To mark the end of the year we decided to take a trip to Lightwater Valley. We had all spent the better part of a year using our weekends to study this course. There were tough times and easy times. Difficult times and amazing times. So, out of compassion, our teacher left the task of organising an end of year trip to us, which was a good exercise for us to learn organization skills. Having spent the last year developing ourselves and learning,it was the perfect time for us to take on some responsibility. The trip was great fun and a perfect balance of Deen and Dunya. Being able to take the lessons we learned, such as how to interact with others, the etiquettes of eating and how to read Salah and practically apply them in such an environment was a gratifying experience. Whether it was something simple like smiling because its Sunnah, or to lower the gaze when necessary. Only on a trip like this, out in the world, can we fully see how much progress we have all made. We also enjoyed the rides, had fun going on the same ones again and again, feeding the birds and watching them eat. For ourselves, we took our own food and also enjoyed some slushi drinks from there. The hot sun was perfect and the theme park

not too busy. All in all, a brilliant day spent with some brilliant people. We read Salah on the grass and ate under the sun. No doubt, this brought us all together and being in such a relaxed atmosphere helped us to ponder over and enjoy what we had been through over the last year. We all started off as individuals and strangers, but through this course we all have gained a better understanding of our religion and who we are as Muslims, individually and collectively, and with the final lessons culminating in a trip to Lightwater Valley, we end our first year as brothers. Seeing how far we have all come since the first lesson is amazing. Looking back I never ever thought I would be in such a good place and can only hope for better things to come next year. I am truly grateful for everything. Shoaib Basharat, Diploma Student, Nelson

Issue No. 2| Ramadan 1435 CONTENTS

Shaytan makes good deeds look like a mountain to climb, something difficult to do and attain. When in fact doing good deeds is the opposite to this notion. For example, people tend to think, especially in the UK, these days fasting will be difficult as it is long days. This is not true, as there is the same 24 hours in a day as there is in winter. Only thing is the sleeping hours are different. Where in winter a person may have slept 7/8 hours in one straight long nap. In the summer this is slightly different, has person will be sleeping 3/4 hours before going to work. Then after work, as he will be fasting until Magrib, he can sleep another few hours to make up for the loss earlier. Then wake up and pray Asr this will compensate anyone's lack of sleep. It is mentioned in the books that the pious would say 'Endeavour, endeavour, endeavour, to change your routine' in Ramadan. Meaning, if people have a set routine to which they are accustom to outside of Ramadan, then in Ramadan a person should change this for betterment. If the usual habitual routine of someone is, they commit sins, pray and then do sins again. Or, If a person has the habit to spend time in front of the TV, kitchen or couch all day. Then he should cut this routine especially in Ramadan. It is only then a person will have the upper hand against the big devils as they have been locked up in Ramadan.

    THE MONTH OF ENDEAVOUR

  • Issue No. 1 QURANIC AYAH OF THE MONTH

"The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So

whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and

[wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful." (2:185)

    COOKING UP A STORM

Throughout the year, we participated in cooking classes every Friday. We have learnt many traditional recipes that will be useful to us now

and in the future also. To name a few, they are for cuisine such as Chicken Boneless Curry, Lady Fingers Curry, Kababs and Chapatis.

Our head chef gave us detailed instructions from the onset and ensured

that each student returned home well-equipped and with new-found confidence in their cooking skills. To the delight of our parents, from

the first day, we were enthusiastic to try out these recipes in our own homes.

Not only have we been trained in the art of preparing both Asian and

English delicacies but in order for us to be well-rounded chefs, we were also taught various finishing techniques for the meals and desserts we

produced. This has allowed us to understand the importance of the presentation of each dish we serve.

In order for each student to identify their area of development, our

dishes were tasted by a non-bias audience of volunteers from another year group. This allowed us to gain some first hand experience and for

them to join in and have a glimpse at one of their next year extra-curricular activities.

Overall, these weekly cooking classes have been an invaluable

experience whilst being an exciting and much-anticipated end to a week of lessons.

    RAMADHAN

Recitation of the Holy Quran as much as possible, as this is A month of mercy and forgiveness which has been generously bestowed upon us, where each deeds reward is multiplied by seventy times! Make the most of it now; this treasured jewel isnt here for long. As we continue to journey through this rare and honourable month, that we are lucky to once again be present for Distinctively, we see our supplications and worship increasing with the will of Allah. Hitting targets in our prayers which we once thought were unimaginable. Amidst the prayers we see the air clouded with joy and happiness, the bond of the Ummah once again shining through, together as one we unlock the gates of places we never even imagined. Near the sad ending of this rewarding month, we have to ensure to never forget the lessons we derive, not just that we fasted from dawn to dusk each day.

