Seeking God Over Summer

It’s that time of year!

The end of the school year!

Graduations, and anticipating that next step!

Winter is over! Spring is attempting to bloom!

Then summer with vacations, sports, summer school, beaches, road trips,

festivals, gardens to tend, BBQ’s and picnics to enjoy and all the excitement that comes after a year of hard work!

WE DESERVE IT! RIGHT!

We are everywhere. Families are separated by activities. Usually we forget someone important in all the excitement — GOD!

While that is understandable from a scheduling stand point, DOES GOD TAKE A SUMMER BREAK? We know that answer, NO, he does not. God’s love and help are available 24/7, 365 days a year!

We should seek him in different ways so as to not forget Him.

In the sun, the flowers, the laughter, the sights and sounds of summer! At the beach, in our car, riding our bikes, running.

He created everything and He is there with us. We need to think about that no matter where we go or what we do.

Here are a few suggestions that you can do in less than 5 minutes or longer if you desire. Do with your kids, spouse or friends.

~ SHARE your High’s and Low’s for the day. What was exciting or not so

exciting about what you did that day?

~ PRAY for each other’s High’s and Low’s. Thank God for the High’s and

ask for help with the Low’s.

~ BLESS each other. This could be a poem, song, dance or just saying I love

you and God love’s you.

Can we spare 5 minutes a day to share life, love and blessings with God?

5 minutes?

Wouldn’t it be great when we are off in all directions this summer to

know that someone cares about what’s going on in your life, loves you?

Be thankful as you enjoy the greatness of summer and God!

“It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;

you made both summer and winter.”

Psalm 74:17

Upcoming Events

The Women of Grace,

"We Are All Daughters" Tea will be held on

Saturday, May 18th from 1:00 p.m.—3:30 p.m. Our theme

is "weddings." Cook Library will present a program on the wed-ding dresses at Cook House and the women who wore them. Now might be a good time to get more use out of that maid of honor dress sitting in your closet, or that flower girl dress your daughter loves.

We are asking you to bring pic-tures of wedding couples to dis-play around Fellowship Hall and, if desired, you may bring a wed-ding dress that will be displayed in the narthex. We will have an exchange of 5x7 picture frames - just bring one wrapped and take one home. Sign up will be on the church bulletin board. Bring your mom, grandma, aunt, BFF, cousin, daughters - all girls are welcome to join in the fun!

A Free Will Donation will be taken. If you can help bake for this event, please contact Jena Mertz 847/233-3953.

BookMarks will be reading Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter

by Franklin for our May 8th meeting. On June 12th we will have our annual Salad Supper and pick our books for the next year. All are invited.

We want to be a Military Friendly Church

and would like your help! We need to know who our veterans are. If you or a member of your family are currently serving, away on active duty in the mili-tary, or have served in the past let us know. Go to our website and download our Military Service Information Form. Fill it in and be sure to include all your important information. Upon comple-tion, return your form to the church office. Les Zematis and Cal Callison will head this ministry at Grace. Keep in touch and watch for more exciting information about this ministry.

Used Book & Bake Sale will be held July 12th

& 13th! We will begin collecting items on Sunday, June

23rd. Start saving your books, CD’s, DVD’s, and paper items.

More details to follow.

Worship for Shut-ins" If you can't make it to

church, tune into "Worship for Shut-ins" at 11:30 a.m. each Sunday. It is shown locally on Channel #138 (TLN) Comcast. They share a brief message and feature choirs that sing favorite hymns. Grace helps support this Lu-theran ministry.

Habitat for Humanity The churches in Lake

County, including Grace Lutheran, are part of Habitat's "Building on Faith" program. Our Grace Lutheran Habitat for Humanity Saturday work days for 2013 are May 18th, Aug. 17th, Sept. 21st and Oct. 26th.

Habitat for Humanity Lake County activities for

2013 include the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative. There are 1500 vacant properties in Waukegan, 750 in Zion and 250 in North Chicago due to foreclosures. The cities and banks are donating some of these properties to Habitat, where the houses will be deconstructed and a new house built or the house will be rehabbed. Habitat has 14 of these homes in inventory. The Habitat for Hu-manity’s motto is “A hand up, not a hand out”. It’s great to make a difference in someone else’s life. Check out www.habitatlc.org/ for more information.

Habitat ReStore facility accepts gently used home furnishings and new and used building materials and sells the items to gener-ate funds to help build houses. The ReStore kept these items out of the landfill. The sa les generated $600,000 in 2012. Consider donating items to the Habi-tat's ReStore facility.

