We had so much fun making cards for our

grandparents! 1st Grade: October is an exciting month for first grade! We want to start by saying thank you to all the grandparents that came to our Grandparent's Day event. Thank you to all the parents that have donated to our art program. Ms. Barbara is appreciative for all the donations she has received! Fall is here and we are excited to be going on our first field trip to Underwood Farms on October 28th. Information about our trip has been sent home. We have been preparing for our quarter one benchmarks that will take place on the 12th-16th. In Language Arts we are reviewing letter sounds and blending. We will continue with learning new sight words and how to write a narrative. In science, we will continue our unit about the human body and how important nutrition is for us. This all ties in to our upcoming Red Ribbon week on the 26th where we will learn how to be and stay healthy!

Celebrating a birthday!

2nd Grade: As usual, October is another busy month for us. We continue to practice our study skills and make use of our social contract to help guide us in our daily interactions with others. Good listening and tracking the teacher are two of the many skills we are stressing in honing our study habits. We all thoroughly enjoyed the unit on Tall Tales and created a number of fun projects as we studied the story components and the exaggerated character traits. Early Asian Civilizations has helped to broaden our understanding of cultures and history, and after completing a number of great fun projects we look forward to learning about the ancient Greeks and Greek Myths. During reading, we strive for our goal of fluency while answering story questions with full details from the stories. Our writing includes a variety of topics, all with an eye for following grammar conventions while including a topic sentence, full details and a closing. Students are learning to proof their own work before turning it in, thereby finding and correcting any possible errors on their own. In math, we are working on applying a variety of skills and methods. Students are explaining how they came up with an answer and expanding the choices they have to solve problems. We continue to expand our minds, our vocabulary and our understanding! 3rd Grade: Our third grade students have had a blast learning all about animal classification from their 2nd unit of CKLA! They brought in supplemental information and materials from home, and they even researched and wrote about their favorite species! We can’t wait to explore animal habitats as we learn more about

ecology at the Los Angeles Arboretum in the Spring. The third graders also received their first letter back from their pen pals at Valley Alternative Magnet School. They are enjoying getting to know their pen pal while practicing how to write friendly letters! In addition, we are excited to begin our first core literature book, Charlotte’s Web

. Do you think any of the characters we meet will have qualities of an entrepreneur? We are eager to find out!

Welcoming our Grandparents!

4th Grade: 4th Graders, growing, succeeding, and excited about what each day brings! Our personal narratives are improving daily as we explore and include more descriptive and sensory language and expand to three paragraphs that are interesting and fun to read. We have wrapped up our geometry unit in math with circles, trapezoids, and parallelograms lying everywhere about our rooms. Literature is being appreciated, Social Contracts are working effectively, and artifacts from the visits to the Rain Forest have been displayed. Leaves may begin to fall soon but we will be reaching upward to greater things.

5th Grade: Fifth Grade has had a very exciting month! We just finished our second math unit on Partial Sum, Partial Difference and Lattice methods for adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals. We learned how to play a math game called factor captor and are excited to start our first math project about averages. In Language Arts and Social Studies we are finishing our Unit on the Maya, Inca, and Aztec and are

culminating with a Codex Project that incorporates Writing and Social Studies. Science has been very exciting as we created cell models out of edible foods. Students had to justify why they chose specific foods for specific parts of the cell. We are preparing to go on our first field trip on November 20th to the Griffith Park Observatory by learning about our planets and solar system. Students are excited to begin opening businesses for Ivy Community and are working hard to create business ideas and plans. Students are learning about advertising, business organizations, and what it will take to open up their own businesses.

and refining our narrative writing essay skills. In Math we are working on percents, decimals, and fractions. We will be applying these skills to a real world project on unit prices and appropriate financial development. In Social Studies we are studying Ancient Egypt and comparing the pharaohs to modern day

entrepreneurs. In Science we are studying the renewable and nonrenewable resources available to us and the conservation efforts. In both Social Studies and Science we are working on our unit projects. In addition to content skills, we are working on developing the real world skill of time management. In other news, we are excited to be working with our buddy classes and being the example for the younger students on campus. We appreciate our parent involvement, volunteers, and supply donations. We are looking forward to Nacho-Average Thursday sales to support our 6th Grade Fundraising for Pali Camp.

Message from the 7-12 Counselor Lynda Llamas [email protected]

Message from the 7-12 Counselor Lynda Llamas [email protected] September was a very busy month! One highlight was giving a presentation to our ninth graders on why “Ninth Grade Matters.” I went to each of the Freshman Seminar classes to discuss how ninth grade builds a foundation for success in high school. We also talked about graduation requirements and A-G college requirements. The freshmen had many questions and were excited to learn about how they can be maximizing their time this year. UCLA Another highlight was spending a day at my alma mater, UCLA, for the University of California Counselor Conference. I heard updates from each of the ten UC campuses and saw the profiles for the incoming freshman classes. As it is getting more and more competitive to go the UC, it was helpful to learn more about the application itself and how students can use it to highlight all their accomplishments from the past 4 years. It was a great day full of info that I will share with all our students especially seniors who are applying to the University this month.

