Dear Alumni and JKOMSF Donors

Thank you for your support. We are providing this issue by email and mail.

I am pleased to report that nearly two thirds of the graduates over the past four decades of LSU OMS-NO have either donated or pledged to the JKOMS Foundation. In addition several colleagues from LSU OMS-Shreveport, former faculty members of both LSU

programs, friends and companies have been generous. It is our hope that recent graduates over the past six years are now able to contribute.

Your generosity reflects dedication to our profession and the education you received and will help support the education of future LSU OMS residents. Your pledges and donations will be used to strengthen the residency program in many ways, such as

continuing education for the residents, research, support of faculty and resident pay lines, resident travel, equipment in the clinics and yourself when coming back for a Pearls course.

A few alumni have expressed interest in Legacy or Deferred Giving. The foundation enthusiastically supports this effort. Please contact any member of your Board for guidance and advice.

At the end of this year I will retire from the LSU OMS department. I have enjoyed the past 40 years working with Dr. Kent and the other full and part time faculty to educate the residents at EKL Hospital and now Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and Clinics. My very best and thanks to all.

Message from OMS Alumni Association

Dear Fellow Alumni,

I wish I had more to tell you about the activities of the LSU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Alumni Association but alas, not much has happened since last year. While we have had some significant growth of the JKOMSF, the Alumni Association has really not taken on its own identity. We would really like to have more independent contributions from individuals. I

am no longer going to actively solicit help so if you would like to participate I am grateful to accept whatever you would like to contribute.

A $100 dues assessment is included with this mailing and I would like to have as many people participate in this as possible. In January we sent out a letter from the Foundation to collect dues and had only four responses. Theresa Biggerstaff, Amy Brooks, Steve Widner, and John Provenzano all stepped up voluntarily without being asked other than through that notice. Now, I would like to formally ask you to contribute. Why? Changes in the residency program and its funding have really left very

little discretionary funds available to the residents. This is very notable when it comes to certain activities such as the fishing trip, an annual tradition, as well as support for the other group activities. New ethic laws prohibit vendors from donating as they did in the past, and getting money out of the chairs is no longer feasible. It is not possible to run some expenses through the LSU Foundation.

With significant participation from the alumni we can collect between $10,000 and $20,000 dues which would be adequate to handle a lot of these ancillary expenses for residents. Any contributions are appreciated and will be put to good use. Our current balance in our First Citizens Bank Account is $2,217.03.

I wish you all a happy holiday season and a prosperous 2015. When I look back on my training I feel that it was the best four years of my life. I know many of you feel the same way. Let’s do our small part to make sure that the current residents, and future residents, feel the same way.

Dale J. Misiek, DMD Clinical Professor LSU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery President, LSU OMS Alumni Association

Message from JK OMS Foundation Secretary Treasurer

Greetings from the Department of the Treasury.

This past year the JKOMS Foundation has continued to grow at a steady pace. The Board of Directors elected to sponsor both the JKOMSF Pearls and the LSU OMS Review Course. In addition, the Board allocated $15,000 to sponsor a student station for the pre-clinical lab renovation project at the LSU Dental School. The

foundation will be recognized on the station and in the lab once it’s completed. This highlights the support of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the JKOMSF among the dental students in a clinical setting on a daily basis.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Lynn Phillipe has joined the foundation as a new donor at the Gold level. Lynn has served

our profession well maintaining an excellent private practice and serving on the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry for ten years and as President of the Board in 2009.

Our investment gains over the last three years have produced a 31% return on investment. Our current balance stands at $1.2 million.

I want to thank all of the members of the JKOMSF for their commitment to our specialty and to the LSU OMS program, which provided us with the education and training that led to the incredible success that we have all enjoyed.

I wish all of you the very best this holiday season and a peaceful and prosperous 2015.