LAKE COUNTY HAVEN – In honor of Mother’s

Day, a collection of paper goods will be collected during the month of May for the Lake County Haven. Items needed are: paper towels, toilet paper, kleenex, and post-age stamps. A collection box will be located at the Social Ministry area in Café Grace beginning May 1st.

PADS Sleep Out for Shelter will take place at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, May 11 through 8:00 a.m., Sunday May 12th, at Carmel High School.

The event is hosted by PADS Lake County and McHenry County. As a participant, you will pledge and fundraise to spend one night sleeping outside-whether in cardboard boxes, cars, tents, or anywhere—in order to begin to under-stand what homelessness feel like. Kick-off will be a one-hour welcome rally. Then throughout the night, there will be programming to focus on learning about or helping the homeless in Lake County. Go to PADS website for more in fo rmat ion : www.s leepout lakecounty .org/EventDetails.

C.O.O.L. Family Housing and

Grace Members in Direct Sales that would be interested in participating in the Boutique. Contact Kelly Held at 847/641-9611 or [email protected] by July 1st for information and details.

Lighting Upgrade for Grace Grace is participating in ComEd’s Smart Ideas for Your Busi-ness program, a program that provides incentives for small businesses and churches to upgrade to more energy-efficient lighting. All of the old fluorescent lighting at Grace was a type designated as T12. The Department of Energy has mandated that T12 bulbs and ballasts be phased out, with the intent that they no longer be available after 2014. As part of the upgrade, we replaced the old T12 units with more efficient T8 fluorescent lighting. In addition, we have replaced other lights around the church with LEDs (including all our EXIT signs), made certain that all thermostats are programmable, and replaced light switches in bathrooms with motion sensors. Overall, it is calculated that the changes we have made will result in a total wattage reduc-tion of almost 20 kilowatts, and this upgrade should pay for itself in energy savings within two years. Grace also re-ceived a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation which covered most of the cost of this lighting upgrade.

Grace Youth News

A Word from the Terrific Twos . . . Terrific Twos has been having fun with Spring activities. We made bird feeders, glued feathers on a bird, worked on a surprise Mother's Day present, and made a cute handprint flower picture for our year end books. We added a "Dino Day" this year, which included painting a neon colored dinosaur and doing the "dino stomp." It was a fun day! In-between all the raindrops, we were excited to be outside playing again! It is hard to believe that the end of the year is only a month away. In May, we will be talking about the rainbow of colors, summer and bugs, and playing in our classroom sand-box. We will see how good the kid’s aim is with a frog toss. Again, we will be ending our year by meeting at a park to play.

Terrific Twos still have openings in some of our classes for 2013/14. Registration forms are available at the Preschool Bul-letin Board or on Grace's website. Please contact me with any questions you may have. Tell your friends about our great program!

Have a fun, relaxing summer! Beth Zupkus, Terrific Twos Director

A Word from Tremendous Threes, Fabulous Fours, & Animal Adventures . . . The school year ends

Memorial Day weekend. Each year goes by faster. This year we had the highest registration ever in Tremendous Threes/Fabulous Fours. We had 73 out of 75 spots filled. We are ecstatic to say all 75 spots are filled so far for the 2013-2014 school year. We thank the Grace Staff and Congregation for your continued support in this vital ministry of the church.

The Tremendous Threes will finish off the school year with units on Bugs and Butterflies. It will be exciting to take our last field trip - a ride on the METRA train to Northbrook and back. We will walk to the park and have lots of fun. Mom & Me Day will be extra special too (or Grandma/Aunts etc.). We invited them to class for a Mother’s Day celebration. Our year will culminate with the release of Painted Lady butterflies on the last day of school. We will watch them change from larvae to butterflies in our classroom - an amazing transformation.

The Fabulous Fours will conclude the school year with a Garden/Planting unit. We thank God for all of the plants, flowers, and trees that grow. We are excited to plant flowers around the Grace property & to plant sunflowers, pumpkins, and other vegetables in the Grace garden with Bob Carter from Grace. It is exciting to return in September to see the growth. Our last field trip is to the Prairie Crossing Learning Farm and Garden. We will hold our graduation from Grace ceremony on the last day of school - bittersweet.

The Animal Adventures Class is surviving the heat in the blazing desert. We are exploring the animals, plants, and land of the desert. We made cactus in a painted pot, sand art, meerkat scenes, handprint camels, and more.

Wishing you a sunny, safe, and happy summer! We will look for you as the Preschool will ride in the Grace float during Libertyville Days in June. Happy 50th to Grace! Also, we will have a booth at the Libertyville Farmers Market three times this summer.
