ASHEVILLE MAN LEAVES$836,000 IN INSURANCE

Asheville.—Thomas R. Byrd, Ashe-ville financier, who was killed in anautomobile accident near Statesvillein 1929, left the largest amount oflife insurance among North Carolinacitizens dying last year, according tothe thirtieth annual “Life PaymentNumber” just issued by the NationalUnderwriter. His total insurance was$836,000.

Mr. Byrd was formerly agent forthe Volunteer State Life Insurance

This study in biography presentsthe progress in history. The Jewishnation had three kings in the unitednational life. Then came the split,following the death of Solomon andten tribes formed the Kingdom ofIsrael w'hile the ather portion wasknowm as the Kingdom of Judah. Thenorthern section started out wrong,for Jereboam proposed that twocalves be set up. in Bethel and Dan,that the people might make them cen-ters of worship rather than followthe command of Jehovah and go upto Jerusalem for the prescribed sol-emn feasts. It was not long beforeIsrael did more than worship thus. i

It will be remembered that whenthere was apostacy after Palestinehad been entered that God raisedup a series of judges who helped thepeople out of each emergency. Some-thing of the same method is seen inthe study of Old Testament history,following the division of the king-dom. Nowr prophets are called intoservice that they may tell the peopleof their sins and promise forgivenessif they will only sincerely repent.Amos is a man thus called into a high |office as spokesman for God. This:prophet is of humble origin.
