Since our premier issue of IT’S ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚA TO ME, CHICAGO, much has transpired both in our own back yard of Chicago as well as in Greece. The visible progress and anticipation that surrounds the fast rising National Hellenic Museum in the heart of Greektown is back-dropped by the enormous economic and social challenges facing Greece. This blend of contraries, something familiar in our collective history, is somehow all taken in stride by us Greeks. We all tend to move forward. The growth of this edition is certainly a testament to that.

When visiting Athens, tourists have an array of shops lled to the brim with souvenirs to choose from and remind them of their stay. One in particular stands out from the rest—the Athens Info-Point. The City of Athens set up a new Athens Info-Point kiosk in Public, a popular retail store located in Syntagma Square (1 Karayiorgi Servias Street). The kiosk has been a huge hit among tourists who are looking for information on the latest happenings in Athens and for unique gifts and mementos to bring back home with them. We had the opportunity to speak with Kalliopi Andriopoulou, Public Relations Director of the Athens Tourism and Economic Development Company, to give us the inside scoop of the latest efforts by the City of Athens to promote tourism in this great city.
Daily Frappe The Athens Info-Point in Syntagma Square is such a fresh approach to how tourists in Athens can get information about city services. Tell us a little bit about the concept and how it came about.
Kalliopi Andriopoulou The Athens Info-Point is based on the Athens’ Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis’ strategy to promote Athens as an urban destination. The success of the rst Athens Info-Point at the El. Venizelos Athens International Airport led to another opportunity to set-up a second Athens Info-Point in the heart of the city, Syntagma Square. This new kiosk provides tourists with information on what to do and see while visiting Athens. Maps of the city and brochures provide information about historic and cultural monuments and sights, entertainment and leisure activities, eating out, nearby day-trip destinations and shopping. Special seasonal material is also available.
So, if you're in Athens and want to check out the Acropolis or want to know where to get the best souvlaki or want to dance all night but don't know where the hottest clubs are, then head over to our Athens Info-Points in the airport or in Syntagma and our specially trained staff will help you nd what you’re looking for.

DF The actual kiosk and new souvenirs have the distinctive "Breathtaking Athens" (breathtakingathens.com) look — with a clear emphasis on design and presentation. Tell us about the creative team that worked on the project.
KA The new tourist products of Athens were designed by a leading Greek designer, Yannis Kouroudis from Κ2 Design. These items promote the city with their innovative style and capture the energy in Athens today. Yannis combined traditional Athenian elements with the city’s more modern look, to create unique items that reect this contemporary and fresh image. Some of the items available at the “Breathtaking Athens” shop in the Athens Info-Points include mugs, t-shirts, magnets, pins and other souvenirs in a variety of designs and colors, to suit all tastes for business gifts and special souvenirs.
DF What has the feedback been like?
KA People truly love and enjoy shopping! Greek and foreign visitors can choose from a wide range of unique mementos to remind them of their special visit to Athens. Our visitors have also noted that our hospitality and impeccable service make them feel welcome in our city.
DF How many visitors stop by Athens Info-Point on any given day?
KA Because of its strategic position, the Athens Info-Point is visited daily by thousands of tourists. Our experienced staff help visitors get information about Athens, discover what the city has to offer, and ultimately help promote cultural awareness. The goal of the Athens Info-Point is to capture the attention of tourists and distribute information about what’s happening in Athens — places to see and fun things to do during their stay. We hope that with this service, our visitors will stay a little longer and experience everything that Athens has to offer — and that's a lot!
DF Are there plans to expand Athens Info Point to other parts of the city? Are we going to see a Thessaloniki Info-Point anytime soon?
KA Athens Tourism and Economic Development Company (www.atedco.gr) is planning to further expand its tourist information network with a Central Tourist Information Center near the Acropolis as well as smaller Athens Info-Points in strategic locations within the city, like the ports, bus stations and major attractions that have a lot of foot trafc. We are also working on the development of a new tourist signage system that aims to provide clear and concise information to further enhance our visitors' experience. Since we represent the City of Athens Ofcial Tourist Board, we can’t comment on behalf of the City of Thessaloniki and its tourism goals, but we are very happy and excited to see similar initiatives taking place in other wonderful destinations in Greece.

DF What's the “must-have” souvenir item this summer?
KA Mugs, t-shirts, magnets, pins and pendants that have the traditional symbols like the owl and the “tsarouhi” — the traditional Greek rustic shoe — are the favorite souvenir items for this summer. Items with Greek letters and words on them are also very popular with tourists. So if you want to buy a few gifts for friends and family back home or a souvenir for yourself, our Breathtaking Athens store located in the Athens Info-Point is the place to be!
DF For many tourists, Athens is just a spring board to the islands. What would you say to those that have never really spent any time in the city?
KA Athens is a historic European city, vibrant and hospitable, offering countless activities for all types of visitors. Its modern tourism identity is characterized by its new infrastructure, excellent transportation network, refreshing green spaces, distinctive museums, as well as, a unied archaeological park that includes the Acropolis Museum — the newest “must see” for museum lovers. The city features 166 hotels, 137 theatres, 64 cinemas, 44 museums, two concert halls, more than 150 bars and 73 clubs. At the same time, there are endless temptations for shopping, dining, leisure, sports and tness. The list of activities is endless with places like the National Gardens, the Attica Zoological Park, the new digital Planetarium, the Natural History Museum, the interactive museum of the Hellenic World Institute, theme parks and exhibition venues — all of which have earned signicant awards in recent years. The geographical location of Athens ideally offers many opportunities for quick trips to nearby islands or mountain trails, as well as easy access to glistening beaches in less than 30 minutes from the city center.
Athens is the city that takes your breath away 24 hours a day, everywhere you look, any time of the year!
