Podiatry is the examination, diagnosis, surgical prevention, treatment and care of the foot and leg. Conditions affecting the lower extremities often require this specialized care, and the dynamic team of doctors and staff at The Foot & Leg Specialty Center are skillfully trained to administer the highest quality of care in every case, and to answer questions and provide literature to educate their patients about their individual conditions. With more than 42 years experience, Dr. Stelnicki demonstrates his expertise through technological advancements in diagnostics and treatments of patients’ feet, knees and legs. His surgical experience includes all aspects of foot and leg care, with an emphasis in care of wounds, diabetic conditions, and circulation.

Linda Kaplan, D.P.M., graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Social Science degree, and she continued her studies at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Kaplan completed her residency at Dearborn Medical Center in Michigan. She joined forces with Dr. Stelnicki twenty years ago to offer patients of The Foot & Leg Medical Center excellence in foot and ankle healthcare. Dr. Kaplan’s emphasis is in wound care and geriatric podiatry treatment and makes homes visits by appointment.

Vycheslav Makarov, DPM, is the newest member of the podiatric team at The Foot & Leg Specialty Center. Formerly, Dr. Makarov was the chief resident at New York Hospital in Queens. His extensive education and surgical training in this extremely challenging and diversified four-year surgical residency program has fully equipped Dr. Makarov to diagnose, treat and manage even the most difficult podiatric conditions.

CARE –NEW NAME AND EXPANDED SERVICE FOR RESIDENTS OF PASCO

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (January 23, 2014) – As part of Gulfside Hospice’s 25th anniversary celebration this year, the board of directors for the organization announces a new name – Gulfside Hospice & Pasco Palliative Care.

The new name highlights care across the spectrum for patients facing both end-of-life and chronic illness. Gulfside Hospice provides care to Pasco County residents facing a terminal illness with six months or less to live. Pasco Palliative Care patients can receive care at any stage of a chronic sickness and can continue seeking curative treatment for their illness. “It’s important for residents to understand that they have a choice in healthcare,” said Linda Ward, Gulfside Hospice & Pasco Palliative Care president and CEO. “Gulfside Hospice is celebrating our 25th anniversary this year, and Pasco Palliative Care was licensed in 2009 to expand the care that Gulfside provides in our community to residents who do not qualify for hospice but still need special care provided by our wonderful team.”

When it’s Time to Have “The Talk”

Sensitive life topics often make conversations difficult for families. Just as you can’t imagine needing a caregiver, your parent can’t imagine needing help with everyday life. When Mike & I were participating in pre-marital pastoral counseling, those were the verses I specifically requested as the liturgy for the ceremony. It clearly defines what love is, and what love is not. Of course, this explanation of love is one of many, it just happens to be my favorite.

Being a newlywed, everything involves or revolves around love! However, I must confess, we are actively practicing the arts of compromise and communication, and thankfully, I raised a puppy named “Patience” for more than ten years! I’m kidding…kind of...

Patience is important in any relationship. Maybe that’s why,

according to the scripture, love requires patience first. Love is not easy. I have neighbors that are not easy to love, but they are my neighbors, and we look out for each other. Therein lies the next meaning of love: kindness.

If you have ever watched The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she always wraps up with the phrase, “Be kind to one another.” I love that. It is important to be kind to each other, be it in your home, at Publix, on the street corner, even when you are having a rotten day. A smile, a kind word, or simple act of kindness, are usually welcomed by the recipient.

In my opinion, there’s really no better way to demonstrate love than by exercising kindness and patience on a regular basis. Try it. Worst case scenario, your stress levels decrease and you experience greater joy in life!

The color purple would like to thank the global color authority Pantone for crowning it the color of the year for 2014.

But it’s a color — Pantone 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, to be precise — so it can’t exactly talk.

This blend of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones does, however, speak in murmurs of exoticism and enigma.

“While the 2013 color of the year, Pantone 17-5641 Emerald,

served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity,

Radiant Orchid reaches across the color

wheel to

intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute in a news release Thursday. “Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”

Pantone’s annual color coronation is one part cultural indicator and one part marketing forecast. The choice is influenced by movies in production, fashion runways, traveling exhibitions, new artists, technology, travel hot spots, sports and other socio-economic conditions. Pantone also minds a vast color library, including a Pantone Universe Paint Collection available at Lowe’s stores, to which it is adding Radiant Orchid. Pantone collaborates

with various manufacturers to create formulas

for use in

their products.

