Eight Churches from The Episcopal Diocese of Florida join together for a Special Confirmation, Commitment to Christian Service and Holy Communion Service An impressive group of 150 laity and clergy from eight Episcopal churches in Putnam County met under a tent on the grounds of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, Crescent City on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 2p.m. for a service of Holy Eucharist with confirmation led by The Rt. Rev. Samuel Johnson Howard, Bishop of Florida. This gathering might be seen as the first significant event in fulfilling a vision for the future of these churches. This is because during this service, immediately following Confirmation, lay members from participating churches came forward to profess before the Bishop their commitment to service as called and trained lay ministers. This dedicated group of lay leaders agreed to serve their congregations in the respective roles of Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Eucharistic Visitor, and Provisional Worship Leader. The vision for the Putnam County Episcopal Churches (PCECs) Licensed Lay Ministries is best articulated by The Rev. Dr. Bob Marsh, Priest in Charge of St, Mark’s and St. Mary’s (both in Palatka) who, together with The Rev. Rick Westbury, Rector of Christ Church, Ponte Vedra Beach and The Rev. Diane Reeves, Vicar of St. Andrew’s, Interlachen, put in place this idea designed to provide effective ministry in the Putnam County area where churches might struggle in the future to have the benefit of a full-time clergy person in each individual church. Fr. Marsh writes, “Since the first congregation in Putnam County was established in 1853 - St Mark’s - the effect of the economy has been acute. The effects of the recession of 2008 are still being felt. We want to preserve the congregations we have in a sustainable fashion so we will be positioned for growth in the long run. This must be done while acknowledging the fact that these historic churches would be hard-pressed to afford full-time clergy.” Fr. Marsh concludes, “The strategy is one of fully utilizing the Canons of the Episcopal Church to develop licensed lay ministers to complement clergy availability and maintain Eucharistic-centered worship.” The commitment to Christian service that these lay leaders professed before Bishop Howard on Sunday afternoon was essentially a development of the commitment each of us makes in the Baptismal Covenant at our baptism when we promise to follow and serve the Lord Jesus Christ; to “continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread” and to “proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ.” Their commitment service was the culmination of months of studying the Bible, the Prayer Book and other appropriate materials to learn for their respective ministries – all under the guiding hand and experience of Mtr. Diane Reeves.