    Welcome O Ramadhan!

    ARE YOU READY?

Are you ready to die? If not, how much time do you need? What is a good deed that you often do? What about the sins you commit daily? Is there any person you owe an apology? In 24 hours you are about to die. What will you do? 10 years after you die, what do you think people will

remember you for? 10 years after you die what would you like people to

remember you for? Have you chosen a person who will wash your body? Do you have a list of the 40 people who are going to pray

on you? Which of your friends is going to gather those 40 people? Where do you want to be buried? Have you chosen the people who will carry your body? Which people would you like to be resurrected with?. Which friend is going to visit your grave to pray for you

when everyone forgets you? Who do you want to be present in your final moments? Do you have the money to pay for the cost of your grave?

If not, how do you plan to arrange it? Do you have any debts? Who will pay them on your

behalf? Do you have a continuous charity? If not, how do you plan

to arrange it? Who would you give your books to after you die? What are you going to do with 1/3 of your inheritance

money? Who is the most important person you want to meet after

you die? What are you going to say to him/her? What is the 1st thing you will say to Allah (if you have the

chance)? What have you spent your life doing? (Summarise in 1

paragraph) What did you do in the time of your youth? (Summarise in

3 points) Do you earn halal money? How are you spending it? Now, do you think you are ready for death?

    SubhanAllah!

All these questions yet we dont have an answer. If we cannot

answer to ourselves, how can we expect to answer to Allah (SWT) when we are required to account for our every last deed? When we must explain how much of the time that

Allah, the Supreme, has granted to us we spent in striving to please Him? The truth of the matter is that we will not be

able to if we have spent the majority of our lives in a state of heedlessness, a state of sin.

We dont know when death will come to us. That information is with none but our Lord. However, no one of us is can deny that death will come to us eventually so until then, why not

use this life to gain as many rewards as we can to help us get closer to the Almighty?

Let us take lesson from the creation of Allah birds cannot fly

until their wings are fully ready to support them. Similarly, nor can we become closer to Allah until we have the support

mechanism of good deeds performed with complete sincerity. Furthermore, the bird that uses more power when flapping its wings will reach it's destination far sooner that

that bird which does not exert the same efforts. What we can learn from this is, our increase of righteous deeds with a

sincere heart has a direct correlation with the amount of time that is taken to reach our ultimate aim the Closeness and

    Pleasure of Allah Azawajul.

    SPOT THE DIFFERENCE!

  • AL JAAMIAH MUHAMMIDIYAH Issue No. 2| Ramadan 1435

As we all know, this Ramadan is the hardest. The days are at their longest and weather at its warmest. We must last

without food and yet carry on with our everyday routines, whether that be school, work or looking after our families. The

fourth of the five pillars of Islam, we must keep our fasts in order to please Allah and be proper Muslims. Although

Ramadan brings hardship on us, it brings us closer together. As an Ummah, we all suffer through hunger and thirst together. Although it may feel like it at times, hunger is not the main point of us fasting: in fact it is our struggle to carry out our

religious duties through perseverance which is accounted for. If we dont pray our five daily salahs at the least, then what is the point in fasting? Rather it is just starving yourself and you

    gain no virtue.

How do we suppress our hunger? When hungry, remember Allah and why you are hungry.

Remember those who are less fortunate than you; they suffer far more than you fasting on a more regular basis. To pass time, many people keep themselves occupied with their

religious duties and work. Help your parents. Many people often forget that they are not the only ones in hunger, our

parents provide us with everything we have, but do they get the thanks they deserve? Do we give our parents the least

amount of hassle that we can? Ramadan gives us many opportunities to be forgiven and become better. Remember,

when the months of Ramadan starts, the gates of Hell are closed and the gates of Heaven are open.

What else does Ramadan bring us?

Whoever prayed at night (in the month of Ramadan) out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his

past sins will be forgiven. Allah has provided us with so much opportunity to be forgiven for our sins, why waste it? Its only once a year that this opportunity comes and we dont know whether well live to the next Ramadan. We should pray for

forgiveness of our sins and for others. We should pray to Allah in gratitude and ask for help.

Ramadan also brings us patience through fasting and we also learn to develop good habits while we try to pass time.

Reading a Para of the Quran every day of the holy month means that we can complete it before Eid, and we can also get into a good habit of reading regularly. At the end of Ramadan we can hope to gain more piety and closeness to our friends and families. We have Eid to look forward to and new clothes

to wear for the occasion. Although Ramadan is a time of struggle, at the end there is a reward!