Fashion brands including Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan, Juicy Couture and Yoana Baraschi already are incorporating Radiant Orchid into their spring 2014 collections, Pantone said, adding that the color’s rosy tones can flatter a number of skin tones.

Look for the hue to carry deeper into fashion and beauty items, including nail and lip color, and to infiltrate home furnishings and paint. Radiant orchid is complementary to olive and deeper hunter greens, Pantone said, as well as turquoise, teal and light yellows.

Its vibrance also enlivens neutrals such as gray, beige and taupe, Pantone said, serving to energize without overpowering — a quality we might all

do well to emulate in 2014.

Regal and eccentric, purple lends a layer of mystery to your design

Purple has a moody, enchanting, spiritual and mystical quality.Purple, the color of royalty and creativity, is a combination of calm blue and exciting red. The color can add exotic flair to different rooms in your home.

Purple can be dramatic or quiet, depending on the tone or shade. The

regal color can add richness to a space or drama to an architecturally simple room. Purple colors range from light lavenders to solid plums, and a few strategically placed purple accents may be all you need to create a whole new vibe for your surroundings.

Use deep purple to create a stunning front entry. Light lavender-gray walls can add softness to a formal living room, while purple pastels mixed with modern art can make a teen’s bedroom feel hip and young.

Want to make a statement? Try neon-purple walls with gray stripes for a brave, edgy dining space. Make a room lively by pairing mid-tone purple with mustard yellows. A very light lavender with crisp white trim on cottage-style beadboard walls gives a touch of unexpected color to a room.

If you want something more lush and sophisticated, use eggplant purple for the walls paired with high-gloss white trim. Purples combined with soft blues or greens create a very tranquil color scheme.

Exterior Options

Purple can be used for the exterior of your home. A mid-tone purple with a dose of black can highlight the period details of Victorian architecture. Or try purple shutters, doors and window boxes to add cuteness and highlight

details on a Cape Cod.

Muted mulberry with white trim offers a colorful alternative to more mundane selections. But be aware that deeper purple colors absorb light and will fade and require repainting more frequently than other color selections,

says architectural color consultant Bonnie Krims.

More Ways to Create a Mood With Purple

• A claret color that combines raspberry with black can add richness to a room.

• A dark, rich purple can provide a lovely backdrop to show off fine crystal and antique silver.

• Use purple accessories to brighten up and add depth to a neutral color scheme.

• To make a space feel happy, pair lavender with aqua or chartreuse.

• Warm purples (like African violet) can make a dining room feel cozy.

In a world filled with “selfies” and Instagram, many people consider themselves photographers. I disagree vehemently with them. Simply owning a camera and fiddling with the flash does not give anyone the patience, attentiveness, or skill that professional photographers have. That being said, it is always possible to hone those skills by going out and practicing. I think there is something wonderful about photographing the environment around you. Not just the urban environment, but the natural one. Local photographer Steve Hyatt, sent us some photographs he took at some local parks. The quality and composure of the images is simply refreshing. The subject matter is even more wonderful. It can be easy to forget to go outside and celebrate the wonderful gifts nature has provided for us. When looking at Hyatt’s photos, I can feel the warmth of that afternoon sun and smell the clean air. So I implore potential photographers to stop taking photos of their lunches and their faces and focus on subject matter that has depth and life to it. Take the time to capture the perfect light or to wait for a dragonfly to land on a flower. There will be nothing more satisfying that capturing that perfect photograph. Well, maybe having it printed, framed, and hung in your house. After all, we cannot always go outside to nature, but capturing that moment in time can bring it into your home.

Gray is a subtle color that can bring sophistication to interiors while also the neutrality that home buyer crave.

“It’s the hot new neutral, a sleek and sophisticated color option that adds refinement to almost any room,” says Debbie Zimmer, a paint and color expert with the Paint Quality Institute. “Walls that are painted gray are great backdrops for almost any style of décor, and gray is such a dignified color that it can elevate the appearance of even the most modest furnishings.”

Zimmer says that gray can be a great color choice for embellishments throughout interiors, such as a gray wash on wood furniture or the fabric in seating.

In her 2014 color forecast, she expects grey to be used more in homes. “We will even see grey’s flashier cousin, silver, used as an important accent color,” says Zimmer. Zimmer also predicts “white” to stage a comeback

in 2014, with white and off-white back in vogue.

