Jamile, Clifford Sonny / 1937-2007 Oahu residents and businesses knew Clifford Sonny Jamile as a conservationist who urged them to save water one glassful at a time. As chief engineer of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, Jamile persuaded restaurants not to serve water to customers unless requested, and householders to let their lawns

Page 6: J Rita Jr., oseph Costa May 29, 2007 · Ghost Church. Call after 10 a.m. Burial: noon at Holy Ghost Catholic Cemetery. (Honolulu Star Bulletin 17 January 2007) Jacinto, Alejandro

survive with less watering. Jamile spearheaded conservation efforts and fostered preservation of watersheds based on the Hawaiian ahupuaa system during his seven-year tenure as manager of the island water system. He died March 10 in the Queen's Medical Center at age 69. He retired in 2004 after more than 40 years with the water department."He made us good stewards of the land," said Carol Costa, former director of the city Department of Customer Services. "He did beautiful public service announcements with practical advice, like wash your car on the grass. People could see he was knowledgeable." Under Jamile's leadership, the Board of Water Supply launched the Water for Life conservation program to create awareness that water is not an infinite resource, a message for everyone from youths to the agricultural users. "He was a very strong voice to preserve water resources, to be stewards, never use more than we need," Costa said. She recalled Jamile talking at city Cabinet meetings under former Mayor Jeremy Harris. "He told us how long it took water to get from the clouds to our faucet -- a whole generation. He made it real and understandable. People would hang on his words when he told stories. He was especially concerned about protecting the watersheds around the island." Alika Jamile said his brother "started at the basement level and worked himself up through the ranks to become chief engineer. He was an intelligent engineer and he got along with people. He was very calm. He shared his ideas with his fellow workers; he was a consensus builder." Clifford Jamile was the oldest of seven and a Kamehameha Schools senior when their father died. "He took over the responsibility," said Alika. "We were a poor family. We lived in Papakolea. We had to work at various jobs to meet the necessities. Cliff would be the one to spearhead what we were to do. He was the planner." He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, N.Y., and served two years at sea before returning to Hawaii. As the father of eight children, he volunteered with Pacific Palisades Teen Club, Little League baseball, Pop Warner football, Cub Scouts and as Pearl City High School junior varsity and varsity baseball assistant coach. He is survived by wife Melva; sons Parker "Sid," Kelii, Kala, Moku and Kamee; daughters Poochie Paulino, Tweedles Hanzawa and Kekaulike Jamile; brothers Alika, Clinton, Winston and Clem; sisters Tiare Miyasato and Jessica Santiago Lopez; 31 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Janes-Brown, Elizabeth (1941-2007) Elizabeth Janes-Brown wrote people and entertainment columns for Maui newspapers and acted in community theater productions on the Valley Isle but was widely known statewide for her reports on Hawaii Public Radio. Janes-Brown, also known as Liz Janes and Betty Green, died Monday on the Valley Isle after a nine-year battle with cancer. She was 66. Janes-Brown, born in Halesworth, England, moved to the United States after her father died overseas during World War II and her mother remarried an American who had been stationed in England with the Army Air Corps. She settled on Maui in 1960 and became a teacher at Seabury Hall, an actress in community theater, and a writer and radio personality. Janes-Brown was a people columnist who wrote "Niele" for the Maui Sun, a morning talk-show host and news director for KNUI Radio, and staff writer and entertainment columnist who wrote "Let's Talk" for the Maui News. "There was never a negative bone in her body that I saw," said David Hoff, editor of the Maui News. "She showed a lot of courage in her last years, battling the illness." and acted in a number of leading roles -- one of her most memorable in 2003 was a professor stricken with cancer, in Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Wit." Rosenfeld said Janes-Brown, who was an on-air news stringer reporting information from the Maui News, had quite a following on the Valley Isle. Rosenfeld said whenever Janes-Brown participated in a fundraising drive on behalf of Hawaii Public Radio, Maui people would call in pledges, and she would "just light up the phones." "Maui people loved to hear her voice," Rosenfeld said. The funeral service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Keokea, followed by a reception. Johanos, DonaldMay 29, 2007 Former Honolulu Symphony Orchestra conductor Donald Johanos, who retired from music the same day he left the symphony in 1994, died Tuesday in Naples, Fla., of various heart and kidney ailments. He was 79. "When he left Honolulu, Donald basically got out of the music business," said former symphony Executive Director Bob Sandla. "He spent a lot of time caring for his second wife, Corrine, who died about six years ago." Johanos, who hailed from the cornfields of Iowa, is survived by first wife, Thelma Trimble, and current wife, Jane. His four children are Jennifer Johanos, a theater artist in New York; Thea Johanos-Kam, an expert on monk seals for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; Eva Johanos, a Maui teacher; and Andrew Johanos, an emergency room physician in Colorado, plus 12 grandchildren. Johanos' health had been deteriorating for a while, according to Sandla and son-in-law DJ McDonald. Johanos, a "square Midwesterner and a darn good second baseman in local softball," replaced the more swashbuckling conductor Robert La Marchina in 1979, said arts writer Jim Becker. "Musicians I've talked to at the symphony said that under Johanos the Honolulu orchestra never sounded better. The proof is in recordings they made in the early '90s." Hawaii Public Radio played selections from those recordings yesterday in tribute to Johanos. "He really had an impact on the orchestra," said Sandla. "His legacy is that he recognized the good young musicians he had and was quick to utilize our unique place in the Pacific, incorporating Hawaiian music. He also hired, as his No. 2, Henry Miyamura, who has had a profound influence on the Youth Symphony." When Johanos finally left the symphony, it was ending a period of bitter union lockouts and management issues. "He stuck it out," said Becker. "He was here as a full-time resident, a fixture in the community." Johanos' successors have lived here part time. Johanos began his career as a violinist but soon made a name for himself with the Pittsburgh and Dallas orchestras. In 1962 he succeeded mentor Sir Georg Solti as music director and principal conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. In 1970 he became associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Guest-conducting appearances included the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, Lisbon's Golden Festival, the Paris Opèra and the Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago and National symphonies. Johanos' recording of Glière's Symphony No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 42, with the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava) has never gone out of print. Also wearing the hat of music director, Johanos helped earn the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra a composer-in-residence grant, directly attributed to Johanos' boosterism of contemporary composing. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers recognized the symphony in 1991 for "adventuresome programming of contemporary music," thanks to Johanos.
