brings a message of hope to the forlorn, joy to the

depressed, strength to the weak and knowledge to the ignorant. Yoga is a means by which man can transcend human limitation and become the Cosmic Man moving

towards Anandamaya Kosha(bliss) from Annamaya Kosha (body level).