Message from the Old ChiefAccolades and Appreciation – Our own private practitioner Eric Geist, DDS has just completed his year as President of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Congratulations Eric - job well done. I have it on good authority that Eric was an outstanding president, accomplished so much for OMS, and provided leadership to the specialty beyond which has been seen in many years. Actually this was expected as was seen when he was President of ABOMS six years ago. And G. E. Ghali, DDS, MD, FACS, chairman of OMS at LSU – Shreveport, has also just completed his year as President of ABOMS. Ghali provided sterling leadership to ABOMS since he is the pinnacle of OMS education and has tirelessly fought for recognition of ABOMS with American Board of Medical Specialties. Our hat is off to two past LSU graduates, Chris Haggerty, DDS, MD and Rob Laughlin, DDS whose textbook on Operative OMS with 50 contributors will soon be published. And finally, your old chief received the AAOMS Presidential Achievement Award for long-standing contribution to our specialty during the opening ceremony of the AAOMS annual meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Administration Changes - Since the last JKOMSF Newsletter, August 2013 and brief letter, January 2014, the LSU OMS department has undergone leadership changes. Dan Spagnoli, DDS, MS, PhD, who served as the department head the past two years and moved the department forward at lightning speed with hiring of new faculty will be moving back to North Carolina. Thank you, Dan, for all your efforts in leading us forward and rebuilding the department faculty. We wish you much success and hope you will return often to lecture to the residents and faculty.

In July, 2014, John Neary, DDS, MD, FACS was appointed Interim department head. Dr. John Neary received a B S in environmental science and engineering in 1982 from Purdue U. and earned a DDS, cum laude, in 1986 from Ohio State U. He completed his OMS residency at Charity Hospital in 1990 and graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1992. He then completed a general surgery internship and a fellowship in Facial Cosmetic Surgery with Dr. Michael Kinnebrew at The Facial Surgery Center of the Gulf South. John is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and serves on the Board of Purdue University. After 20 years of private practice in Hudson, Ohio with emphasis on cosmetic, orthognathic, and reconstructive surgery and a part-time academic appointment at Case-Western Reserve University, John joined the LSU OMS department November, 2013. He enjoys water sports and being with his wife, Donna, and their three sons. John Neary and Dan Spagnoli were LSU OMS residents together. They have both had outstanding careers and LSU OMS will continue with excellent leadership from John Neary going forward

Also in July, Mark Welch, DDS, a long time professor in both the

OMS and Anatomy departments, assumes the program director position. Jon Perenack, DDS, MD, who served as our program director for ten years, will continue on in a half time faculty position with resident teaching in New Orleans and in Baton Rouge where his private practice is the basis of cosmetic surgery instruction for the residents. Thank you, Jon, for a decade of leadership and residency education as program director.

Dr. Mark Welch was born in Kansas, and has been in Louisiana since 1965. He received his BS at Tulane University in 1973 and DDS from LSU School of Dentistry in 1977. His honors included O.K.U. and C. Edmund Kells membership and number one ranking in his dental school class. Mark completed his OMS residency at LSU and Charity Hospital in 1980. He is a diplomate of American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and member of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, and International College of Maxillofacial Surgery. Mark was in private practice in Lafayette, Louisiana, from 1980-2009, practicing in full scope in oral & maxillofacial surgery with emphasis on orthognathic and temporomandibular modalities. Simultaneously he has been a part time faculty member with LSU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Anatomy, becoming full time assistant professor in 2009. His primary teaching responsibilities include resident supervision in all aspects of surgery at the University Hospital and Advanced Oral Surgery course for the dental students. Mark is married to Conni and has two children and three grandchildren. He enjoys playing the guitar during his spare time..

Continuing Education - In February, your OMS department determined it was best to administer the delivery of C E courses through the combined efforts of JKOMSF and our own faculty rather than through the Continuing Education Department (CDE). Dr. Kent continued the direction of both the Pearls III Course in April and the Review Course in August. Dan Spagnoli put together several renowned speakers (Brian Farrell, Joel Berger, Gordon Brady, and prosthodontists) for an excellent educational experience on virtual surgical planning for orthognathic surgery and dental implants, and for dental implant therapy using guided implant reconstruction, full arch reconstruction with immediate loading, immediate vs. traditional loading, and attachment selection of overdentures. There were 110 registered OMS and residents at Pearls III this past April and the course was also an economic success for the JKOMSF. JKOMSF donors realized registration savings and vendor support was excellent. The OMS Review Course, now in its 41st year, was given in mid August

