Cornwall.Wehadthepleasureofsupplyingthemwithasetof

men'sblades,whichwerewellreceivedbyRame.

TheBritanniaNavalCollegeorderedtwosetsthatyeartogo

withtheirnewboatsandPeterMartinourmastercraftman

attendedthelaunchoftheirnewPilotGigboatsinSeptember

2002,werehemetKevinPyneofDartmouthGigClub.They

discussedthepossiblyofSuttonsmaking30AdmiraltyOars

fortheDartmouthRoyalRegatta,whichweweredelightedto

provide.

Sincethenwehavecontinuedtoworkcloselywithgigclubs

aroundtheUKandthroughourresearchandliaisonswiththe

clubswearenowinapositiontoofferboththeJuniorsand

Ladiesteamsofrowerstheirownspecifiedoars.Thishas

provedtobeabeneficialmoveforthesportandenablesthe

teamstoutilise/exploittheirstrengthintoapositiverowing

action.

JSuttonisdelightedtobepartofthisexcitingtraditional

growthsport,whichisaweinspiringtowatchaswellastake

partin.Wearealwayscontinuallylookingatwaystoimprove

ourknowledgeandbyworkingwiththeclubsweaimto

providethebestthereis.

WewouldalsoliketotakethisopportunitytothankJohn

Corkforthereintroductionintothiswonderfulworldof

traditionalgigrowing.

committee of which I am a member to investigate a

replacementoarforthestandardadmiraltypatentheavyboat

whalertypeoar,whichhaschangedlittleinthepasthundred

years.

I knew Peter Martin Of Suttons by reputation and met him

inpersonwhenhecamedowntotheDarttowatchtheroyal

navelcollegewhohadjustreceivedasetofSuttonspilotgig

oars to participate in The Annual Lay Up Race held in

memoryofmylatewife.

I was very impressed by the standard of workmanship in

theseoars.Pilotgigrowinghaslongbeenafavouritesportof

mineandIinvitedPetertomeetupwithmeatmystorethe

followingdaytodiscussthewaytheheavyboatoarcouldbe

adapted to better suit to our specific needs and importantly

strengthenedatthebaseoftheloomwhichupuntilnowhad

beenaweakness.

MyrecommendationtoourregattaCommitteethatwemake

an initial purchase of thirty blades was accepted. So I made

an appealed to past rowers and the townsfolk in general to

help me finance the oars and offered to have the oars sign

written with the sponsors names should they chose to

purchaseone.InalittleoveraweekIamhappytosayallthe

oarswherepaidfor.

TheSuttonoarscameinontime,onpriceandofaveryhigh

quality.Theywereusedforthefirsttimesuccessfullyatthis

year'sRoyalregattaandwithnobreakage's".
