IVER HEALTH SYSTEM July 2019 Great River Medical Center Receives AHA Honor Mission: Lifeline Achievement Award for Heart Attack Treatment Great River Medical Center has received the Mis- sion: Lifeline Silver Plus Receiving Quality Achieve- ment Award from the American Association. It recognizes the hospital for implementing specific quality-improvement measures outlined by the association for treating patients who have had severe heart attacks. Every year, more than 250,000 people experi- ence an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) – the deadliest type of heart attack – caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication. The American Heart Association’s Mission: Life- line program’s goal is to reduce system barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks, beginning with the 911 call to emergency medical services (EMS) transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge. The initiative provides tools, training and other resources to support heart attack care following protocols from the most recent evidence-based treatment guidelines. The hospital earned the award by meeting spe- cific criteria and standards of performance for quick and appropriate treatment through emergency procedures to re-establish blood flow to blocked arteries in heart attack patients coming into the hospital directly or by transfer from another facility. “Great River Medical Center is dedicated to pro- viding optimal care for heart attack patients,” said Walid Saad, MD, medical director, Cardiology. “We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in cardiac care through Mission: Lifeline.” Tim Henry, MD, chair, Mission: Lifeline Acute Coronary Syndrome Subcommittee, said: “We commend Great River Medical Center for this award in recognition for following evidence-based guidelines for timely heart attack treatment. We applaud the significant institutional commitment to their critical role in the system of care for quickly and appropriately treating heart attack patients.” The American Heart Association’s Mission: Life- line program helps hospitals and EMS develop systems of care that follow proven standards and procedures for STEMI patients. The program works by mobilizing teams across the continuum of care to implement American Heart Association/Amer- ican College of Cardiology Foundation clinical treatment guidelines. July 2019

Great River Medical Center Receives AHA HonorMission: Lifeline Achievement Award for Heart Attack TreatmentGreat River Medical Center has received the Mis-sion: Lifeline Silver Plus Receiving Quality Achieve-ment Award from the American Association. It recognizes the hospital for implementing specific quality-improvement measures outlined by the association for treating patients who have had severe heart attacks.

Every year, more than 250,000 people experi-ence an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) – the deadliest type of heart attack – caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication.

The American Heart Association’s Mission: Life-line program’s goal is to reduce system barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks, beginning with the 911 call to emergency medical services (EMS) transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge. The initiative provides tools, training and other resources to support heart attack care following protocols from the most recent evidence-based treatment guidelines.

The hospital earned the award by meeting spe-cific criteria and standards of performance for quick and appropriate treatment through emergency procedures to re-establish blood flow to blocked arteries in heart attack patients coming into the hospital directly or by transfer from another facility.

“Great River Medical Center is dedicated to pro-viding optimal care for heart attack patients,” said Walid Saad, MD, medical director, Cardiology. “We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in cardiac care through Mission: Lifeline.”

Tim Henry, MD, chair, Mission: Lifeline Acute Coronary Syndrome Subcommittee, said: “We commend Great River Medical Center for this award in recognition for following evidence-based guidelines for timely heart attack treatment. We applaud the significant institutional commitment to their critical role in the system of care for quickly and appropriately treating heart attack patients.”

The American Heart Association’s Mission: Life-line program helps hospitals and EMS develop systems of care that follow proven standards and procedures for STEMI patients. The program works by mobilizing teams across the continuum of care to implement American Heart Association/Amer-ican College of Cardiology Foundation clinical treatment guidelines. Stevens Named Service Hero

Cindy Stevens, Nephrology, received Great River Health System’s Service Hero award in June. Employees receive the award for demonstrating actions that extend beyond routine, expected behavior.

According to Stevens’ nomination, a clinic patient needed a special medication that was not imme-diately available in the patient’s chosen pharmacy. The Nephrology clinic had a medication sample, but the patient couldn’t pick it up. Stevens took the medication to the patient’s house.

Breastfeeding MonthIn recognition of National Breastfeeding Month in August, Great River Medical Center is raising money to support breastfeeding. Proceeds will be used to purchase donor breast milk from Mother’s Milk Bank of Iowa.

Donor milk is used at the hospital by newborns with special needs and those who need supple-mental milk while their mothers are breastfeeding. The milk costs about $5 per ounce.

Some benefits of breastfeeding are:• Breastfed babies are less likely to develop asthma.• Breastfeeding reduces the risk of sudden infant

death syndrome.• Children who are breastfed for six months are

less likely to become obese.• Breastfeeding protects babies from illnesses in-

cluding diarrhea, ear infections and pneumonia.• Mothers who breastfeed have a decreased risk of

breast and ovarian cancers.
