Limerick City Gallery of Art welcomes youto the second edition of Presence, featuringtwenty one artists associated with Limerick. This annual series of Christmas exhibitionscelebrates the wonderful range of talent anddiversity in contemporary Irish art.

Limerick City offers many opportunities toartists; to study, live, work and exhibit. Earlyin the selection process last year it becameobvious that to represent the city a series ofexhibitions was necessary. In this year’sPresence there is an amazing array ofdiffering styles and approaches to Painting,Drawing and Photography. As well as artistsbased here in Limerick there are artists livingand working in Dublin, Belfast, London andBerlin. The range of the artists’ experiencesand activities are extraordinary.

The influential educational ethos of LimerickSchool of Art and Design is apparent in thisexhibition. It is wonderful to include severalof our senior artists Tom Fitzgerald, CharlesHarper and Jack Donovan, all of whom havehad a significant role in their careers at theLimerick School of Art and who have madeimportant contributions to Irish Art.The exhibition also features the work ofLecturers Alan Keane, Suzannah O’Reilly andrecent graduates Jennifer O’Connor andDave Fortune.

International opportunities available to Irishartists have markedly increased. BothAndrew Kearney and Anne Ryan havecarved significant careers in the London artworld.

Other artists with growing or establishedinternational careers include Tom Molloy,Enda O’Donoghue and Michele Horrigan.

Successful Limerick based artists includeRobert Ryan, Dave Lilburn, Kate Hennessy,Lorraine Wall and Brian MacMahon.Wewelcome the young Cork based artistMartin Finnin, whose work is much soughtafter in the Dublin auction houses.

The broad range of the exhibition may beillustrated by reference to three artists:TomShortt, well-known Limerick teacher hasincluded several photographs documentingLimerick contemporary youth culture, NestaFitzgerald displays a series of quirkyillustrations of the City and emerging painterEmma Berkery presents abstractexplorations of colour and form.

Presence is displayed in conjunction withSeeing Georgian Limerick, a record of fourphotographers’ responses to our GeorgianHeritage.Together these exhibitions give asample of contemporary Irish and Limerickart practice.

Limerick City Gallery of Art would like tothank all of the artists for participating in thisshowcase exhibition.
