Meet Brooke Artesi, CP, LPO and CEO ofSunshine Prosthetics + Orthotics. Brookeis a highly trained medical professional whospecializes in the production and applica-tion of artificial body parts, such as leg and

arm prosthesis, for physically challenged adults and children, and is also a NJ Licensed Orthotist, with expertise inAnkle/Foot Bracing, Knee Bracing, Post-operative SportsBracing, Customized Foot Orthotics, Custom Pediatric Or-thotic Devices and Scoliosis Bracing, Cranial Re-molding, and Dynamic Movement Orthoses. In addition to her extensive knowledge in theProsthetic and Orthotics field, Brooke is also aCertified Mastectomy Fitter who specializes inNon-surgical Breast/nipple Reconstruction, utiliz-ing the revolutionary Radiant Impressions product. Each unique and life-like breast prosthesis is artfullysculpted and is a one-of-a-kind, custom creation.Sunshine Prosthetics + Orthotics is the only facilityin the tri-state area certified to perform CustomMastectomy Prosthesis with Radiant Impressions. Brooke is passionate about her work, as she too,is a prosthetic limb wearer. The result of a train ac-cident when she was just 15, Brooke’s leg was am-putated below the knee. A compassionateprofessional who possesses a deeply personal under-

standing of her patient’s needs, Brooke states, “I carefully takeinto consideration my patient’s individual needs in an effortto maximize their potential for function and activity. The endgoal is to help my patients feel whole again, encouraging themto reach their potential to stay active!”

Modern Technologies and Techniques Produce State –of –the –Art Prosthetics With today’s modern advancements in the science of pros-thetic making such as CADCAM (Computer Assisted Designand Technology) and VACUUM Assisted Suspension (a moreadvanced option than older pin suspension technology, toachieve a better fitting socket on lower extremity amputeeprosthetics), Brooke is able to assist the amputee with artificiallimbs that fit and perform better for every patient. Anothercutting-edge device Brooke routinely uses is the Omega Scan-ner. When an amputee comes in to be fitted with a prostheticlimb, Brooke scans the patient’s limb with the Omega’s LEDLight Technology and that information is immediately trans-ferred to her computer’s hard drive. Once the scanning proce-dure is completed, a 3 dimensional digital model of herpatient’s limb appears on the computer screen that allowsBrooke to modify as needed, to create a more precisely func-tional prosthesis. Scanner technology is faster, as the proceduretakes just minutes and is a preferred method, as compared tothe old-fashioned technique of plaster mold-casting. “Patientslove it because scanning is fast, so it saves time, and fewer prac-

titioner fittings are required toachieve superior results. Scanningaffords a quicker turn-around fromscanned model to a completed pros-thetic,” says Brooke.

Cranial Remolding for pediatric patients who are 3-18months of age and who present with skull deformities such asplagiocephaly; an asymmetrical distortion, or flattening of oneside of the skull, is accomplished with the Custom Fitted Cra-nial Remolding Helmet. Brooke utilizes the Omega Scannerto obtain a digital model of the patient’s head and works withSTARband products. Ankle Foot Orthoses are custom fitted and are used to cor-rect musculoskeletal deformities and abnormalities in pediatricgait. Custom Fitted Ankle/Foot Orthotics allows movementwhere the patient has functional control and provides supportwhere the patient has weakness or dysfunction. Brooke utilizesthe Omega Scanner with her pediatric gait patients as well, toquickly obtain a model of the patient’s ankle/foot and workswith Dafo products. Functional Electric Stimulation…Help for Patients with Mus-cular Atrophy Another superior technological advance is FES, the Func-tional Electric Stimulation unit. It stimulates nerves and mus-cles to give patients more natural movement and stability, andis used for patients who are suffering from Drop Foot. The FESHand Unit is widely used for patients who have suffered aStroke, for Multiple Sclerosis Patients, those with CerebralPalsy and Brain or Spinal Cord Injured patients. FES re-edu-cates muscles, thereby reducing muscle loss. It also increasesblood circulation to the localized area, and maintains and im-proves a range of motion. If you or a loved one has trouble walking or using yourhand as a result of Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Brain Injury,Spinal Cord Injury or Cerebral Palsy, BIONESS wireless tech-nologies may help you regain your independence and becomeactive again. Sunshine Prosthetics + Orthotics will help youfind out if a BIONESS System is right for you. FREE Screen-ings are available once each month by appointment only.
