ArticlesBeware! The Garden Bug strikes again. Mt. Garfield Greehouse and Nursery comes to the rescue Leave a reply

Whimsical yard ornaments add personality to any garden setting.

By Jennifer VanDyke

The days are growing longer and the Grand Valley is greening up! Bulbs are beginning to awaken from the comfort of their frozen beds, stretching their leaves and opening their blossoms to greet the new spring season.

But there is a dark side to the longer days, bugs. The first bug you’ll be bitten by as the weather warms isn’t likely going to be a mosquito. If you’re the type of person who appreciates nature and likes to stop and smell the roses, watch out! Lurking behind every sunny day is the infamous Garden Bug and you are most vulnerable. The bite itself can be painless; however, when combined with Spring Fever, the effects can be terminal.

The first symptom an unsuspecting victim might notice may seem mild in the beginning and is often mistaken for Spring Fever, which is the inability to stay indoors; however, as the season progresses, symptoms will increase to include an uncontrollable urge to pull weeds, urges clear your yard space, having the desire to get hands dirty and finally, visualizing a flourishing, luxurious variety of lush plants. These symptoms often become a full blown case of Garden Fever.

Although there is no known permanent cure for Garden Fever, there is only one way to ease these symptoms, go to the nearest garden nursery and get busy! One such place is Mt. Garfield Geenhouse and Nursery, located at 3162 F Road. Mt. Garfield has been dealing with those who are afflicted with Garden Fever since 1988, so you know they have a lot of experience and can offer

Jumping Spiders, some beneficial “insects” are just misunderstood Leave a reply

By Jennifer VanDyke

Although Jumping Spiders are known to bite, they would sooner hop out of harms way.

Spiders have earned a scary reputation; however, given the numerous types of spiders, there only a handful of arachnids that are venomous and very few in the venomous category are actually aggressive.

One of the most startling arachnids are Jumping Spiders, which can jump several times the length of their bodies. As with any living creature, if they’re provoked, Jumping Spiders may become agitated enough to bite; however, they would sooner hop out of harms way than to bite. Jumping Spiders also use their jumping skills to aggressively hunt food since they don’t snatch food by spinning webs.

Spiders are arachnids and are not considered to be insects; but, they’re beneficial to gardens because they are predators to garden pests, so if you see a spider in your garden, be cautious; but, please give them a break by keeping an open mind. If the spider isn’t aggressive nor venomous, it has a job to do.

Business owners remain optimistic during downtown construction Leave a reply

By Jennifer VanDyke [slideshow id=13]

If you’ve been downtown recently, there’s little doubt that you’ve noticed construction taking place. With roadblocks and limited sidewalk space, a concerned patron might even wonder how local business is faring?

The owners of Gelato Junction, Jim and Paula Hawkins, have remained upbeat during their slower season and insist that the construction has had a positive impact on the local establishment.

When the the downtown project began, Paula opened her doors early to construction employees and offered them free hot chocolate and coffee in order to help the workers offset the cold weather.

Paula’s kind gesture and positive attitude has paid off, ”We’re like buddies and most of them eat lunch here. I can’t offer you a glass of water right now because they’re updating the plumbing, but the construction has been good for my business,” Paula said. “When the construction is over my business will double, so we’re happy for the construction.”
