Inserting an Intravenous Catheter
Step 1: Gather your materials
* Disposable non-latex gloves* Appropriate size IV catheter (typically 18 – 22 gauge)* Non-latex tourniquet* Transparent dressing and tape* Alcohol wipes
Step 2: Pick your IV site
Apply the tourniquetLook, feel and use solid tractionAchieve proper needle placement Cleanse the area with an alcohol wipeHold the needle ensuring no movement
Step 3: Insertion of the IV
Insert the catheter at an angle Look for a flashback of bloodAdvance the needle Remove the needle, Leave the catheter in place
Step 4: Secure the IV
Attach the catheter to IV tubingTape the IV catheterPlace a transparent dressing over siteSecure IV tubing to the skin
Step 5: Documentation and Evaluation
Evaluate flow of solution through siteMonitor site for redness and swellingDocument all necessary information