“As with gray, the ease of coordinating furnishings with a neutral hue like white

is appealing to almost everyone,” she says. “Those who are downsizing will favor white or very light-colored walls to make their new, smaller interiors look more spacious; and for those who may soon put up a ‘For Sale’ sign, white is the wise paint color to apply before listing a home.”

I met Brenda Darnley Martin at a Charity for Chics event in Pasco County. She quickly struck me as a woman who makes her presence known.

She has written several children’s books:“The Treasure-Hunt Three and Judge Mia’s Decree” written for elementary age children emphasizes the inappropriateness of bullying behavior and the importance of getting help in a bullying situation It was dedicated to two Tampa Police officers who were killed in the line of duty the same week the art work was finished.

These books are set in old Tampa Bay:“Freddie, Hector and Tish: The Treasure-Hunt Fish” (2008)“The Treasure-Hunt Fish and Miss Bernadette’s Wish” (2009).

Although her love of community is apparent, she happily shared, “I truly believe that our community is special! Even though it continues to grow, it still has a “small town” feel to me. Our community rallies together if there are people in need – we see that frequently at the many events and fundraisers held throughout the year. We live in a very giving community, and that’s what I really love about it!”

His father taught him many lessons in life, but when Dan Sullivan got the opportunity to work side-by-side with his Dad before he passed away, one lesson stood out. His father told him “Some people give of their money, some give of their time, but as a small business owner it is hard to give either of those, so those people should give of their talents.”

That’s what Dan believes he has done. He has generously given of his talent for event-planning and marketing to help many organizations over the course of 25 years. Some of these organizations include The Angelus House, Center for Independence, Cotee River Bike Fest, Chasco Fiesta, Holiday Street Parade, Rooters Club, American Cancer Society, Pasco Music Festival, Metropolitan Ministries Pasco, and Alzheimer’s Tampa.

Currently, Dan serves as Executive Director of the newly established Trinity-Odessa Chamber of Commerce. His passion for serving and supporting local businesses and organizations, coupled with the growth and revived commercial and residential interests in the Trinity & Odessa communities, prompted him to take this support to a higher level with the incorporation of a Chamber of Commerce as a voice for the area, complete with progress updates and community events!

“Residents and businesses that live and work in the Trinity-Odessa area are very proud of their community and it shows. The support for our schools and nonprofits is unmatched in other communities I have visited. I have already experienced collaboration from many organizations that want to partner with the Chamber of Commerce to improve the economy and quality of life for local businesses and residents,” Dan clarified.

As parents, Dan and his wife, Jan, are also teaching some lessons. They are instilling a sense of community pride in their two boys, who are now old enough to learn what means to give back and pay it forward!

Why would anyone shop anywhere else and send their dollars to another economy when we truly have every service, store, vendor and provider right here in Trinity?”

This has proven to be an enormous success, lifting spirits and boosting bottom-line profits for struggling business owners.

Debbie explains, “Local businesses are the heartbeat of America. They employ the majority of our community and are the ones that support our local economy and give back to those in need. If we find a small business that needs a little boost, we all ban together to help keep them in business. This is what feeds their family and pumps dollars back into our community. I have a passion for marketing our small businesses and doing all I can to see them succeed.”

Debbie’s love of family and community is demonstrated through IT’s YOUR HOME Magazine, the Cash Mobs, her job as Realtor for Remax Realty, Inc., Trinity, and her active involvement in Trinity Business Association, West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Pasco, Trinity - Odessa Chamber of Commerce, Inspiration Foundation, and West Pasco Board of Realtors.

Crescent Oaks Country Club is a larger, more modern, Mediterranean style clubhouse with an impressive 2-story entry foyer, an elegant banquet room, beautiful covered porch, and a new covered outdoor event pavilion. Guests pull up to the circular drive, view the lush landscaping, and enter the foyer with its chandeliers, fireplace, and cocktail reception setting. A mahogany “hideaway” bar with hi-top tables and padded booths is adjacent, a perfect spot to grab a drink with a guest. The long banquet room has full-length windows that give every guest a view of the golf course and spectacular night-lit landscaping. Nelson Blasco, Food and Beverage Director, choreographs exquisite meals and celebrations with Chef Derrick Roese. The facilities are beautiful, the food is great, and the staff will really make your guests happy and catered to.

