Europe’s Transport Challenges Targets 2020 - 2050
• Road Safety: - 50% by 2020, towards zero fatalities in 2050
• Reducing Congestion: estimated - 2% GDP
• Energy Efficiency & Emissions: - 60 % by 2050
• Addressing growth in demand and increasing urbanisation, aging population
• Integration of different transport modes • Make use of research and developments
including ICT • Reducing dependence on oil and impact
of increasing oil prices • Reducing noise and air pollution in cities
European objec8ves Europe 2020 goals of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Transport ac8vi8es organised around the following broad lines: • Resource efficient transport that respects the environment
• BeCer mobility, less conges+on, more safety and security
• Global leadership for the European transport industry
• Socio-‐economic research and forward looking ac+vi+es for policy making

Meeting the Future Challenges with Horizon 2020
• The Framework Programme for Research and
Innovation 2014 – 2020 (87 B€) • Commission proposal, negotiations and co-decision
with the Council and the European Parliament in 2012 - 2013
• Three mutually reinforcing priorities dedicated to – Excellent Science – Industrial leadership – Societal challenges
• Smart, Green and Integrated Transport is one of the societal challenges
• In the transport domain, H2020 will be one of the main instruments to deliver the goals of the White Paper
What’s new? • A single programme bringing together three separate
programmes/ini0a0ves*
• More innova8on, from research to retail, all forms of innova0on
• Focus on societal challenges facing EU society, e.g. health, clean energy and transport
• Simplified access, for all companies, universi0es, ins0tutes in all EU countries and beyond.
*The 7th research Framework Programme (FP7), innova0on aspects of Compe00veness and Innova0on Framework Programme (CIP), EU contribu0on to the European Ins0tute of Innova0on and Technology (EIT)

Smart Ci+es and Communi+es • European Smart Ci+es and Communi+es EIP – Launched 10 July 2012
• Pool resources to support demonstra+on of energy, transport and ICT in urban areas
• Industry invited to work with ci+es to combine technologies to address ci+es needs (buildings, grid, mobility etc)
• Funding through yearly calls for propsals: €365 million for 2013
• Important part of Horizon 2020 (80 billion euro R&I funding programme 2014-‐20)

Trends for Smart Ci+es…. • Integrated approach – Energy – ICT -‐ Mobility • Towards full connec8vity: New transforma+ve services which build
on future internet technologies, wireless broadband and cloud compu+ng.
• An electromobility revolu8on which is a must due the scarcity of fossil fuels, exploding demand for mobility in the emerging economies, policy goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions
• Different ownership models, mul8-‐modal transport, on-‐demand mobility services,
• Increasing level of automa8on for safety and sustainability, due to increasing complexity of the vehicles and their environment, and the need to approach zero fatali+es scenario in 2050 and to reduce greenhouse gases.
• Tackling changes in demographics and the con+nuing urbanisa+on and aging popula+on
• Data for beCer op+miza+on of mobility services