because of a substantially reduced hotel rate and the opportunity to pick up ABOMS recertification candidates. Attendance was down by over one third as there were only 50 attendees and 20 of our residents. The sale of previous course videos the past several years by CDE and recent trends of online education seemed responsible for the decreased attendance. The Cosmetic Course was cancelled because of low attendance and costs of the cadaver laboratory. We are currently rethinking the course format and scheduling for 2015.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Pearls IV, Surgical Pathology and Reconstruction – As you know, the Pearls course has become a wonderful venue for alumni to return and celebrate at the French Quarter Fest and offers the very best in continuing education. Pearls IV will be held at the J W Marriott on Canal Street, April 10-11, 2015 with a gala reception the evening before. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PROGRAM BROCHURE. Early

registration is highly recommended as our block of rooms is guaranteed only through March 19. After that hotel rooms will be difficult to find. This years course features three outstanding clinicians (Eric Carlson, Lionel Gold, and Tom Williams) with 125 years of experience in surgical pathology and reconstruction, two pathologists (Lionel Gold and Kitrina Cordell) our own John Neary on Sleep Apnea and Mike Zide on Skin Lesions. This promises to be the most exciting Pearls course ever. JKOMSF donors will have registration discount as usual. See you all there! Jack

Message from the LSU OMS Chairman

See the brochure and mark your calendar for Pearls IV Course

After 20 years of private/part-time academic practice in Ohio and some arm twisting from Dr. Kent and Spagnoli, I returned to LSU last November to realize my dream of teaching residents and participating in an Academic setting full time. What I thought would be days of just going to the operating room with the residents, has now turned into a real job, as I accepted the interim chairman position in July. While a resident, I never thought Dr. Kent looked stressed. So either he let this monstrous responsibility roll off his back or he was really good at it. The department could not be in much better shape considering what environment we work in with healthcare politics as well as university politics. I recently received a very nice letter from the chairman of the medical school admissions committee. He said that he was totally impressed with the caliber of our applicants and with the fact that all of our applicants thought that LSUOMS was the best program in the country right now. Our faculty includes two fellowship trained cosmetic surgeons, two fellowship trained cancer/microvascular surgeons, two fellowship trained craniofacial surgeons, and one fellowship trained OMS/ anesthesiologist. Our faculty interact well and are excelling at training the best OMS surgeons in the country.

I recently entered into a long term affiliation with the University of Leon, Nicaragua. This was initiated by Dr. Michael Kinnebrew who arranged the introductions. As a result, Dr. Kim, myself, and two residents traveled to Leon, Nicaragua and saw 70 patients in a clinic on Monday and by Friday had performed surgery on 22 patients in a facility that is about 10 notches below old Charity. These cases included 4 Goldenhar’s, 2 Rhombergs, many cleft

patients, and several cancer cases. This exposure is invaluable for the residents and will continue with at least 2 trips per year.

We are almost ready to move into our new hospital with completion set for December 24, 2014 and move in commencing on January 2, 2015. The move in will be staged over 3 months and we will begin seeing patients in the new hospital in April 2015. This has required an extensive meeting schedule to facilitate the move as well as protect LSUOMS interests. I have represented our interests at every high level meeting and as a result, LSUOMS has been selected as one of 10 “centers of excellence” that the new University Medical Center at New Orleans will promote as a destination specialty.

I truly hope you all can make it to New Orleans for Pearls IV in April. It is a great opportunity to see your old friends from training and check out what is going on with the LSUOMS program.

Having taken over the program directorship in mid-July, I’m beginning to get the hang of things. Much thanks to Dr. Perenack for all his hard work in the past and thus making my transition easier. I would like to congratulate last year’s finishing residents: Curtis Bishop, Matthew Fowlkes, and Cameron Cavola. They are all now in private practice and I’m sure their communities are glad to have them.

We have just completed our interview process for next year and have some excellent candidates. All of our applicants continue

to be impressed with our program. With the addition of our new faculty members, we continue to grow our reputation. The applicants were particularly impressed with the number of our fellowship trained faculty members. I believe we have one of the best and most diverse faculties in the country. The applicants were also impressed with our case load from 2013-2014. With our Baton Rouge case load increasing after moving to OLOL; I anticipate our reputation growing even greater. I will try to keep everyone up to date with the program in future alumni newsletters.
