“St. Paul’s cares about veterans.”

This sentiment was heard and felt throughout the

Memorial Day ceremony at St. Paul’s Community Care

Center.

Well attended by more than 50 St. Paul’s supporters,

including residents, participants and their families, the

morning ceremony was a heartfelt tribute to the

sacrifices of our country’s military service men and

women.

Highlighting the event was keynote speaker, Retired U.S.

Air Force Col. Joe Craver, who spoke of his 26-plus years

in the service that included a tour in Vietnam—and 247

flight missions in which the C-123 cargo planes he piloted were hit more than 500 times

by bullets and artillery. “With all humility, I believed I was the best pilot there ever was,” said Joe. “But I’m not

alone. All pilots think they are, for if you are engaged with an enemy, there is only a winner and a loser. Only

winners come home.”

Stewart Gaddy, U.S. Navy (Retired) and St. Paul’s staff member,

served as emcee for the ceremony, which started with an invocation

by Chaplain Babs France. An official welcome salute between Joe

and Stewart had the children from St. Paul’s Child Care entranced,

while Adele, Senior Day participant, sang a touching a cappella

rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. CJ Carlo, in a touching salute

presented to a silent audience, read the names of those St. Paul’s

resident veterans who passed away this past year, signifying each

with a solemn ring of a bell. Honoring veterans on this day is always

truly a heartfelt mission at St. Paul’s.

Yes, St. Paul’s cares about veterans. We salute you all!

Supportive Housing Presentation Piques Interest

St. Paul’s Senior Services recently hosted Simonne

Ruff from the Corporation for Supportive Housing and

Tricia Tasto Levien from Wakeland Development for

the second in a series of presentations about the

partnerships between St. Paul’s PACE and

supportive housing developers. More than 30 guests

attended to learn how these housing projects are

financed.

St. Paul’s PACE has partnered with three agencies in

the past six years to bring supportive housing to

near-homeless PACE seniors – Parker-Kier in 2011,

Celadon in 2015, and Talmadge Gateway in 2017.

Collectively, these senior communities will provide

130 PACE participants with a home. This recent

presentation explored how these housing

developers find funding for these projects and

partner with like-minded organizations.

“It’s so fascinating to see how these deals come

together,” said Pat Kreder, St. Paul’s Board

member. “People who have been homeless need a

lot of health care services to be successful in their

home. It’s really wonderful to hear that St. Paul’s is

taking the lead in San Diego as the premiere

program that provides these support services.”

How You Can Support Supportive Housing

If you’re interested in supporting the Talmadge

Gateway program, St. Paul’s is accepting gifts to

sponsor 59 apartments. The apartment

sponsorship gifts will be used to purchase furniture,

The Heart of Giving: Joe Craver If you ask Joe Craver what inspires his

support of St. Paul’s Senior Services, he

will tell you “plain and simple: it’s the

mission.”

When he met St. Paul’s CEO Cheryl

Wilson at a Rotary meeting years ago,

he was immediately taken by her passion

and vision in caring for seniors. “She

leads by example, she paints the picture,

and people care about what she has to

say,” says Joe. ”Cheryl inspires the work

and I am proud to join her in that mission.”

When asked to serve on the board of directors, Joe

said it was a natural decision. “Even though I am

‘retired’ and serve on some 14-odd other boards, I

am drawn in by all of the people of St, Paul’s — the

staff, the volunteers, and especially all of the seniors

we serve. It is a privilege to be part of this group.”

In addition to serving on St. Paul’s Board, Joe has

also generously donated to the annual LUV Gala

auction by offering a luxury yacht excursion (see

details below).

A Phoenix native, Joe was named “Mr. San Diego”

by the Rotary Club in 2010. At Arizona State

University he fell in love with both Rayma-Lew

Neeb, an ASU professor’s daughter, and the U.S. Air

Force — he married the first and

enlisted in the second.

Joe, a retired Colonel, served in the

Pentagon’s procurement office. He is

also a decorated combat veteran, having

earned a Silver Star, Legion of Merit,

Distinguished Flying Cross for Gallantry,

Distinguished Flying Cross for Aerial

Achievement, four Air Medals, Bronze

Star and the Purple Heart.

While in the military, Craver also

earned an MBA from Stanford. Upon retiring from

the Air Force in 1978, he and Rayma-Lew returned

to San Diego to found Galaxie Defense Marketing, a

firm that helps with defense contracts.

Joe has dedicated more than 25 years to community

service, which includes San Diego’s most influential

cultural and civic organizations. Among his many

roles, he has served as chairman of the San Diego

Convention and Visitors Bureau, Work Force

Partnership, and the San Diego Regional Chamber of

Commerce, in addition to chairman of the board of

the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

From May of 2007 until January of 2013, Craver

guided the American Red Cross of San Diego/

Imperial Counties as CEO.
