priest upon the court how they came to judge and are them- selves ¬ judged now disdainfully now hotly accused and at last convicted- in their own consciousness for that con ¬ temptible crime and high treason to truth indifference The reader with half a heart ought to ravel in this bathe in the flaming scorn which the canon purs upon half justice glory in the bitter hatred flung upon the Count And if lle pious reader shrink from enjoying this headlong honest fury and inquire how a Christian priest can be allowed the luxury of hate let this be the anser that the Christian creed teaches u to love our enemies but never told u to love the enemies of our friends That is a refinement- upon forgh ingness too easy for the selfish coward too unlike St Peter himself There is a point beyond which whole mass of Brownings works And it is an answer also to that interpretation of The Statue and the Bust which makes activity in evil a virtue and passivity the only vice It is plain enough from this rough handling of Guido that Browning believed passivity to be not only the only vice although the great ¬ est And it would not be fair to say that this Is reading ourselves into The Ring and the Book instead of reading Browning out of It For his inatten ¬ tion to melodious phraseology often conceals the fact that he was the most moral conscientious and con ¬ scious of our modern poets when it came to the handling of the higher dramatic machinerysuch as the pur ¬ pose and complex significance of a poem may be called At any rate we have his own word for it that such moral applications were not accidental- in this poem at least Bk 1 lines 470472 Bk XII 831863 And from that reading of the original story he tells us I turned to free myself and find the world A poem of Browning of course offers ample material for discussion and there is great temptation to let this discussion run along purely literary philological or historical lines Such themes no doubt deserve attention But after all we ought to concern our- selves ¬ chiefly with trying to appreciate- in full the morals and moral whole someness of The Riny and the Book And we should try to fix the relation of this canto to the whole poem and of the priest to the other characters- To do this we might ask ourselves those questions 1 Was it natural- for Caponsacchi to tell his story so fully a second time 21 Do his lapses nto indignation come at nat ¬ ural points in his narrative 3 Is his defense of Pompilia and himself satisfactorily logical throughout 4 If not where are the weak places 5 Vould his judges be likely to misunderstand his attitude towards Pompilia ffii What persons really understood It 7 Does he scorn to explain certain compromising Inci- dents ¬ of the flight because he scorns the court or for what other reason- S 1 Does he impress us as a man How is the effect produced 0 What change did Pompilia make in him 10 What change did htr murder make in him 11 How does the poet tell us that his sincerity impressed the court 12 Examine- his bursts of feeling lines 163 77178 17071851 1S5S 1925 20122039 2076 Do these passages convince us of his sincerity What qualities in them serve to do this The most impressive thing in the canto is beyond question the character of Caponsaechi himself It is flashed upon the read ° rs understanding with- out I a previous hint of its depth and strength It is the great surprise of the poem Of the gay and wordly type of fine family and ambitious hopes he had entered the church with no very real appreciation of his vows All this careless courtliness is sudden- ly ¬ striped from him when he first stands in the presence of Pompilla Yet not without a struggle does he re- solve ¬ to help her flight to Rome His desire to sacrifice himself and to obey the letter of his vows oppose But he comes from the struggle purged of all hypocrisy a fearless man willing to live the truth Pompilia evokes from him no false love It is characteristic- of him that through her his church becomes at last a religion to him Nor does her good influence end with her death He is no maudlin Romeo to commit suicide upon her tomb She has so ennobled him that his egotism vanishes away in a determination to ply for the rest of his life the daily round of perpetual service I mean- to do my duty and live long he says to have to do with nothing but the true the good the eternal and th jse not alone in the main current of the genet al life but small experiences of every day to learn not only by a comets rush but R roses birth And he nds with O great just good God Miserable IDe- As we lay the volume aside it is whl to reflect upon the high moral solemnity of this book It is a pic- ture ¬ such as few writers have given- us It is the picture of a man who heartily hates this villainous Guido of- a malt who has acquired a fine moral bravery his bitter experience has not embittered him or turned him mor- bidly ¬ and egotistically upon himself dwarfing him so it hse enlarged him Pompilia and the Privet stand as the two figures ot sfaourity the one of sincarlty Irfbocn thc other of sincerity attained I fi i t iii J- I T n The Essential Feature In the temptible crime and high treason totruth indifference The reader withhalf a heart ought to ravel in thisbathe in the flaming scorn which thecanon purs upon half justice glory inthe bitter hatred flung upon theCount

And if lle pious reader shrink fromenjoying this headlong honest furyand inquire how a Christian priestcan be allowed the luxury of hate letthis be the anser that the Christiancreed teaches u to love our enemiesbut never told u to love the enemiesof our friends That is a refinement-upon forgh ingness too easy for theselfish coward too unlike St Peterhimself There is a point beyondwhich benevolence becomes insipidHealthv hate as well as love is whatmakes the world go round is whatrocked the infant church in her cra-dle

To say that all this Is contained inCaponsacchis speech may seem far

A poem of Browning of course offersample material for discussion andthere is great temptation to let thisdiscussion run along purely literaryphilological or historical lines Suchthemes no doubt deserve attentionBut after all we ought to concern our-selves
