oot For a ZoneSho

several of his books, Jack In s talks about shooting to hit a zone instead of a point. OOn any mal, there is an area of the vitals that canim an be covered with a circle. A hit anywheere within t area gives a high probability that of meat in the freezer. This system works best forr non-ngerous game; those that candan hurt you often require a different shot placement, for ample, a central nervous system hit that instexa antly disrupts the animal’s ability to ccome er you. So we’re not talkingafte about the “hurt you” critters.

e size of the “kill circle” depends on the size of the animal. For antelope, sheep, andThealler deer species, an 8-inch circle is asma good number. As the animals get larger, so doescircle. For an elk-size crthe itter it could be 14-18 inches.

n’t Waste a Flat Trajectory Don

one book Jack talked about meeting anotherIn o hunter who shot the 270 Winchesteer 130-rin load Jack used, but sighted his rifle dead-on grai at 100 yards. Jack’s reaction to tthis is t this sighting choice wasted much of thethat potential of the 270. He went on to sayy one

en I'm perched on the edge of Hells Canyon, glWhe assing for deer and elk, I alwayss reflectthe history and culture of thon t is vertical landscape. It's easy to understand why Chhief eph led his Nez Perce Tribe through this Jos canyon to escape the US Cavalry.

awestruck by the tenacity and persistence of I'm settlers who struggled to make a living in parched and unforgiving landscape. It dthis oesn't seem like there's enough grass to feed

ws or sheep in this mosaic of severely ancow gled pastures, let alone a place level ennough to d a homestead. It's hard tobuil imagine that a few hearty souls are still out there, sspending winter along the river feeding cowsthe and getting their mail once a week.

e hearty soul was Len Jordan who brought hiOne s young family into this canyon to rraise eep in the 1930's. Perhaps this was a sanctuarshe y from the economic rer alities of the Great pression. If you could make it here amongDep the rattlesnakes, the Great Depressioon might ve seemed like a piece of cake. He eventhav ually became an Idaho governor and then aS. Senator. U.S
