Chopin
The ‘Raindrop prelude’ or ‘Prelude in Db Major’ is a piece by Chopin written in the
romantic period. The piece is in ternary form (!"# the $rst section bein% in the
tonic &ey# Db major# the second modulatin% to the enharmonic minor# C'# and
the third of course bac& in Db major. The main dierence between the and !
sections is that the melody switches from the ri%ht hand to the left and the
dominant pedal does the in)erse. lso# in the second section# there is a coda.
The te*ture of the piece is mainly homophonic with a dominant pedal all the way
throu%h. This sound simulates the raindrops. The only part of the piece that is
not homophonic is the end which is monophonic.
This piece is +uite hi%hly decorated with acciaccaturas and ornamentation such a
%race notes added to the melody. This accentuates the emotion of the piece
which is what was tryin% to be achie)ed in the romantic period# ,M-T-/. Thereare perfect cadences at the ends of each section.
n the section# the tempo is sostenuto and it has a melody dominated
homophonic te*ture. There is a sotto )oice mar&in% for the ! section where it
modulates to the enharmonic minor. The tempo is rubato for this section.
