FRATERNITY CONDITIONS

Greek Life at Duquesne is one of the most dynamic components

of campus life. The Greek connnunity is comprised of over 600 men

and women actively seeking fraternal fulfillment, The Greek com

munity as a whole participates in many activities. Some of these

are Fall Carnival, Greek Sing, Derby Days, Pan-Hellenic Games,

Interfraternity Sports (football, volleyball, basketball, and soft

ball), and various combined social and community services. The

Greeks also hold the strongest voting power in the Student Congress.

In the past, the majority of the fraternities as well as

sororities have been local. But in recent years there has been a

definite movement toward national affiliation. An important aspect

of this movement has to do with the fact that only last year the

Administration lifted the ban on fraternity housing. This negative

attitude on the part of the Administration had held Greeks back

from their full potential in past years. But this factor is no

longer present. The administration at present is very much involved

in Greek life.

Besides the Greeks, the various clubs on campus are very

important. They offer the Greek corrununity stiff competition in

rushing, social, and athletic events; but their involvement in

other campus events is not as comprehensive as that of the Greeks.

Recent developments such as the lifting of the ban on fra

ternity housing have shown that the Greek community is a growing

and prosperous entity. Growing memberships and interest in Greek

life display an optimistic future for the Greek connnunity.

Beta Pi Sigma Fraternity is a local social fraternity founded

in 1938 as an organization of Slavic denomination. Soon there

after the Slavic requirement for membership was dropped. Edward

Rack, Walter Palonski, Joseph Klan and Edward Kuzinski were the

founding fathers. Throughout this time Beta Pi Sigma has grown

and prospered into one of the finest organizations on Duquesne's

campus. Our group has been a strong competitor in all Greek

activities since its founding. Our membership has remained solid

and our overall condition has been very stable over the years .

Beta Pi Sigma is a very active group, being involved in inter

and intra fraternity activitie s. The inte r fraternity activities

in which we participate are Fall Carnival, sports, Pan-Hellenic

Games, all Greek mixers, Carnival Ball and IFC service projects.

In the last three years we have placed in Carnival. Last year

we placed in every sport, and this year we won the school football

championship.

Among intra fraternity activitie s in which we participate are

mixers, smokers and two semi-formal dinner dances, and several

date parties each year. We hold various fund raisin g projects

which include raffles, and at present "Hoa gie Sales." We hold

general meetings every two weeks and many othe r informal gatherings

which he lp bring us closer to gether. We have many heritages,

traditions and activities through which we have become a very strong

unified brotherhood seeking the goals of fraternalism.

MEETING PLACE

At the present time the principal meeting place for our

Fraternity is a table on the fifth floor of the student union of

Duquesne University. Each fraternity and sorority is assigned one

of these tables. Another of our meeting places is in one of the

lounges on the 12th floor of Duquesne Towers Dormitory. Some time

in the futur e we have plans to have a fraternit y house. We do,

of cours e, realize that this will not be an immediate reality

after becoming a chapter of Al pha Sigma Phi Fraternity. We do

understand that there are many prel iminary procedures involved in

our goal to obtain frat e rnity housing.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF BETA PI SIGMA FRATERNITY

The Beta Pi Sigma Fraternity Alumni Association Directory

for 1971 lists 196 active members. Of this membership, 112 alumni

members live in the Greater Pittsburgh area and are actively in

terested in the local fraternity. Since the current records of

the membership of Beta Pi Sigma are incomplete for up - to-date in

formation on the alumni members, a list of the local alumni is

presented. It is the desire of the under graduate members of Beta

Pi Sigma that this local group of alumni will s e rve as the beginning

alumni or ganization for the unde rgraduate chapter, with as many

alumni as possible being initiated into Alpha Sigma Phi Frate rnity.

Alpha Sigma Phi National Chapter

Dear Sirs:

DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY

PITTSBURGH , PENNSYLVANIA

English Department

Ma r ch 3 , 19 71

I have been affiliated with the Beta Pi Sigma fraternity of Duquesne University as faculty advisor since February of 1966. During that time I have never had the slightest reason to regret being so associated. As a former brother of the fraternity, I can truly say that I have always been able to take pride in the boys who are now carrying on the traditions I helped to establish.

In sports, winning or losing, these young men have constantly shown themselves gentlem@n. In IFC matters, the brothers of Beta Pi Sigma have assumed leading roles in social and political affairs, being particularly instrumental in getting University administrators to see the value of fraternity house life. And in charitable work, the brothers have won the respect of the University president and of all those aware of their efforts.

It is my opinion that your national chapter will add much lustre to the present fraternity, but I can also write with legitimate pride that I feel you have been very fortunate in havin8 Beta Pi Sigma choose to pledge you.

Sincerely,

~(J~, ·}: Jos. J. Keenan, Jr. Faculty Advisor Beta Pi Sigma

It is my privilege to write this short letter of recommendation for the brothers of Beta Pi who are seeking to become members of the national organization, Alpha Sigma Phi.

I have known most of the Beta Pi fraternity members through their participation in Intramural Athletic competition. I can sincerely say that this group has always displayed an abundance of propriety, fairmindedness, and a wholesome spirit of competitiveness. They are a close knit group and always seem to be helping each other grow as mature individuals.

I cannot think of a finer group of people to recommend for participation in a national, fraternal organization.

Yours truly,

Dear Mr. Madison:

I am aware that the members of Beta Pi Sigma will be making application for formal installation as a chapter of the national Alpha Sigma Phi.

To my knowledge these men have met all of the regulations of Duquesne University in their efforts to become a national chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi. In working with the individuals of Beta Pi Sigma, which was their local fraternity, I have been impressed with their zeal and with their efforts to provide the men of Duquesne University with an active fraternity that makes a significant contribution to . the student life on campus. It is with little reservation that I recommend to you that they be accepted as a national . chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi.

Sincerely yours,

DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY

Executive Board of Alpha Sigma Phi

Dear Sirs:

As Dresident of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Duquesne, I heartily endorse your affiliation with the former Beta Pi Sigma's. The Beta's have had a long and proud tra dition here at Duquesne , a fact I'm sure you already are aware of, and I was most haopy t o hear of their desire to " g o national." \·ie are in the proce ss of be coming national ourselves, so are both undergoing t he same basic transition.

In my estimation the Beta 1 s are among the finest groups on camuus. They have tradi ti onally excelled in all aspec t s of Greek life, recently ca pturing first place in f oo tball (we were second) and second pl a ce in Carnival(we were first). As you ca n see, then, there exists a strong rivalry between · our two groups. But the rivalry is a healthy one, and does not in anyway interfere with an objective a ccount of the fraternity as a whole. The Beta's are a fine group of men, dedicated to their fraternity, to the Greek system, and to Duquesne University. ..._,

It is my opinion that the proud traditi on of Beta Pi Sigma will ·continue to flourish . under Alpha Sigma Phi, and that it will be one of its finest chapters .

Res :pe c tfully,
