Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has been established by theGovernment of India by an Act of parliament in 1985 (Act No 501985) with theobjective of enhancing access to quality higher education through distancemode. The university has been mandated to:• Provide access to higher education to all segments of the society:• Offer high -quality, innovative and need-based programs at different levels, toall those who require them:• Reach out to the disadvantaged by offering programmes in all parts of thecountry at affordable costs.Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system is a system wherein teachers andlearners need not necessarily be present either at same place or same timeand is flexible in regard to modalities and timing of teaching and learning asalso the admission criteria without compromising necessary qualityconsiderations. ODL system of the country consists of Indira Gandhi NationalOpen University (IGNOU), State Open Universities (SOUs), Institutions andUniversities offering education and includes Correspondence CourseInstitutes (CCls) in conventional dual mode universities. This is becoming moreand more significant for continuing education, skill updation of in servicepersonnel and for quality education of relevance to learners located ateducationally disadvantageous locations.With the dissolution of the Distance Education Council of the IGNOU, theregulatory powers on ODL are currently vested with the University GrantsCommission (UGC).IGNOU offers about 230 different programmes of Ph.D., M.Phil, Masters,undergraduate, Post graduate Diploma, Diploma and Certificate programmesround the year i.e. January and July session through Offline and Online.
