PIONEER GROWER OF PEACHES-
A A R Griffin the genial gentleman-who dispenses merchandise at An-thony
¬
was In town yesterday and Ina reminiscent mood which took himover his experience as a pioneer or ¬
ange grower at Orange Springs andone who revived Interest In the peachtree In Marlon This was many yearsago for Mr Griffin and fatnlly had I
come from Georgia to do the springs-over a quarter of a century ago andwe remember well the big politicalmeeting held at Orange Springs in1886 when the late A P Baskin andFrank Pooser ran for the legislature-and were the first democrats to beelected from Marion since reconstruc-tion
¬
times and on which occasion MrGriffin headed tho barbecue commit-teeI and fed a 1000 people that day asthey had not been treated In years Itwas a great turnout and full of en-thusiasm
¬
But to resume when Mrand Mrs Griffin came to Florida from I
their Georgia home Mrs Griffinthought It would be a good idea tobring with them a lot of peach seedsand plant them in Marion soil It wasdone and the Griffins became famous-In those early days as growing thefinest fruit known to the people ofthat section One day Mr Griffinwent to the springs to get his mail anddo some shopping and had with him-a big basket of fine peaches which hedistributed to people around the storeAll pronounced them Immense Amongthem was a gentleman from Keuka
r In Putnam county who Inquired howmuch of that kind of fruit Mr Grif-fin
¬
had Mr Griffin said about 100bushels The Putnam county manwas so astounded at the statementbelieving there were not as manybushels of peaches in the whole stateand In his indignity at such a state ¬
ment said he who said It was the big ¬
gest prevaricator In the state Thisstatement was communicated to MrGriffin and It not only amused himbut aroused his curiosity to see hownear he did state the facts tbout thepeach crop So he asked his neigh ¬
bor Mr Brinson to come over of aSunday and they carefully estimated-the peaches on each tree and MrBrinson footed it up as 154 bushelsThis estimate made Mr Griffin feelso good that he thought he wouldgive the store visitors an extra treat-so loaded up his wagon and sureenough did give the people around thestore at Orange Springs their fill ofthe luscious fruit and among themwas the gentleman from Keuka whoate as many as any one and as he atehe said to Mr Griffin he would liketo know who grew the fruit Mr Greplied the biggest prevaricator inthe state The man looked up andsaid he remembered something aboutsaying that whoever made the state ¬
ment that If any one man in Floridahad grown 100 bushels of that classand grade of peaches he was the big
II
Y
gest prevaricator In the state but ifhe had done any one an Injustice hewas ready to make amends by anapology but was curious to know IfMr Griffin had that many bushels offruit So Mr Griffin recited thefacts In the case and had Mr Brin ¬
son present to verify them And the I
man who had unthinkingly made the I
charge of an untruth retracted thesame and It Is a matter of record thatthe man became so Impressed withthe possibilities of peach culture InFlorida that he became a successfulpioneer grower of this fruit at Keukafor which that place has since becomefamous Both the incident and its re-
ally¬
seen He introduced the scuppersuits and the fact that it established-Mr Griffins standard for truth andveracity in the mind of a stranger didhim more good that that crop of fruitwas worth and this incident caused-Mr Griffin to remark that he wassurprised that the average farmer ofMarion county did not have morefruit around his place than is gener ¬
ally seen He introduced the scupper-nong grape particularly which willgrow anywhere for the planting andthere are others which would notonly add to the pleasure but healthof all who ate them-

store his health
That is a splendid suggestion by thecity board of health about having theweeds cut from the vacant lots in thecity and we trust the property owners-of the first ward will set an example-in this good work that all the otherwards will be aroused to follow andthus rid of city of the noxious andunsightly objects-

zens of Citra and a splendid citizenand business man one who will be aworker on the county board when hetakes his seat He said the outlookfor a good crop of oranges at Citraand Island Grove was good and thegrove owners are feting hopeful MrCrosby has been under the weathersome and with his family spent amonth at Pablo Beach and was de-
lighted with the place He is nowwell and hearty He made the Star apleasant call-

voted considerable of his time to lit ¬

THE BROTHERHOOD BEACON-
A Song of Broader Humanity-
By Milo Deyo
TuneThe Star Spangled Banner-
OhI
say can you seeThrough the mists of the nightWhat our hearts through the yearsHave been earnestly seeking-The soulcheering glowOf a generous lightThat shall flood all the realmNow with Selfishness reeking-Yes tis there oh tis thereShowing steady and clearIounting higher each hourChasing doubt dread and fearAnd the Brotherhood Beacon
I With ardor shall beamI Till the heart of the world
Feels the warmth of its gleam-II
Twas not always our eyesWere thus blest in their search
Twas not always their questFound our object of longingThere were tempest and shock
I
And the roll and the lurchOf our craft rudely tossedMid oppression and wrongingNot an impulse of graceFor the Suffering RaceTill the thought We are Brothers-On earth found a placeAnd the Brotherhood Beacon-
In mercy shall shineTill the heart of the world
Learns the message divineIll
But the Daystar has dawnedWe behold and rejoiceAnd our jubilant voicesBurst forth into singingHandinhand Brothers all
Glorious song of our choicePeel it forth to the welkinLike marriage bells ringingNot by riches or mightBut through Faith in the RightCame the vision of JoyWhich now gladdens our sightAnd the Brotherhood Beacon-
In splendor shall blazeTill the heart of the world
Owns the power of its raysIV
And to those be the praiseWho have nurtured the fireAnd have kept it aflameThrough the darkness and dangerStruggling manfully onWith a zeal naught could tireIn the footsteps of HimWho was born in a mangerLK us all then be true-to the purpose in viewAnd with earnest devotion
Do all we can doAnd the Brotherhood Beacon
In triumph shall burnTill the heart of the world
To its welcome shall turnWest Haven December lOS
