Test Procedure: Philips iU22
(1) Power up machine. Verify accuracy of displayed time and date.
(2) Perform mechanical inspection (wheel locks, etc). Visually inspect each transducer face(cracks, cuts, dents, other damage), connector pins (dust, damage), transducer and power
cables (cuts, defects, other damage). Check the air filter for cleanliness*.(3) Start new patient using the ZPAF convention specified in the
Ultrasound_annual_test_schedule.xls spreadsheet.(4) Select transducer and preset (usually Gen/Gen). (Button 9) The active transducer is the one
shown in green.(5) Remember: NEVER CONNECT/DISCONNECT AN ACTIVE TRANSDUCER
(To de-activate the current transducer, attach another transducer and select that secondtransducer. You will hear a clicking sound when the second transducer has been activated.)
(6) Set TGC to be centered.(7) Add the transducer serial number to image annotation. (Button 7)
(8) Add the phantom serial number to image annotation.(9) For each transducer, turn off SONO-CT, X-RES and harmonics if activated. (These buttons
are located on the touch-screen. These options are OFF when buttons are blue and ON if buttons are green).
(10) All tests are performed at the highest frequency available for each transducer. This is doneby setting the 2D Opt to Res. (Button 21)
(11) Verify all settings each time you select a different transducer. (12) To make sure you are not capturing cine images, freeze each image before saving. Make
sure the image is annotated properly before it is saved. (Buttons 16 (Freeze) and 17 (Print))
*Air FilterThe air filter is located on the lower left-hand side of the ultrasound unit.Turn off power before you remove the air filter. Do not turn power on without an air filter installed.

(1) Uniformitya. Position the probe in most homogeneous area of phantom (parallel to short axis of the
phantom, if possible).
b. Set depth at maximum achievable, but no deeper than just below reflection from thebottom of phantom. (Button 14)
c. Use only one focus (Button 13), set at the deepest depth or just above the base ofphantom.
d. 2D Opt: Res (Button 21)e. Set gain to demonstrate uniformity. (Button 22)
f. Adjust TGC if necessary to eliminate horizontal bandingg. Evaluate for artifacts, dropouts, or excessive banding that cannot be corrected with
TGC adjustments. If artifacts are present, store additional images to show theseartifacts.
For curvilinear transducers, display the full FOV. Roll the probe left and right to evaluate for
dropout across transducer face. Store 2-3 images to demonstrate image quality across the entiretransducer face.

For curvilinear transducers, the FOV (sector width) can be reduced(Button 3) for the
remaining tests.
(2) Depth of penetrationa. Set depth to the maximum achievable depth, but no deeper than just below the
reflection from the bottom of the phantom. b. Set the focus at the deepest depth or just above the base of phantom.
c. Make sure Gain is set to 100% for this test. (If setting the gain to 100% over-saturates the image, a lower gain setting can be used).
d. If the beam does not penetrate to the bottom of phantom, display images in dual mode by selectingDual mode. (Button 23) The second image should be obtained in air.
Measure the depth where there are no more usable echoes, or where the electronicnoise is equivalent in both images. Store the dual image.
e. If the beam penetrates to bottom of phantom, a single image can be stored.Reminder: Measure the depth of penetration on the system before the image is stored.
The depth of penetration is less than the depth of the phantom (i.e., a reflection off the
bottom of the phantom is not visible).

(3) Caliper accuracy(Axial and Lateral)a. Set the depth at 5-6 cm
b. Set the focus between the sets of axial and lateral caliper accuracy pins
c. 2D Opt: Resd. Set the gain so that the pins are highly visible
e. Adjust the angle of the transducer on the phantom until the pins are as circular aspossible. (This will be easier with the linear arrays than with the curvilinear arrays).
f. Make 2 measurements: For lateral caliper accuracy, position the cursor above thepins. For vertical caliper accuracy, position the cursor beside the pins (i.e. the cursors
should not obscure the pins).Reminder: Make the caliper measurements on the system before the image is stored.

(4) Resolution (Axial and Lateral)a. Set the depth to ~ 4cm (the depth of the resolution pattern).
b. Focus at the level of the resolution pattern.c. 2D Opt: Res
d. Set the gain to minimize background and visualize pins.e. Adjust the angle of the transducer on the phantom until the pins are as circular as
possible. (This will be easier with the linear arrays than with the curvilinear arrays).f. Freeze the image.
g. Zoom in on the pins. (Button 11)h. Make a measurement of FWHM. Decrease the gain so that the background is not
visible. Areas of reverb beneath the pins shouldnotbe included in the FWHMmeasurement.
i. Freeze the image displaying the FWHM measurements. j. When filling out the QC report, note the minimum distance between pins that is fully
resolvable.Reminders: The FWHM measurement should agree with the resolution limits shown by
the resolution pattern.

(5) Dead zonea. Set the depth at approximately 2.0 cm
b. Focus at the shallowest level.c. 2D Opt: Res
d. Set the gain to visualize pins and the presence or absence of reverb near surface.e. Record the number of pins that are visible.

(6) Anechoic cysta. Reduce the depth to ~5.0 cm
b. Focus at the depth that is just below the largest anechoic object.
c. 2D Opt: Resd. Turn up the gain to look for reverberations inside the cysts. (Storing this image is
optional unless there are reverbs/artifacts to demonstrate)e. Turn the gain down to demonstrate a lack of internal reflections/noise. All three cysts
should be round (non-distorted) with distal enhancement. (Store this image.)

(8) Testing an Additional Transducer
Test remaining transducers within the same exam (if possible).
Connect the next transducer to be tested and select the new transducer. (Button 9) Beforedisconnecting a transducer, be sure to de-activate that transducer.
Repeat the set-up described on p.3 to ensure that all of the proper settings are selected. Modify the image annotation with the serial number of the next transducer. Verify X-Res and
SonoCT are offfor each transducer and that the resolution is set at the highest available.
(9) After all Acceptance Testing is Finished
Review the images (Button 6) to ensure that all of the necessary images were captured. End exam. (Button 8)
Send the images to Stentor. Shut down the machine
Clean the gel from the transducers and the phantom with a soft, clean towel.
(10) Additional Reminders / Some Common Mistakes
Make sure that for the depth of penetration measurements, the focal depth is set appropriately.(It should be set to the maximum focal depth, or, if the bottom of the phantom is visible in the
image, to just above the bottom of the phantom. Record distance measurements (depth of penetration, caliper accuracy, FWHM) on the
ultrasound image. Make sure to make measurements before capturing images, so that thesemeasurements are recorded on the image sent to Stentor.
If you use the zoom option, make sure you zoom the frozen image, NOT the live image. When testing multiple transducers on a single unit, be sure to update the transducer serial
number on the images before testing a new transducer.
Deleting Individual Images To delete individual images, review the images ( Button 6) and select the image number next to
the images you want to delete. The selected images will have image numbers highlighted inorange. Then select the delete selected images option. Warning: This permanently deletes
the selected images from the ultrasound hard drive.