Wentworth and Crescent Oaks are family owned and operated by Ace Golf. The clubs are open to the public and offer golf, social and seasonal memberships. Everyone is invited to stop in and play golf, enjoy a meal or bring a client in to enjoy their restaurants. Mulligan’s Irish Pub at Wentworth is an upscale, authentic Irish Pub open 7 days a week from 9am to 10pm (til 9pm Sun-Thurs). The PACE Center for Girls offers girls ages 11-17 who are struggling at home, at school or in the community a safe, supportive environment where they can focus on their academics and personal goals. Some girls have problems at school, others have family instability and conflict, and still others have been victims of abuse or neglect. All our girls come to us for different reasons, but they all had the same need- PACE.

The PACE Center works closely with the Pasco County School System to provide a strong academic pro g r am w i t h s m a l l c l a s s s i z e s ,

individual a c a d e m i c goals, and weekly academic advising. It also offers strong social services support that includes individual counseling goals and sessions, mandatory monthly parent meetings, and referrals to community resources. Working together, our academic and counseling staff gives our girls the opportunity to make positive, lasting changes. To offer even more support the girls who leave PACE to return to their zoned school, enter the workforce, or go on to college have a dedicated counselor who continues to offer services and assistance for a minimum of three years.

The PACE Center for Girls is a 501(c)3 nonprofit serving all of Pasco County. The program is free and voluntary and it works! Last year we had 116 girls in our Day program and were following 194 in our Transition Program. Ninety eight percent of our Day girls improved academically and 95% of the girls who transitioned from our program went back to school or were employed.

The Inspire Foundation is teaming up with Florin Roebig to host Arts

for Autism on March 1, 2014This fundraiser will be held at the Florin Roebig property at 777 Alderman Rd in Palm Harbor from 6 pm - 10 pm. The Inspire Foundation is a non profit organization that raises money for music and art programs for children with special needs in the Tampa Bay area. Bands Hope Darling and 10th Concession, along with guitar virtuoso, Shawn Hopper will grace the stage, and DJ Kid Kodi will help fill the night with music. WWE star, Chris Jericho will be at this event signing autographs. The concerts and most of the art vendors will be outdoors under the stars. There will be two fashion shows featuring local designers, Jessica Reid (All Brides 2 Be) and Rachel Mazzuco (Haden Reid). Between all of the art displays, auctions, fashion shows and live music, this is going to be a great night out for all adults...and helps support such a great cause! Tickets are $25.00 general admission, and $40 VIP (which includes backstage pass for autographs and photos with bands and celebrity guests). Music Matters in the

Heart of TrinityBarbara & Kevin Abendroth, owners of Music Matters in Trinity, have always taken great pleasure in music and instruments. “We have been in the music business since we were teenagers. We understand the benefits of having music in our lives, and we take great satisfaction getting kids and adults involved in playing music. We hope it will make a difference in their lives, too,” Kevin explains.

There qualified instructors teach students of all ages how to play instruments, read music and grow in their talent! Music Matters has a 15-station computer lab for interactive participation by the students to supplement the teacher’s lessons. They also utilize 17 studios with glass doors where parents can observe their child’s lesson with qualified professional. There is also a comfortable waiting area, complete with a coffee bar, plasma televisions, luxury chairs and WiFi.

Jack’s Mom can now bathe him in a bathtub, not with a hose in the backyard. Angelica can now go to the mall with her friends, now that the lift for her wheelchair has been repaired. Wayne’s Grandmother can safely transport him into and out of the house, thanks to the 30-ft ramp that was constructed.

These success stories and so many more are the driving force of Madeline Robinson and her nonprofit organization, Wheelchairs 4 Kids. Madeline recognized the dire needs of disabled children and teens she was helping through other organizations in West Tampa Bay.

“I saw so many children in wheelchairs that were too small for them and patched up with duct tape,” she said. “I wondered why no one was doing anything to help them.” So she did. With the support of her husband, Lonnie, Madeline set up an office in their home, and Wheelchairs 4 Kids was born!

The goal & mission of Wheelchairs 4 Kids is “to give every child with mobility challenges the best opportunity to live life to its fullest.” Thanks to generous donations and manufacturers discounts obtained by the organization, their goal is being met and exceeded! Children & teens are provided the assistance they need, be it a motorized wheelchair for navigating school

campuses, residential and vehicular modifications for safer transitioning, or therapeutic equipment for strengthening and rehabilitation.

In 2012, Wheelchairs 4 Kids was instrumental in changing the lives of 30 young people.”My lofty goal is to help every child with a disability,” said Madeline, “but realistically, I would like to help 50 children a year.” She and her organization are well on their way!