UCLA

College Representative Visits We also started our college representative presentations this month with visits from the University of San Francisco and UC San Diego. These presentations are quite eye opening for our students and provide more insight into colleges that they can explore. Mostly seniors and juniors attended these events though they are open to all high schoolers. Please check out my webpage for the latest college events happening on campus and in the LA area.

For our underclassmen, we have the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) coming up on Wednesday, October 14. I encourage all of our underclassmen to sign up. The revised SAT is coming in 2016 and the PSAT will reflect the new changes. Not only is this test a good preparation for the SAT, students who take the PSAT can see what Advanced Placement classes they might be ready for as well get feedback about critical

academic skills. The cost of the exam is $15.00. Students can sign up and make payments in the office.

Frequently asked questions: Can a 9th grade student take the PSAT? Yes What does the PSAT/NMSQT measure? The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading, math, and writing skills developed over many years, both in and out of school. Students are not asked to recall facts from literature, history, or science, or to complete math formulas, because this test measures reasoning and critical thinking skills. Why take the test? ~ Get feedback about critical academic skills ~ Prepare for the SAT ~ Start getting ready for college ~ Enter scholarship competitions (for 11th graders) ~ See which AP courses you might be ready for Ivy High School Student Council

Upcoming Fundraising Events! High School Student Council has been planning several fundraisers for this upcoming month. The fundraisers help support all grade levels as well as certain Student Council committees and special activities. On October 5, 2015 there is an Uba Tuba

Fundraiser from 5pm - 8pm. The address is 18641 Ventura Blvd Tarzana, CA 91356. On October 13, 2015 a Chipotle fundraiser will be held to help support the senior class. It will be from 4pm-8pm. The address is 9175 De Soto Ave, Chatsworth, CA 91311. Student Council Elections! Student Council welcomed new members to our association. Which included new Presidents and Vice Presidents for Freshman and Sophomore Steering! We also welcomed new members to join our very own Work Committee. Student Council will continue to unite the student body and make this school year an enjoyable experience. Club Sign up! Student Council held a club rush on October 2nd presented the new clubs. Ivy Athletes High School

Fall sports are finally here:

1. Cross Country 2. Cheerleading 3. Girls’ Volleyball

As you know, we are at a new gym located on 9400 Penfield Ave. Chatsworth 91311. There is one thing that will never be new at Ivy though are the player’s commitment to school, team, and to their sport. 1st Place Sports Complex will be where we will host all our home games for the 2015-16 season. Come join Ivy’s athletes this year with some Puma Pride as we look to write a new chapter in our road to success. GO PUMAS!!! Girls’ Volleyball The girls’ volleyball season is off to a shaky start with an 0-3 record. The team has performed very well in each of their matches and could be clearly 3-0. The girls are still confident that they will still bring home the North Valley League Division title. With the league play beginning next week Coach Petty is sure that the season will definitely turn around. Come join us at our home matches and bring your Puma spirit. The girls’ upcoming games: October 2nd home game .vs. Sun Valley @ 3:00 p.m., October 5th home game @ 3:00 p.m. GO PUMAS!!! Cross Country Ivy Cross Country has been at a standstill due to the extreme heat. Hopefully by next week we could be off and running! Their first meet is scheduled for October 1st @ 2:30pm at Pierce College. Head Coach Alejandro Ruiz is very excited about his squad this season and expecting big things from them. Talk with Coach Ruiz about how YOU can come support your classmates and school at their first meet. GO PUMAS!!!

The Ivy Parent Leadership Group is in full gear for the month of October. We have several campaigns going on.

Box Tops iPLG is sponsoring a Most Creative Box Top Container contest. We have asked each class to submit a container that represents their class. The winning class will receive a popsicle party. Containers are due at our October meeting at Valley Circle.

Gift Wrapping Fundraiser By now your student should have brought home information regarding this fundraiser. This is one of iPLG’s successful fundraisers. Please have your friends and family fill out the forms and have them turned in on October 10th.

Ivy Annual Giving Campaign A big THANK YOU to all families who have helped jump start this campaign. So far we have had 21 families give and raised $3500. Our goal is to have 100 families give and raise $15,000. If you haven’t given yet, it’s not too late. Forms will go out weekly in the e-blast and hard copy. If you are in need of a form, you can pick one up in the office at your student’s campus. In the past, the funds raised, helped to purchase 3 golf carts, white boards for each class and P.E equipment.

iPLG is need of committed parents to help out with upcoming events. Want to complete your volunteer hours? Come out to our next meeting on October 8th or email us at [email protected] and we will plug you in. Have a great October!!!
