Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, in her address on theoccasion of the PhosAgro/UNESCO/IUPAC Award-Giving Ceremony(Grants for research projects proposed by young scientists in greenchemistry); St Petersburg, 2 June 2017 said that: *
We need chemistry to move forward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We need chemistry to eradicate poverty. We need chemistry to bolster health. We need chemistry to mitigate the impacts of climate changeIn a word, we need chemistry for human rights and dignity, to leave no one behind.
Not just any chemistry.... We need green chemistry... sustainable chemistry...chemistry that respects the boundaries of the planet...chemistry that is inclusive, that works for the benefit of all...Indeed, the modern world, as never before, needs green chemistry.

Interdivisional Committee on Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development, ICGCSD
ICGCSDInterdivisional Committee on Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development
Aims:
To assist in advancing the objectives set out in theStrategic Plan adopted by IUPAC in 2015.
The Interdivisional Committee will initiate, promote, and coordinate the work of the Union in the area ofgreen and sustainable chemistry.
ICGCSD collaboration with International Bodies
ICGCSD is responsible for the promulgation of the workof the Union in green and sustainable chemistry throughinteraction with other relevant international chemicaland non-chemical organizations with a common interest.

ICGCSD contributions to UN 17 SDGs
ICGCSD has contributed to:
the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism and the upcoming Science, Technology and Innovation Forum for the Sustainable Development Goals
ICGCSD has also contributed to UNEP’s call to submit best practices and
initiatives in the area of sustainable chemistry pursuant to Resolution
2/7 on chemicals and waste adopted in 2016 at the second session of the UN Environment
Assembly, UN Environment
Brundlandt Commission, 1987
ICGCSDInterdivisional Committee on Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development
IUPAC Mission (Strat. Review, 2014/15) and the
17 UN Sustainable Development Goals
Green Chemistry, in all of its embodiments, can
contribute to realization of these goals. Thus,
ICGCSD will seek to unite chemists, from different
sub-disciplines, in multidisciplinary teams to address specific tasks via projects and activities.

The$Way$Forward:
Aims: to open a dialogue on Green Chemistry and Sustainability with relevant international Industries and related chemical organizations. This is a bottom-up approach: IUPAC provides with a panel around which industries have the opportunity to make their voice heard by developing, elaborating and finally submitting project proposals.

METRICS FOR GREEN SYNTHESES
Objective: To develop Green metrics and harmonizethe correct application of green metrics analysis insyntheses under the IUPAC umbrella. So, chemists will be encouraged to submitprocedures and protocols following such well-definedguidelines and goals.First phase: developing a survey! a comprehensivecompilation and ranking of available metrics that arecurrently used
Follow-up project: set of guidelines dealing withmetrics limitations and guidelines for publishing result.
