Received for publication, August 16, 1921.)The p apers of th is ser ies form a par t of the general program of s tudyof the non-specific in toxica t ions which is being carr ied forward

These papers fol low along the logicaldevelo pmen t of th is s tudy, based on the beginnings mad e by Hal l a ndWhipple (3) . Reference to the paper of Hal l and Whipple is necessaryfor a review of some of the rath er extens ive l i terature of th is subjectand for a d iscuss ion of m an y of the funda menta l problems related toRoentgen ray in toxicat ion.

Too l it t le s tud y has been directed toward an under s tandingof the non-specific in toxi cat ion which of ten is a very imp or tan tfactor in many of the so cal led specif ic infections . This R oentge nray in toxicat ion closely resembles the in toxicat ion of in tes t inal ob-s t ruc t ion , ano ther im por ta n t non-specific in toxic at ion. We shal lpoin t out some impo r tan t d if ferences between the in toxicat ion dueto the Roe ntgen rays as contras ted with in tes t inal o bs truct ion, b utthere remain many s t r ik ing s imilar i t ies as emphas ized by Hal l andWhi pple (3).
